Warning(s): Langdon isn't married in this, depictions of violence
Summary: (Y/n) has a great day every day. But Frank only has a great day if (Y/n) looks at him. (Otherwise known as Frank being down bad, everyone else knowing, but (Y/n) being completely oblivious)
Author's Note: Shoutout to the ER Ken line for inspiring me to make a story where that summary could work (cannot pass up a good Barbie reference). Also, shoutout to @emziess who seems to have a talent for making Langdon's eyes look so fucking bright in these gifs.
Anyway, go check out my prompt list! It's linked at the bottom!
----------------------
The first time I heard about Frank having a crush on someone in the hospital, it was from Cassie.
I had been sitting at one of the workstations, filling out the chart for a new patient who needed to be sent for an MRI to confirm a theory I had. Frank was sitting across from me. I had been so focused on my charts that I didn't even realize that he wasn't working on anything.
"Hey, (Y/n)," he said.
"Yes, Frank," I replied, mimicking his tone. I only ever used his first name if I was joking around or incredibly angry. He was a hard person to be incredibly angry at.
He let out an airy chuckle and glanced at the desk for a moment before looking back at me.
"Do you have a favorite coffee shop," he asked.
"Honestly, I can't remember the last time I went to a coffee shop," I shrugged. "I got an espresso machine as a little gift to myself a few years ago now and it has been a lifesaver. Why? Were you looking for recommendations?"
Frank seemed to deflate a little bit after my comment. "Yeah, yeah, I was. Don't worry about it though."
"Okay...," I pretended to be more suspicious of him than I was. "But if you want to get an espresso machine, I will happily send you a link to the one I have."
"Thank you," he nodded, smiling just a little bit more. "Gotta check on a patient. See ya in a bit."
"You too," I blindly waved at him as I concentrated on the computer screen.
Cassie walked over soon after, stopping next to my seat so she could look at the list of current patients.
"And done," I said as I scanned my ID and logged out of the computer. "Fingers crossed that man isn't here for half a day."
Cassie chuckled at that. "You caught that one pretty quick."
"It helps when a patient is cooperative and the family are forthcoming," I explained.
"And when you're very good at your job," she nudged me.
"I was trying to be humble." I shrugged. "How's your day going?"
"Not as chaotic as usual, but it's still the Pitt," she replied.
"Fair."
I saw her turn around and glance around the room. "I do have some interesting gossip, if you'd like it."
"Okay?" I chuckled.
"People are saying that Langdon has a crush on someone," she reported, giving me a look that almost seemed proud.
I had to fight to not let the disappointment that shot through me show on my face.
Frank and I were about as close to being best friends as you could be when you meet as adults. I thought that he would have been the one to tell me about that. At least, that's the reasoning that I used for myself. Because that would be more acceptable than admitting that I was jealous of a person I don't know the identity of.
"A crush?" I joked. "What is this? High school?"
"Are you fishing for a Bowling for Soup joke?"
"Absolutely," I nodded at her. "Anyway, did this gossip include the name of this crush?"
"I was hoping you would have one," she replied. "You two are closer than anyone else I know here."
"He didn't say a word about it," I shrugged. "I'll let you know if I find out."
"Okay," she said with an amused look. She clearly knew something that I didn't but wouldn't tell me a thing. I furrowed my eyebrows at her. "Gotta go, no rest for the wicked, right?"
"Right," I replied. She walked away quickly, leaving me to look back at the screen and find my next patient.
My conversation with Cassie wouldn't be the only weird interaction I had that day.
A while later, I would find myself walking over to the nurse's station. Dana was typing away at a computer while Frank was staring at the screen over her head. He was tapping away on the table. My focus turned to a bouquet of flowers on the counter.
"These are pretty," I commented, leaning on the counter next to Frank. "Do they need to go to any particular patient?"
"Nope, they were for the department," Dana replied. "Some parents came in to let us know that their kid pulled through. Said that we saved his life."
"Makes it all worth it," I decided.
"Didn't realize you were a fan of flowers," Frank commented.
"Only certain ones."
"Such as?"
"Peonies," I answered. "Easily the prettiest."
"Noted."
I turned to look at him. "Why?"
He seemed to panic for a moment before shrugging. "Feels like a good thing to know."
Dana placed a hand over her face, clearly hiding a laugh.
I gave her a confused look. She just waved me off.
I just shrugged. "Alright, no time to be picky. I'm just gonna pick the first thing I see- oh no."
Frank let out a laugh before quickly stopping himself.
"No, no, no, I changed my mind."
Dana raised an eyebrow at me.
"Based on the information, this looks like a potential... misuse of home goods," I explained. I tried to sound more successful than I would by saying that someone shoved something up their ass that they shouldn't have. "Last time I had a case like this, I had some... trouble being professional."
"I see."
"Yeah..." I muttered. "I guess I'll go-"
"I'll take this one," Frank stopped me.
"No, it's fine-"
"Nope, I'm taking this one," he insisted.
"Why?"
