It takes me a long time to connect to the 10 of Pentacles when I draw it. Its traditional meaning of inheritance and legacy doesn’t mean very much to me. But something I’m trying to do with tarot is to approach my interpretations more creatively, to draw something from nothing, to think outside the box and connect dots that may not at first seem relevant. Sometimes this goes somewhere and leads to insight, sometimes it doesn’t. Or sometimes it’s something kind of in-between.
For example, looking at this card with the sand dollars at first just makes me think of Animal Crossing, which I have been obsessively playing lately. In the game you can walk along the beach of your island, collecting shells in your pockets. In turn I thought of my own hometown by the sea, how I collected shells in my pockets as well, how I still do so every chance I get, whenever I visit the beach.
And this made me think of how sometimes the roots that the 10 of Pentacles speaks of aren’t tied in to your connections with blood relatives, to long-standing traditions or family practices. Sometimes it’s just a place. Or an activity. An ocean shore. Picking up seashells from wet, glittering sand. Sometimes it’s a solitary feeling. Lonely also. But still valid. Building a legacy doesn’t need to mean the house, the kids, the 401k. Sometimes it’s as simple as how many shells you can find, and how joy-full you are when you find them, and how lovingly you can create a home for them in your hands.
