I have a lot of conflicting thoughts on how Valjean’s policy of the women of his factory having good morals is supposed to be taken. Since I choose to believe Hugo is critiquing it I will say I love how Valjean’s character arc at this point in time parallels M Myriel’s.
Similar idea of individual goodness and how that doesn’t hold up against systematic issues. And how something that seems good and ought to be good can end up doing harm anyways. And how punishment/deprivation for some perceived fault can truly hurt people. Valjean assumes only women with bad morals end up like Fantine, and that assumption proves literally fatal later on.

Madeleine raises enough money through his invention to build a factory and offer a job to any honest man or woman who wants one.
People mistake Madeleine’s generosity for ambition, which resulted in the deputy trying to outdo him.
A rumor starts to circulate that Madeleine is going to be named mayor. Madeleine refuses. He is offered a chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and he refuses that, too.
“When they saw him making money, they said, “He is a man of business.” When they saw him scattering his money about, they said, “He is an ambitious man.” When he was seen to decline honors, they said, “He is an adventurer.” When they saw him repulse society, they said, “He is a brute.””
He is again appointed mayor, and he tries to refuse again, but the people insist that he would be able to do more good a mayor, so he accepts.

I'm sorry this is so so funny. Girl's one upping this deputy completely on accident.

I’m still making these all by hand so don’t be shocked if they are revised later on, like the color polygene Punnett Squares. Shocker occasionally I don’t like a decision I made early on!

Author Note: So like the bf gene the genetic ‘switch’ is a piece of genetic code attached to the base color gene (for here that’s Pterobilin (Blue)). That trigger says, ‘If I am producing anything other than the proteins that make Pterobilins (Blue) then I am sending out proteins to cause the same thing to happen to the other pigments!’. And for this gene it’s actually a change in the amount of those proteins, not proteins that cause a diffent pigment type to be made. I’ll explain this a bit more next page as well with the dragon base examples!
Author Note: Yet again I love the darkest colored variant, although the lightest color variant is pretty too!
A cave dwelling Icewing sub-tribe would be so cool with these darker colors!