"Haven't you figured out that I'd do just about anything you asked me too?"
I stepped forward and hugged him. "My hero."
He chuckled almost directly into my ear before stepping back. "Yeah, yeah, whatever."
As he walked away, I turned back to the screen. "I'll have to buy him dinner or something for that one. Really took one for the team there."
Dana was giving me a weird look. It looked almost identical to the look that Cassie had given me earlier.
"What," I asked.
"Nothing, nothing," she shook her head. "Just wondering, have you heard about Langdon's mystery crush?"
"Maybe... do you know who it is?"
She just stared at me for a moment. "Nope, no idea."
I didn't believe her, but I didn't have the time to question her. "Okay..."
I didn't have another strange conversation that day.
Instead, all I got were some weird looks from time to time. I had caught a few of the nurses side-eyeing me. Dana also seemed to be watching me more than usual. It was all just a bit weird.
It was hard not to notice. Everyone else seemed to be aware of something that involved me, but no one would actually tell me what. It was getting to the point of being annoying.
So, when an unruly patient was wheeled into the Pitt, I was almost grateful for the opportunity to focus on something else.
He was already unhappy when he got there. The behaviors all lined up with some kind of withdrawal.
I had made the decision to move one of the nurses out of the way due to how belligerent the man had become. I don't know why. It wasn't like I was particularly stronger than any of them.
I wasn't strong enough to even pose a threat to the man.
That was proven when the man's arm had gotten out of the hands of those trying to restrain him. He swung full force to one side, cleanly clocking me in the face.
I don't know the full picture of what happened after that.
The full image of the world only truly comes into focus while I was sitting in the longue alone. I had my eyes closed; head tilted back as I tried to let the noise of the world die down for just a little bit. Just long enough to get my bearings.
I opened my eyes when the door opened.
"Hey," Frank said as he stepped inside and closed the door behind me. "How you feeling?"
"I feel like I've got whiplash," I replied. "How's it going?"
"Patient is sedated and is awaiting a psych consult," he explained before coming over to sit next to me. "Here, got some ice to help with the swelling."
"My hero," I grinned as I grabbed the ice pack. I held it to my cheek. "I've called you that twice today."
"And I haven't deserved it either time."
"Oh, shut up and take the compliment." I heard him chuckle. "You should get back out there."
"Not until I'm sure that you're okay."
I sat up straight and pulled the ice away, letting him look at the wound on my face.
Frank was incredibly gentle with me. His fingers were featherlike as he checked on me. I knew he could tell how warm my face was getting. I just didn't know what he would want to do with that information.
"Hey, umm, McKay and Dana have both mentioned something interesting," I said. "They mentioned that you had a crush on someone."
"Oh?"
"Yeah," I continued, returning the ice to my face as he leaned back. "Do you?"
"Um, yeah, you could call it a crush." he shrugged.
"Well, out with it!" I pushed, shoving his shoulder a bit.
"It doesn't matter-"
"Of course, it matters!"
"Alright, alright," he chuckled. "If you remember to ask me at the end of the day, then I'll tell you."
"Deal," I reached out to shake his hand.
I glanced over his shoulder when I felt someone looking at me. I saw Robby and Collins being incredibly obvious about looking at us with what seemed like the hundredth weird look of the day. Then, I saw Robby nudge Collins's shoulder with his own, his face going completely soft as they chuckled to themselves.
"Do you think Collins and Robby are seeing each other again?" I pointed to the view behind us.
Frank turned around to look at them, which seemed to make them realize that we could see them, so they walked away.
When he turned back to look at me, there was this look of disbelief on his face. I furrowed my eyebrows at him. He seemed to snap out of it a moment later, acting as if nothing had happened.
"Don't know, maybe," he shrugged. "They're good together."
"I've always thought so."
Robby popped his head in a few moments later.
Frank muttered about how he would see me later. I nodded at him, thanking him for checking on me. He grinned as he muttered âyou're welcome" before continuing his path out of the room.
Robby focused on his mission of getting me to go home. He was sweet, always had been. But he seemed to forget that I cared significantly more about doing this job than I did about whatever bruises may come from it.
After a few minutes, he relented. He muttered about me taking a little more time to use the ice on my face before coming back. I accepted that compromise.
I was relieved that the rest of the day went significantly better. No deaths, no incredibly violent patients, no more moments of anxiety.
Except for the weird looks, which continued everywhere I went. God forbid that Frank and I worked on a case together. Everyone else in the room was looking at us like we were a time bomb that they were watching rapidly count down.
To put it very simply: I was more than happy by the time my shift ended.
Frank was waiting to walk me out to my car at the end of the day. I grinned as I made it over to him.
"Hey," he smiled.
"Hi," I let out a sigh, letting the tension roll off of my shoulders. I frowned when I saw him looking at the blooming bruise on my cheek. "Stop it. You're like the millionth person to give me a look that isn't normal."
"Are you in any pain?"
