thinking about "it's unreasonable to assume that a character knows what genre they're in" and how in series 1-3, Merlin (and the audience) thinks that he's in a fantasy adventure comedy. no one realises that he's in a tragedy until it's too late.

#I do stand by what I said literally a few minutes ago about how calling merlin a tragedy is giving the writers too much credit #but I think you could twist it and say that the writers also think merlin is a comedy and don't realise that it's a tragedy until series 4 #which makes it worse. because so many things that happen in the first half of the show are absolutely tragic but are played as comedy #the end of 'the sins of the father' where uther says that merlin is “a trusted ally in the fight against magic” THATS FUCKING DEVASTATING #but it's played as funny #and it's only when you reframe the genre that you realise how truly heartbreaking it all is #bbc merlin #merlin #merlin meta

#i just kinda think that maximus is tragic in even more ways than we give him credit for #like obviously the loss of his wife and son is the primary tragedy and the main grief of his heart through the movie #but even more than the death of marcus aurelius is the fact that maximus has to reconcile the marcus he knew and loved and trusted #with the marcus who (1) allowed rome to focus on conquest rather than progress #(2) neglected his own son and indirectly caused rome to fall under the tyranny of a dictator #and (3) is both the opponent and perpetrator of many of the evils maximus has to bear #maximus has always imagined rome as a golden place filled with light #and he has to go through quite a painful enlightening #to see that rome is corrupt and brutal and dark much like he considered the barbarians #and what an incredible thing that maximus begins fighting alongside and allying with the very barbarians he used to conquer!#juba and haken would have been his enemies if they were not his fellow gladiators #and he becomes their brother in defiance of the roman emperor (an office he has always served)#the battle of carthage is INCREDIBLE because maximus is not only winning the victory humiliating commodus introducing himself as a champion #but ALSO showing that he has ZERO love for rome by becoming the leader of the “barbarian horde” and defeating the roman competitors #it's a statement just as his removal of his tattoo is a statement #i just. think this movie is amazing and i love it so much #and i love maximus so much more knowing he has to overcome so much more tragedy than is immediately apparent #he has to overcome his own devastation and disillusionment to find himself again #and it's in finding his quest for revenge and redemption that he accepts the past and creates a new future #literally MARRY ME SIR #gladiator #maximus #maixmus decimus meridius #gladiator 2000 #russell crowe #text posts

had rhiannon thoughts and I do like the concept of her in early game struggling to do any divination bc she’s realising her powers are not like what they used to be (tadpole nerf), and if she does see the visions it’s difficult to communicate exactly what they are - it’s like when you have a word on the tip of your tongue. she knows what she’s seeing, she has seen it before, but she can’t articulate it well.

i also like the concept of the tadpole interfering with her divination too. I imagine the process would take a good deal of mental clarity though she’s been doing it for so long before it’s second nature, but the tadpole’s presence and its sporadic movements ruin her concentration.

anyway im thinking of a scene with her in act 1 where she invites you to do a reading with her because she wants to better understand the group’s situation but the moon is bright and clear, and her tadpole is staying dormant so we should take advantage of that, no? and you can help her prepare what she needs and it’s similar to the gale scene where she shows off her skill to you and she can either do a general reading of the group’s journey (in which case she sees a vision of a shadowed sky, a hand of judgement, a guiltless blade) or if you’re more interested in a personal 🤭 reading she can read your future in romance and she’ll ask you if there’s anyone who caught your eye because she loves a good gosh sesh 🤭🤭🤭😁 (and if you say you did she’s like oh me? that’s not particularly exciting gossip, go pick someone else so we can have a good giggle about it.)

#I was thinking about it earlier I like the concept of Rhiannon being eager to see other ppl’s futures but not exactly her #bc that’ll invite misfortune 😭 and I think she lets fate run their course #she thinks selûne has cursed her bc every time she reads her own fate the worst outcomes come true #so she’s like. dats none of my business anymore #I think shadowheart snarks at her a lot early game esp with her inability to do proper readings #she’s like u know that’s bs right 🙄🙄😒 rhiannon is like sorry not all of us like to be boring 🙄😒#but I want a scene with them 🤭 maybe it’s this ^ where shadowheart actually takes her up on the reading offer #and it’s after shar reveal so rhiannon sees a moon engulfed in shadow / two paths in a forest #and I think she’s going to try see more but her vision is suddenly blocked and then shadowheart gets the shar slap #and she’s like whatever this is a waste of time anyone could’ve told me this 😒 and rhiannon is like ???? what the #more concerned about her vision getting clouded <- she’s been born with the divine insight that I think being unable to do it IS a worry #and in act 2 it gets even more difficult for her bc she’s in shar’s presence #in general i imagine act 2 is very hostile for her since she’s a selûnite. the only place where she’s able to do a form of reading is in #last light inn under Isobel’s light bubble. anywhere else is near impossible and I imagine the place just /feels/ hostile to her too #and it gets worse when they go into the shar temple and start heading towards the night song. like it would just feel oppressive towards #her that it gets so difficult to walk and breathe. it’s like a constant pressure being applied to hold her down #but she’s insistent bc she saw a thread /in/ here there is someone she can /still/ help. the thought of the ruined village #deeply affecting rhiannon bc it’s such a tragedy and she’s like. why hasn’t any of the other oracles foreseen this? how can we not know?#what is the point of our visions when it allows things like this to happen? and she’s not the one to talk - she had forsaken her post a #long time ago. she was wasting time in waterdeep giving petty fortunes in the church but there’s villages like this who are being ruined #homes being destroyed people getting killed. and for what? and why couldn’t /she/ help? and maybe her faith in selûne starts to doubt too #bc she’s like if you had known why couldn’t you tell me. these people have put their faith in you but what have you done to deserve it.#and maybe that’s overtly harsh but I think shadowheart’s sharran rhetoric DOES get to her and rhiannon IS constantly skeptical of selûne #as well. her faith towards her isn’t blind and all the visions she receives are questioned. but I think she’s just devastated to see what #happened. and when she finds out there is one more lost soul out in the shadows that she can help she becomes determined to find them bc #that’s something she can do Now. so even if the temple is oppressive to her she will still go down there and try to find them #which is ofc aylin 🤭

i dont think the end of asoiaf is going to make everyone happy but i do think calling it nihilistic garbage is not the answer either, i do have a lot of critiques about stuff from these books and how germ writes with just #vibesandfetishes for worldbuilding but he writes really good character moments but i think everyone expecting a disney ending for every single character as a fixit for the show is just not gonna work especially with twow potentially being a much darker book,am i attached to some of his characters? definitely do i think there's narrative stucture rules he's going by by having characters be in their darkest hour before the climax? yes , do i think everyone is going to have a perfect ending? well no
