Song of the Day
Oh my..... I forgot to post yesterday. But, in my defense, it was my daughter’s birthday :) Ok. so let’s get on with yesterday’s song. According to academia.edu, Napoleon was a huuuuuge fan of the arts. I remember when I took art/humanities, artists like Jacques-Louis David, were specifically asked to paint his majestic portraits. Similarly, he loved music && considered himself an aficionado. He attended many operas and performances. He’s quoted as writing to a lover: “ Music is the soul of love, the sweetness of life, the consolation for sorrow and the companion of innocence” (Correspondance générale).
Below is the song he commissioned for his coronation. Here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia, providing some background:
Napoleon wanted to establish legitimacy of his imperial reign, with its new royal family and new nobility. Therefore, he designed a new coronation ceremony that was unlike the ceremony used for the kings of France.
-------
At Napoleon's enthronement, the Pope said, "May God confirm you on this throne and may Christ give you to rule with him in his eternal kingdom". Limited in his actions, Pius VII proclaimed further the Latin formula Vivat imperator in aeternum! ("May the Emperor live forever!"), which was echoed by the full choirs in a Vivat, followed by "Te Deum".
Enjoy <3