"It's sore, yeah, but nothing that some ibuprofen and ice can't fix." he didn't seem to believe me. I stepped closer to him. "Look at me. I'm fine. It's a bruise; no serious trauma, the bleeding is over, I have all my teeth. It's over and I'm okay."
He finally relented, nodding at me.
"You never told me who your crush was," I said as we started walking. I heard him sigh. "Bet you were hoping the hit would make me forget about that promise, huh?"
"I was hoping you'd have something distract you from asking again," he confessed.
When he let his sentence end there, I smacked his arm. "Well, out with it!"
"Why do you want to know so bad?"
"Because...," I trailed off for a moment. Why did I want to know so bad? To see if I could even compare to them? Just for the closure so I could move on at long last? "Because you're my friend. Probably my best friend."
"Yup, best friend," he nodded. I paused slightly at the tone he used. I couldn't figure out if he was just annoyed or if he was properly angry with me.
"What was that snark for?" I forced a chuckle to keep the conversation going.
"It's nothing."
"Oh my god," I said, stopping as we made it to our cars. "You are insufferable. Just tell me. What do you think is going to happen? Do you think I'll run off and spill your secret? I would have thought that you thought more of me than that."
"I don't think you'd do that," he admitted.
"Then, prove it by trusting me," I pushed.
He took a deep breath, running his hands over his face.
"Frank-"
"(Y/n), it's you."
Any sentence I had planned had died in the air. I stared at him in silence. There was no way that I didn't look as stunned as I felt.
It was like every weird event of the day had snapped into place. Like putting together a puzzle and finally sitting back to look at the complete image.
"Oh my god," I mumbled.
"(Y/n)..."
"Oh my god," I muttered again, taking a few steps back. He looked a bit panicked. "Oh, I'm so stupid."
He couldn't stop himself from chuckling a bit. "No, you aren't-"
"I am, actually, I really am," I insisted. "You asking me about my favorite coffee place..."
"I was trying to ask you out for coffee."
"McKay coming up to me afterwards and mentioning you having a crush on someone..."
"Her attempt to prove that you had no idea what I was doing when I asked about coffee."
"The comment about the flowers-"
"That was an accident."
"Everyone's weird looks today. Oh God, I thought Collins and Robby were sleeping together again."
I ran my hands over my face. I could hear Frank trying to stop himself from laughing at the whole series of events.
"I am such an idiot!" my sentence was muffled by my hands.
"Hey, hey," he stepped closer to me and pulled my hands away from my face. "You're not stupid. I am for not telling you sooner. You are brilliant. Part of why I... One of my favorite things about you is the fact that you're brilliant."
"Then, I'm just blind as a bat, thanks."
"Oh, for the love..." he cupped the sides of my face, getting even closer to me. I felt like my breath stopped completely. "You are amazing. Brilliant and kind and stubborn as hell and I love it. I adore it. All of it. Nothing else matters right now. Nothing outside of this moment matters."
I forced a chuckle, trying to break some of the tension. "Passionate?"
"A bit, yeah." he smiled at me.
There were a few seconds of silence. My eyes were jumping over every part of his face. His eyes were fixed on mine. I had lost hold of all concept of time at that moment.
I saw Frank open his mouth to speak, but I cut him off by leaning forward to kiss him. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. Gentle, loving. It felt like something had clicked into place. Like it was all a question of when and not if.
My hands grabbed onto the front of his scrubs. It was as if I was scared that he was going to change his mind suddenly. His hands moved to my sides, holding me just a bit tighter. It was enough to calm whatever subconscious part of my mind that had thought he was going to walk away.
I pulled away first. Frank had this smile on his face that made me chuckle quietly to myself.
"I... I don't think I mentioned this," I said, " but I do really like you."
His smile got a little bit bigger as he leaned his forehead on mine. He didn't say anything. He looked at me with the kindest eyes I had ever seen.
"I have just gotten to this point where my brain will automatically draw any other conclusion than someone's showing interest. It's a habit that I've had since high school. Helped me avoid a few pranks, but now... it just... hinders... stuff..."
"Just have to prove you wrong then," he replied before leaning in to kiss me again.
It was at that moment that I realized how much I wanted to stay there for as long as possible. And I would be content there. Because I'd be with him.

hello!! iâve been reading through your fics and i absolutely adore how you write sevika and the sweet moments shared!! i had a request idea about sevika maybe getting reading glasses, and being the stubborn woman that she is, putting it off forever, maybe feeling insecure. but OBVIOUSLY reader loves it and thinks she looks soo cute (and hot)!! tysm!!!
Thank you so much!! đЎđŤśđť
Ugh Sevika in glasses kills me! I think Iâve seen this picture more than Iâve seen my own family at this point đ¤
Wife!Sevika x Reader - Domestic Threat
Summary: Sevika gets reading glasses and you immediately become obsessed with how good she looks in them.
Sevika had spent months pretending she could still read perfectly fine.
Which mostly meant holding papers at armâs length with a deep scowl, squinting at receipts like theyâd personally offended her, and muttering things like, âThe printâs just too damn small these days.â
You knew better.
