hii... so i have been reading your theories for a long time now and i love them so much. In the netflix adaptation of the books, in the wide window (idk which part) the taxi driver's name is Ishmael... Everyone says that it is a referance to another book (Mobydick, i guess) but when I first saw it I definetely thought of The End... I mean wasn't there a character named Ishmael... It seems more likely to me that it could be a referance to the end... I just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thankss...
A lot of characters, subplots and backstories have been extensively modified in the adaptation. Do the writers plan on making this taxi driver the very same Ishmael we meet in “The End”? It’s impossible to predict at this point.
I’d argue it’s probably just another reference to “Moby Dick” however. The driver is a massive self-proclaimed Herman Melville fan in the adaptation. He spouts theories and analyses incessantly. So it’s perfectly in-character for him to quote the first line of the book rather than literally have “Ishmael” for a name. God, don’t you hate these good-for-nothing bookworms? I’d bet that loser has a blog or something.
From the books’ logic, this character couldn’t be Ishmael. The guy has lived on the Island as a permanent residence for at least fifteen years when the Baudelaire orphans meet him.
