Today's number is 1089
Pick any 3-digit number a where the first and last digits are different.
Reverse the number to get b
Subtract the smaller from the larger (a - b or b - a) to get a new number c
Reverse that result to get a new number d
Add them (c + d)
If you follow this process, you'll always get 1089.
For example, let's choose the number 532. Reversing this number gives 235. Subtracting the smaller from the larger, we get 532 - 235 = 297.
Then reversing that result give 792. Adding 792 to 297 gives 1089.
Why does this work?
Let your number be:
100a + 10b + c
with a > c.
Reversing the digits gives
100c + 10b + a
Subtracting the two gives
(100a + 10b + c) - (100c + 10b + a) = 99a - 99c = 99(a-c)
This means that the result of this subtraction is always a multiple of 99.
What's interesting is that multiple of 99 between 100 and 999 have a special digit structure. When you reverse them and add, they collapse to 1089.
To see why, note that 99k = 100k - k
This subtraction forces a very specific digit pattern. For example:
99 * 3 = 300 - 3 = 297
99 * 7 = 700 - 7 = 693
In general, every such number looks like:
(hundreds digit) = k-1, middle digit = 9 (after borrowing), (ones digit) = 10 - k
The number thus has the form:
(k-1) 9 (10-k)
Reversing it gives:
(10-k) 9 (k-1)
Adding them gives
9 in the ones digit
Tens digit is 9 + 9 = 18 (so leave the 8, carry the 1)
Hundreds is (k - 1) + (10 - k) + 1 (from carry) = 10
So the result is 1089.