âYouâre literally reading the menu with one eye closed.â
âIâm concentrating.â
âBabe. You almost ordered raw fish for dessert.â
âIt was badly organised.â
She refused to book an eye test for so long that you eventually started leaving pairs of cheap reading glasses around the apartment just to annoy her. Sheâd glare every time she spotted them.
One morning, after catching her trying to read a report by holding it directly beneath the brightest lamp in the house, you finally folded your arms.
âSevika.â
âNo.â
âYou donât even know what I was going to say.â
âYes I do.â
And somehow, despite all the grumbling and dramatic sighing, she ended up at the appointment anyway.
The real problem started after she actually got the glasses.
Because Sevika, terrifying underground chem-baron with a mechanical arm and enough intimidation to make grown men cry, suddenly became weirdly shy about a pair of thin rectangular frames.
Sheâd wear them only when absolutely necessary. Usually late at night when she thought you were asleep, perched low on her nose while she read paperwork in bed.
The first time you properly saw them, your heart nearly exploded.
You crawled closer across the bed, sitting on her lap before she could escape, gently grabbing her jaw to tilt her face toward you. The glasses made her look unfairly attractive somehow. Sharper. Softer. More domestic. Like seeing a side of Sevika nobody else got to touch.
You were obsessed instantly.
âYouâre staring,â she muttered.
âIâm appreciating.â
âYouâve been appreciating for five straight minutes.â
âAnd Iâll do five more.â
A faint flush crept across her face, which only made things worse for her because now you were completely unbearable about it.
You kept stealing her glasses off the bedside table just to put them on her yourself. Youâd kiss the bridge of her nose where they rested. Call her pretty every single time she wore them.
Sometimes youâd walk into her office and find her reading with them perched low while she frowned at paperwork, and it genuinely knocked the breath from your lungs.
âYou cannot look like that while doing taxes,â you complained once.
âThe hell does that mean?â
âIt means Iâm trying to behave and youâre making it difficult.â
Sevika snorted, but you still caught the tiny smile tugging at her mouth as she looked back down at the page.
Eventually, she stopped hiding them.
Mostly because every single time she wore them, you looked at her like sheâd hung the stars by hand.
Jackie Taylor dirty secret. Humping at pillow at night while wearing readers hoodie, even though she insists weâre just friends.
and i raise you: jackie taylorâs dirty secrets (plural). because we all know jackie doesnât half ass shit, so why settle for one singular secret when she can have so many of themâŚ?
now, youâre obviously right: jackie who humps her pillows at night while wearing your clothes. youâve left one of your comfy, oversized hoodies at her place after the last sleepover, so who can blame her, for just trying it on? who can blame her for feeling dizzy, suddenly so surrounded by your scent itâs all she can smell? who can blame her, really, for starting to feel herself up through her underwear? wearing only your hoodie & her panties, thatâs like the only reasonable thing to do!! and so what if it feels a little too good to press a finger down where her clit is...?
it isnât long before jackie needs more stimulation than that, though...jackie, who gets sooo needy & wet, itâs embarrassing, whimpering and whining as she rocks her cunt into her hand while pressing her nose into the collar of your hoodie.
honestly, jackie doesnât know how her pillow ends up smushed between her thighs, or why she ends up straddling it, riding it like she never wouldâve ridden jeff in all her life, but once she finds the right angle, she doesnât care about anything beyond the pleasure that shoots up from her core as she drags her swollen clit over the fabric, leaving a smear of her wetness on the pillow case.
that leads us to secret number 2: pervert!jackie, who actually starts stealing your stuff, knowing how good it will make her feel. whether itâs a sweaty shirt she fishes from your bag after practice (which, okay, sheâs officially gross for that, but no one has to know!!), or a hairbrush from your vanity...jackie, who squirts for the first time while fucking herself with its handleâŚâŚ.
jackie, who would never tell anyone that the only reason she replaced the picture of her & shauna on her bedside table with a polaroid of her & you, is so that she can look at you while she makes herself come.
jackie, who never really masturbated a lot before all that. she never got the appeal, and never let her mind wander to anything that would really turn her on and make her wet enough for it to feel good. so naturally, it never worked, and pushing just one single finger inside would be as painful as it was whenever jeff tried. then, jackie discovers the wonders of fantasizing about you, and itâs like a switch has been flipped. once she gets the hang of it, it seems like all the years of missing out are catching up to her.
thinkinggg jackie whoâs fucking horny all the time. now that she knows how to take care of it, itâs like her body wants her to, 24/7. itâs honestly pathetic. watching you change before practice suddenly makes her clit pulse in her panties, and in the showers, sheâs grateful for the water running down her body, or else youâd surely see all the wetness sticking to her inner thighs because she cannot keep her eyes to herself. only watching you on the field has her knees weak.
jackie, who canât help but shove a hand into her shorts after everyone has left the changing rooms, because sheâs just that turned on, who almost gets caught by you because sheâs late for practice and you were sent to get her.
