Earlier, my boss was commending a colleague of mine for working, despite being on maternity leave. It was framed as a virtue. Look at this person, she’s so dedicated to her work, she worked despite being on leave. The subtext, of course, is that you should be more like this person. You should be more like her.

It reminded me of the Citations Needed episode about Perseverance Porn. Inspirational stories about people who walk for many miles back and forth evert day to get to work, and those that return to work quickly after a major accident. It’s the same subtext: Be more like these people. 

The question most people aren’t asking -- at least the people reporting these stories -- is why we live in a society where that happens in the first place. Why do we live in a society where a man has to walk 20 miles every day to get to work? Why can’t we see how fucked up it is that a teenager who got into an accident had to go back to work before he was completely recovered? And we should certainly question the merits of working while on maternity leave, especially if the woman being praised for doing so that said, explicitly -- “I did it, but I wouldn’t recommend it”.

The most recent Citations Needed episode (at the time of this writing) is a sister-episode to perseverance porn. This one is about personal finance, poor-shaming, and all those millennials who pulled themselves by their bootstraps and retired in their 30s.
