week ii : my first time in a visual arts class...eek
Today we went through a powerpoint of influencual female artists both local and abroad. The 2 artists that caught my eye were Jacqueline Fahey and Jenny Holzer. Francis showed us a picture of Jacqueline Fahey “The Birthday Party”. Francis liked this picture because she herself has been in that situation of having to clean up after her baby’s birthday party. I have to be honest...when I first looked at this painting I thought a child had painted it because the lines were all crooked. Fahey captured that ‘hoha’-‘over it’ feel so well that I found myself emphasising with the poor mother depicted in the picture. I love this because it’s all about telling that story. I judged this piece on face value and was rudely awaken by its power. I am now in love with Holzer after looking her up on google. I love the way how she honours language and the importance of communication. Her poetic words really make me think about my life and the world that I live in.