(or maybe you did see herâŚ.? maybe you heard jackieâs panting, and the wet squelch of her fingers pumping in and out of her cunt all the way down the hall. maybe you sneaked up on the door and glanced inside, to see the team captain with a hand down her pants, eyes shut tight, mouth agape as she rubbed her fingers back and forth and held one of your shirts, but you stepped back, making sure to cause some noise so jackie would hear as you approached again.)
Oh I can imagine the z team being so jealous of phenomaman, a special sonar
Oh yeah, they be jealous.
Flambae & Prism
"Why the fuck is he hanging out wit that depressed fuck so much now?" Flambae huffs as he buys Prism a soda at the break room vending machine.
Prism sighs and buys her bestie his favorite bag of jalapeno kettle chips from the snack machine. "Bitch, how am I supposed to know?! What I want to know is why it pisses me off so much...and why we don't get to hold him when he's full kitty!"
"Hey Phen, you ready?" They hear Robert ask outside the break room.
"That I am dead fish man! Ever since we started our love making sessions I have been feeling much better about not being attractive." The booming voice of team A's idiot calls out.
"I...heh, that's good bud. Let me just get a Twinkie real quick."
Prism and Chad quickly sit at the table to make it look like they hadn't been doing anything (they hadn't been anyway).
"No need! I have already obtained your favorite form of sustenance! An entire box!"
"Wow, thanks Phen. Come on, let's go to our tree."
Our tree?
OUR TREE?!
Pop!
Crunch!
Whoops.
CoupĂŠ & Punch Up
Sluuurrrrrppppp
Punch Up sighed softly as he watched his love eat her bowl of ramen noodles (her angry meal), a dark look in her eyes.
Her and Punch Up had decided to eat their lunch close to the office today, nothing fancy. Just a bowl of spicy noodles and a bowl of beef stew mixed with mashed potatoes.
"My love, you cannot attack Phenomaman." He says softly, pointing his spoon at her. A small glob of his favorite stew dropped onto the table making him curse and go to wipe it up.
"This is the fifth lunch invitation that Robert has ignored in favor of being cuddled by...him." She frowns as she wipes her mouth off with her wrist. "Why does a A-Team member get to spend more time with OUR dispatcher than us?!"
"He's just trying to make the big lad feel better after his break up, that's all! It's not like they're an-" "He just kissed Robert."
Punch Up turned so fast that he thought he heard something snap. When he looked over at where Robert and pretty boy were sitting, he bit back a growl when he saw Phen pressing their heads together with a faint blush and smile on his face.
Crack!
The two look down at their table and meal only to see that they had each broken their bowl/the table.
"...damn it." They both mutter.
Waterboy & Mal
"Hey Robbie, I got you some-oh." Mal freezes when she sees that she had just walked in on Robert sitting on Phens' lap, the two of them just idly chatting away.
"Hm? Oh! Hey Mal, what's up?" Robert smiles softly.
Smiles.
He never smiles.
Gritting her teeth she slams a package of cookies on the table and goes to rip Robert away from the man when Blonde walks in.
"Hey guys!" She smiles.
Growling, Mal stomps and quickly leaves through a portal.
Meanwhile, Waterboy (who had been hidden in the air vents, huffs and takes a photo of Roberts confused but cute face.
"S-Stupid Phen-idiot. Hogging Mr. Robert..." He mumbled in a mix of sadness and anger.
Invis & Golem
Angrily munching on her favorite popcorn, Visi tries her hardest to focus on the game her and Golem were playing but she just couldn't!
She'd been following Robert and Phen around all day and caught them almost making out twice! TWICE!
"You okay baby?"
Looking up at her friend after she'd been sniped, she sighed. "What the fuck does that golden retriever have that we don't?! Why is Robert so obsessed with him?!" She growls, stomping her foot a couple times.
"Honestly? I don't know but I need to find out. I miss being able to pet him." Golem sighed.
Visi jumps up in shock. "YOU GOT TO PET HIM?!"
Sonar
There is only one thing Sonar does when he sees Phen kissing Roberts head.
He marches right over and snatched him away.
He turns into his Megabat form and immediately hides in a tree with Robert tucked safely in his wings.
synopsis; dunk thinks of what can be despite his struggle to speak to you.
genre; fluff
warnings; none!
a/n; unsure where i was goin with this, but i thought it was cute enough to post. have my humble offering, enjoy!
Ser Duncan wasnât one for words. He found more often than not, him and his mouth would lead to trouble. Or lead those he spoke to, to think he was an absolute fool.
That feeling grew tenfold when he first met you.
A barmaid you were, attentive and sweet. It felt as if warm water had soaked his skin when you spoke. Your smile a fresh breeze, your heart to serve piercing his very own.
Egg watched him, the oaf he was, sit there and watch you.
âSer Duncan,â he called, not too loud, but too firm a child his age. Yet the man was too busy imagining what could be, the hedge knight and barmaid. Youâd have very little, but itâd be enough.
