"What, yāwantĀ meĀ to sing? Youāve got to be kidding.ā
The girl was staring up at him with imploring eyes; it didnāt make much sense to him, really, why she was wanting to hear him - he knew she was all about singing and whatnot, but to askĀ him to sing? Well, he hoped she wasnāt looking for a whole lot out of him.
Ever since theyād found this android, abandoned, sheād been lighting up the halls with her voice - heād admit heād found himself tuning in, occasionally, whenever she was near medbay; heād just never known her to ask anyone else to sing. Still, it wasnāt like he had any real reason to turn her down, other than the fact that it was a little embarrassing. Shifting uncertainly from foot to foot, he encouraged her to lay down on the nearby biobed; sheād need to recharge soon, which was what had led to this - sheād expressed an odd sort ofā¦fear at the thought of āgoing to sleepāĀ alone, much as a child might. Despite her appearance, he got the feeling she really wasnāt all that old - she did a lot of small things, like this, that just screamedĀ child to him, and maybe that was why, when she asked, despite his initial hesitance, heād already started trying to think of things to sing.
"Alright, you justā¦relax and gimme a minute to think."
Heād never had to do this before - the one chance he might have had had been robbed of him on a stormy night back in Georgia, and heād never thought heād be in the position to be singing to anyone else - but he opted for a lullaby, since the goal here was to get the girl toĀ sleep. So, after a few hesitant moments, he finally settled on one, and sat down in the chair next to the biobed heād positioned the girl in, and after another moment of fidgeting, he started up quietly, the drawl of his accent drawing the words out slightly, his voice a little deeper, the lyrics rolling off his tongue smoothly.
"Hush little baby, donāt say a word - Papaās gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird donāt sing, Papaās gonna buy you a diamond ringā¦"
This was stupid - he felt downright silly, singing to an android in the middle of the otherwise silent medbay; but the other patients were asleep, and the girl was staring at him attentively, so it couldnāt beĀ hurting anything, right?
"And if that diamond ring turns brass, Papaās gonna buy you a looking glass. And if that looking glass gets broke, Papaās gonna buy you a billy goat. And if that billy goat wonāt pull, Papaās gonna buy you a cart and bull. And if that cart and bull turn over, Papaās gonna buy you a dog named Roverā¦"
Was he even any good at this? The girlās lashes had drooped - was that a good sign? He wasnāt sure; androids were occasionally hard to figure out - but he stood, which didnāt seem to ruffle the girl much, and after a moment of hesitation, he started in a little quieter, snagging a spare blanket from nearby; he had no doubt she probably didnāt need it, but, damn it, he wanted to do this.
"And if that dog named Rover wonāt bark, Papaās gonna buy you a horse and cartā¦" He draped the blanket carefully over her, tucking her gently into the bed. "And if that horse and cart fall downā¦" Her eyes were completely closed now, and he wasnāt completely sure, but he thought she hadā¦shut down? Was in standby? Gone toĀ sleep?
"ā¦youāll still be the sweetest little baby in town."
