1.0 Character Spotlight - Nael Van Darnus (Or: How a chirurgeon nearly destroyed the world)
Nael Van Darnus was the final boss of 1.0, and a source of confusion among players for years. By this, alone, the character is a point of interest and deserves to have a detailed spotlight to explain a few things. I can only hope that in doing so, I’m doing justice to the character. The actual nature of the character beneath the armor was a point of contention among players for a long time. Was Nael male? Was Nael female? Was Nael in Coil a construct re-created from Nael's memories, including the memories of the warrior maiden Bradamante? The model for Nael's armor is intended for a male body. Compare this to Livia, whose armor is less broad and more close-fitting. The character's emotes were those of a male Elezen. This is because, in 1.0, they had little or no actual models to show what Garleans looked like, aside from short, little Hyur-like Cid. Even in 2.0, we still see Nero using male Elezen emotes as recently as patch 3.56.
But now, let’s look at the above profile, taken from the original FFXIV website for 1.0 and compare it to the profile text taken straight out of the lore book, page 184:
NAEL VAN DARNUS (EULA DARNUS)
The eldest daughter of House Darnus, Eula was heir to the secrets of her family -- secrets of the fallen Allagan Empire. She dreamt of becoming a chirurgeon, as befitted a Garlean lady of her breeding, and following her beloved elder brother Nael into the army. This dream died when he returned home, mortally wounded on what Nael claimed to be an ill-conceived mission ordered by their father. Her mighty efforts were not enough to save him. Mad with grief, she assassinated her sire, making it appear as though he perished of some disease. She became legatus in his stead, all while posing as her brother. The first thing "Nael" did was to execute her father's officers and guard, whereupon her transformation was complete.
Thereafter, "Nael" was merciless, securing victory no matter the cost in blood. Her enemies came to hear of her as the White Raven -- thus garnering much more fame for her fallen brother. Indeed, the Meteor project -- designed to lay waste to Eorzea -- also appears to have been inspired by some twisted loyalty to the son of House Darnus. However, all of her machinations eventually came to an end, and she was struck down at the age of 38.
Today’s 1.0 lookback - Rock me, armored Deus:
-Van Darnus is hobbled after the first leg of the fight. Rather than taking the opportunity to finish him off, the adventurer and accompanying party pause to let him complain about being ‘bested by mere beasts’, and that the worst of them hails from his own land, meaning Cid.
-Rather than conquest, as Gaius and the Emperor would have it, Van Darnus maintains his claim that purifying the realm is the only way to go. He gives himself over wholly to Dalamud.
-As the area fills with red light from the false moon, Nael floats upward, out of sight for but a moment. The adventurer finds him still floating before Dalamud, surrounded with crystaline projections which fan out like wings on either side of him.
-The original Nael Deus Darnus drifts down to the platform, and battle resumes.
Uploaded by Tyramut on Photobucket. Speaking of path companions! Here’s a great compilation of dialogue from one of the Path Companions you could choose from. Each one had a different personality type, which you saw with Bigjerk from my set. The set above comes from a Miqo’te gladiator Path Companion.
I am not the one who discovered and uploaded this video, so I can take no credit. Interesting tidbits about this: Titan was ready to be released for 1.0, and this cutscene was already in the files. However, about the time that it was ready to be added to 1.0, the massive quake struck Japan in 2011. Square Enix evidently felt it wouldn’t be prudent to add due to the timing and, therefore, Titan never was officially added to 1.0. Note that there is a beeping sound overlaid at the beginning of the video. That just seems to be how their recording came out.

Welcome to the XIV Legacy Archive
If you have an interest in exploring details of Final Fantasy XIV 1.0, please follow! This blog is dedicated to giving you a glimpse into the past, both great and not so great, looking at details of lore, media from 1.0 and more. We’re just getting started, and we’ll begin by re-posting the series of daily lookback screenshots from the 1.0 MSQ which I did last spring. These will eventually be removed from my original blog, @winterdeepelegy, as that was intended to be a character blog more than anything else. xivlegacy will be the repository for all things 1.0. Thank you for your interest!
Today’s 1.0 lookback - yes, I needed a less clunky name for these:
-The adventurer is sent to Hyrstmill to address a disturbance there, only to find Garuda has engulfed the entire hamlet with her churning winds. She hovers and rants, blaming the puny mortals for the misuse of “her” crystals to summon another. This is the second time a Primal has expressed concern with something else being summoned.
-Some of this dialogue should seem familiar. Some of these lines got re-used both in the 1.0 and ARR fights.
-Eventually, the Primal disappears, but a single wind-aspected feather is left behind to be caught by the adventurer. One of the fallen soldiers/adventurers pleads for them to save Gridania and the seedseers, and to stop Garuda.
-Next stop: Coerthas, where the red aether node leading to Garuda waits in a cave near Natalan. -Hyrstmill was one of the hamlet areas used in the Hamlet Defense instances. I will post separately about these instances another time.
Today’s cutscene cap harvest:
-At this point in the story, things may have shifted enough that a lot of explanation happened outside of cutscenes. Thus we move on from Cid and the spy to meeting Louisoix at Apkallu Falls in Gridania.
-The adventurer was assigned to retrieve an Inferno Flambeau and bring it to him. This object would give the adventurer access to Ifrit without the unwanted Amalj’aa escort party. Many others have tried to face Ifrit and failed.
-After Ifrit’s defeat, the adventurer prepares to leave back through the Aether Node they came from, but not before being met by one very important witness and his posse.
-Primals had red aether nodes rather than their own aetherytes, and the red ones made a terrible high pitched keening sound. I had to turn my volume way down when I was near them.
-Aside from the Inferno Flambeau you could also collect Inferno Tapers and trade in a certain number of those to get a Flameau. Repeating Primal fights meant farming items such as the tapers, Vortex Headdresses, and keystones - the latter to challenge Garuda and Good King Moggle Mog. The standard fights were way more challenging than the Ex versions in ARR in my opinion. And…. I still have a few dozen of each of these items on my retainers even now.