âSer.â
âQuiet, Egg,â Duncan grumbled, unable to tear his gaze away from you.
âYouâre staring, ser.â
âAyeâno. Iâm not,â the accusation was enough to turn his head. âFinish your cider.â
The boy sighed, the man watched. Duncan had been to dozens of inns, spoken to many women alike. None nearly half as riveting to speak to, nor did their eyes shine like yours. It took what logic he had left within him to leave for the night.
âI cannot keep this up, ser,â Egg had told him that same night. The stables theyâd taken Thunder and Chestnut were some steps away.
âWeâre almost there. No need to complain now, lad.â
âNot the walk, ser. YourâŚâ
Duncan glanced down at the boy, only to be met with the prince staring back him. His brows furrowed, âspit it out.â
âYour inability to speak to women,â Egg said, and after a considerable pause, âser.â
âMy inabilityâdo you want a clout in the ear?â Duncan threatened, yet his words held no weight. As he kept his eye on Egg, he realized the warning wasnât as effective as he thoughtâif it ever was.
Duncan shook his head with a small huff, ââŚI speak well enough. Just caught off guard, is all.â
Well enough. Given that heâd know you were to join him and Egg merely hours later, he wouldâve mumbled in practice throughout the night.
Now he was stuck between a woman who often tongue-tied him and a boy whoâd stare like a fish. Duncan tried, he swore to the Gods, to be competent enough to carry a simple conversation with you.
âHow often is it you sleep under the stars?â You asked one night, keeping your voice hushed. With a new companion, the knight couldnât offer much at the moment between the three of you. Yet it was domestic, sleeping underneath an elm tree with the boy between you two.
Heâd never known such a thing.
Duncan let the silence linger far too long as if he hadnât heard you at all. But he glanced your way, and all he could say was, âme?â
âYes, you.â
Seven above, your smile was like a burning brand searing into his thick skull, hindering him to think for himself. Why would he, when heâd prefer to admire you all night?
Supposing he would until sleep took him. Even then heâd dream of you, unable to escape the thought that was you.
âSer?â
Duncan blinked, realizing far too late heâd left her in silence.
âUh, yeah. Yes,â he muttered, his head turning once, twice, as if he looked at you for too long heâd melt. âWhatâŚwhat did you ask, mâlady?â
And so you found yourself repeating, âhow often do you sleep under the stars?â
The wind blew.
âOften.â Is all that Duncan provided. Then, âI wouldnât worry, mâlady. Weâll find ourselves a stable or if the Gods will it, an inn.â
âItâs hard on the back,â you murmured, gazing up at the stars pasting the leaves. âBut Iâm not one to complain.â
â..You donât mind?â
âNot truly.â
Duncan kept his hands over his abdomen, his eyes following yours up towards the night sky. For a moment he wondered, would you spend the rest of your life this way? On the road, going from kingdom to kingdom, sleeping under trees and eating tough meat. Spending the rest of your life with him. Gods, he was a fool to think of it.
âI could imagine falling asleep like this, until itâs my time.â You added like youâd heard his mind at work.
âYou couldâ?â Duncan stammered, his voice now above a whisper. An apology came immediately after, not wanting to disturb Egg.
You hummed, his heart pounded.
âYou might think me mad, but I feel safer out here than I ever felt in that inn.â
âHowâŚhow does that make any sense, mâlady?â
âI have a knight at my side.â
Duncan found your gaze in the dark, his expression nothing but longing. Pathetic, sopping yearning that made the blood rush to his ears.
âGoodnight, ser.â
Long after you turned to your side Duncan kept his eyes on you. He knew he had his duty, an oath to keep until his last breath. That night, under the stars and crackle of fire, he swore both to you.

chapter 1 l prelude part 1 l 2
Jin has to leave in the middle of the night.
Your breath comes out in thick, white puffs as you tiptoe out of the house at 1am where thereâs a black Santa Fe SUV idling in front of the stairs.
The shadow you despise waits for you at the bottom, and not a single word or look is exchanged as he opens the rear door, although faint remnants of his cologne and cigarettes follow as you slide onto the leather seat, opposite of your brother. While you buckle up, a morose ambiance fills the silence between you, Jeonggukâs hand finding yours and giving a gentle squeeze that grounds him.
âSo heâs heading out on a fishing boat?â you ask to crack the sullenness after the SUV speeds out onto the road towards the highway.
âMhmm,â he responds in a dull tone.
âHeâll enjoy that.â
âYeah.â He turns his head to swallow a bittersweet expression. âA while ago, I caught him looking up his chances of getting into NASA. That was always his dream.â A smile breaks out onto your face, eclipsing the force of intense gravity weighing in your chest.
âHeâd make a good astronaut.â A lump in your throat, you look out of the tinted window, frowning at the sky blocked by pollution and the fog of an oncoming snowstorm. âMaybe on the boat, heâll get to see more stars. Canât see shit in the city.â
âRemember when we tried to buy him that star for his birthday?â
âOh, yeah!â You half-laugh, brightening at the memory. âHe wouldnât have been so pissed it was a scam if you hadnât stolen his card to pay for it.â
âIt was your idea!â
âWell, you were the one who spent all the money we both saved up to buy that jacket for-â You close your stupid mouth when Jeonggukâs expression drops and hardens.
