“How’s the family?” I asked, when he finally picked up the phone.

“My wife gave birth to a baby girl four days ago,” he replied. “But we’re doing good. How are you? How was your eid?”

“It wasn’t much of an eid,” I said. “I am in Lisbon and it’s a different kind of festive. But it’s nice.”

Calling my friends back home to wish them Eid Mubarak got me feeling a bit like Kanye West from Welcome to Heartbreak:

My friend showed me pictures of his kids And all I could show him was pictures of my cribs He said his daughter got a brand new report card (card) And all I got was a brand new sports car

Well, a poor man’s Kanye.

I had a similar feeling when I was back earlier this year for the wedding. And also the same this time around last year at Eid:
