watching 07x04 made me think of the 02x19 discourse because dean gets close to saying in that episode that he's not sure if they should stop the ghost because of what the people who are being killed have done ('when did our black-and-white case turn to mud? i'm just saying I'm having a hard time not rooting for the ghosts on this one.') while sam is the one pushing dean to keep working on the case & saying 'it's not on us to judge.' and reminding him that they're not much different than the other victims ('we've shot people, dean – more than two.') continually interesting to see which scenes & ideas the fandom latches onto and which are ignored in favor of holding onto those

#especially because the 02x19 singular line is barely an implication and the 07x04 scene has sam literally asking dean 'so what #you're saying – what? you don't want to work the job anymore?' and then dean leaving to go to the bar #and i'm not saying that dean truly believes they deserve to die but i am saying that i just think it's very clear people are selective #in terms of scenes and characterization they will to pay attention to #07x04 #/#star notes

OUTLANDER: ON CHANGING THE PAST, PART 2: Predestination or variations on a time loop?

In episode 704, Roger wrestles with the Presbyterian notion of predestination, after realizing that he and Bree had indirectly prevented Jamie and Claire's death by fire.

Roger explains to Bree that because they apparently changed Jamie and Claire's fate, he has begun to doubt that God is in "control" of what happens to humans. This in turn makes him wonder if he can become a Presbyterian minister.

I know that one popular belief in this fandom about the Outlander universe is that time is a "loop" that Claire and Jamie repeat over and over again. But then how does one account for the small changes to the past that occur in that loop?

Variations on a theme?

Perhaps in the Outlander universe, God is like a musician or artist, Who is unsatisfied with how some of His creations turned out, and so He allows certain people to go back in time to make corrections.

In that case, time in the Outlander universe could be a creative "loop" with "variations on a theme," in which God inspires certain humans to make different changes to the past in an attempt to create better outcomes.