âIâm sorry.â Remorse builds in your gut at the way his teeth gnaw at his lip ring, a dent between his brows, and that distant glaze in his eyes takes over. You grab his hand again before he can drift too far away.
âDonât go there, okay?â
To try and keep him with you, you pull his arm to rest over the console, and start tapping your fingertips over his jacket to a tune you hear in your head, visualizing black and white keys.
ââMerry go round of lifeâ?â he inquires after you get through the first few phrases of the intro. You smile, happy that he was able to pick up on it so quickly.
âYour favorite.â
âWhenâs the last time you played?â The shakiness in his voice dissipates.
âItâs been a while. But Jay has a nice Steinway in the living room that Iâm pretty sure is just for show, so Iâll play that whenever I have time.â
âHm.â The car hums in silence for a few moments. Now that youâre back home, things wonât ever be the same as before but at least youâre on the same side of the world as your brother. You wonât be in the same house, but youâll be in the same city, doing the same things - in a way.
Most importantly, youâll be there for each other. And thatâs what gives you hope that everything will be okay. Even if Jin wonât be here, at least you have- Oh!
You sit up straight, turning to face Jeongguk fully, suddenly remembering what youâve been itching to ask him about.
âDo you think somethingâs going on with Jin and Hope?â
âHuh?â his eyebrows raise as if you caught him off guard, but a small smile follows. âOh. Yeah.â
You gasp excitedly. âSpill!â
âThereâs not much to tell.â
âThen how do you know?â
He shrugs. âHyungâs not as subtle as he thinks whenever Hope comes around.â
âYou never tried asking him?â
âYou know he doesnât talk about anything like that.â
Yeah. Jin has always had a penchant for dismissing or deflecting any talk of his relationships outside of work, instead turning the conversation back on you and Jeongguk. Not once has he mentioned friends beyond the capos in his circle, and itâs always made you sad just how much heâs missed out on because of circumstances out of his control.
âMaybe now heâll have some more freedom to make connections.â
âHeâs on the run, Angel. He wonât get to stay in one place long enough.â
âMm.â You almost retort that you know very well what thatâs like, but decide against it. Jin is going away for a completely different reason. Still. Neither of you were left with a choice.
âI wish we could go with him,â you whisper with a tug in your heart. Itâs been ages since youâve all been together, but now Jin is being ripped away. Itâs not fair. You just want your family.
Why is the universe hellbent on keeping that out of reach?
âMe too,â Jeongguk replies quietly. âBut we have duties to fulfill.â
âYou really think this is what we were born to do?â Jeonggukâs eyes flit between you and the back of the seat.
âItâs what hyung and I were born to do.â
Thatâs a small punch to your gut. So just like everyone else, your brothers think you werenât supposed to be here at all. Which is why your father never paid attention to you. Although that Kwang Dongwook prick was right - your brothers were merely pawns in his empire and had no real connection to them otherwise - they were planned.Â
They werenât a mistake. They were wanted, if only for business. It stings, that your brothers have been used by your father, even now from the grave. It should be a good thing that you were almost always invisible to him.
So why doesnât it feel that way?
A faceless woman flashes in your mind. Your mother left before you developed a memory. Like she wanted to make sure you wouldnât remember how she didnât want you, either.
Would she want you now?
âHey,â your brother says, breaking the silence and the dissonance in your head. âItâs good that youâre here.â
âWell, yeah.â You muster a smile, turning back to him. âCanât let you mess everything up all by yourself.â
He rolls his eyes at your teasing and shoves your shoulder. You snicker and lean back over, holding up your fist.
âRide or die, remember?â He tries to maintain his scorn but ultimately sighs and knocks his fist against yours, and you do the handshake you made up when you were kids. It ends with a mutual slap on the side of the neck and finger guns, and you wear matching smiles as you sit back against the leather seats, the air becoming a little lighter between you.
âYâknow, that shit you pulled with Kwang last night, hyungâs been bragging about it.â
âReally? Heâs not⌠mad?â
âAre you kidding? Heâs proud of how you handled that.â
âOh. I thought you both would be upset that I stirred up trouble.â
Jeongguk shakes his head. âNah. You just proved to them that youâre one of us.â You tense. There it is again.
One of us. Cut from the same cloth, capable of spilling blood without consequences. And without getting your hands dirty.
You glance to the front where Dâs sitting in the passengerâs seat, back straight as he focuses on the dark road ahead. Heâll probably be the one to keep your hands clean.
I donât hurt people who donât deserve it.
Well. What did you do to deserve it? You pick at your nails as you speak with false nonchalance.
âYâknow, I almost came back home a few years ago.â
âReally?â
âYeah. I missed you guys, and I thought Jin would let me come see you, but you werenât doing well and-â you stop yourself. âAnyway, I was at this bar, and I may or may not have played some poker and won a whole bunch of money to get a flight home. It really pissed off a bunch of the men, and this one dude actually ended up following me to my hotel to steal back 500,000 won. Isnât that pathetic?â
Jeonggukâs head snaps to you, a perturbed expression taking over.
âWhat? Why didnât you say something?â
You shrug. âHe was just a desperate, low-life, sore loser. He wasnât worth it.â Still isnât, you wish you could say.
âDid you get his name?â He asks ominously enough to make you feel a tad nervous. So who knows how the man you secretly speak of is feeling.
âUm,â you pretend to think. âIt was something insignificant, so I donât remember.â
âThat was dangerous, Angel. If something happened to youâŚâ
âI know. It was a reckless mistake and it wonât ever happen again.â
âGood.â
D has not moved or shifted once and you wonder if he even heard you.
The car finally turns down a road lined with a chain-link fence, enclosing the expansive marina filled with fishing boats. After weaving through a narrow maze of warehouses, Jin suddenly comes into view, standing in front of an empty dock with his arms crossed and upon seeing the SUV, he quickly strides over.
Before the driver has had a chance to brake, Jin grabs the handle, swinging it open with a huge smile on his face. You slide out and into his arms that wrap you up in a tight hug.
You breathe in the smell of him; of homemade makgugksu and bungeoppang after a long day at school; of leaves falling on your evening strolls along the river banks as the autumn sun set on the horizon; of food cooking over a crackling fire while frogs and crickets chirped among the pine trees.
The smell of home.
âCan I get out?â Jeongguk demands behind you, boot nudging the backs of your thighs and you stagger forward still in Jinâs arms, turning around to ram yourself against the door. Jeongguk is strong, but your will is stronger as he pushes against it, and you snicker at his muffled, âyou annoying piece of shit!â
âYah, language!â Jin exclaims, tugging you away from the door.
âSheâs the one trying to trap me in here!â
Your oldest brother rolls his eyes as he pulls you to the side so Jeongguk can step out.
âYou two canât go 5 seconds without fighting?â
âWeâve gotta make up for all these years!â You defend.
Jeongguk glares at you as he straightens and slams the door behind him and you just hide yourself in Jinâs embrace. Seconds later, another door opens and shuts, and Jinâs muffled voice rumbles above your head.
âHey, D. Thanks for bringing them to me safe.â
You donât hear a response and assume he just silently acknowledged your brother, his swift footsteps against the gravel growing farther away. You peek away from Jinâs chest to watch him join the other guards across the yard.
Upon observing all of them surrounding the perimeter, youâre a little heart-stricken that you canât spend these final moments with your brother alone.
âWeâre good out here,â Jin assures you, taking your scanning of the docks as paranoia. âCops are on the other side of town. Hope made sure of it.â
You canât stop the teasing quirk of your lips as you tilt your head up at him. âHope, huh?â
âWhat?â he asks, looking between you and Jeongguk as you sneak a glance at each other.
âNothing.â
By the slight uptick in his brow, itâs obvious that heâs curious about what you know, but time is limited, and you figure he doesnât want to waste time finding out when this is about just the three of you.
âOh my god, is that a hoodie?â you ask in a teasing manner, changing the subject as you fully look at your brotherâs casual, comfy outfit under his big coat. âI donât think Iâve seen you in one since I was nine. And that was because bro threw up on you after going on that roller coaster twelve times in a row.âÂ
Jeongguk shoves you roughly to the side and you laugh, the sound echoing in the old harbor. âAt least I was tall enough to even get on the roller coaster. Or any of the rides for that matter that werenât for little kids.â
âYou surpassed the height requirement by the time you were 5, you extra large kangaroo!â
His eyes narrow and he holds up his fists, bending his knees in a typical fight stance. âCome at me, bro.â
You mirror him and circle each other while pretending to spar, neither of you flinching when your fake punches get close to being real.
âOh, lord,â Jin laughs, running a hand down his face as he stares between you again with a soft gaze when usually he would be telling you off for bickering and play-fighting. âYou made it past a minute this time.â
You jut a thumb back at your brother, ignoring his air punch to your shoulder. âHeâs gonna bully me way worse now that youâre leaving.â
âNo, he wonât,â Jin says, fixing Jeongguk with a semi-stern stare until he holds his hands up in mock defense.
âSure. As long as sheâs not a pain in my ass,â he harmlessly spits, mocking the way you stick your tongue out at him.
âYou two are the most dangerous people in the city now, you know that, right?â Jin muses.
A lull breezes past as that reality winds around this small bubble cradling you and your brothers, tightening until it pops with the truth that there is no time for fun and games anymore. Not outside, not where people can see.
Now you notice the bags that sit in a small pile just paces away from where you stand with your brothers. A small collection of two duffels, and two totes. All of Jinâs worldly belongings, all that he can bring, are packed up in those bags.
Fuck. This is torture. To have to watch him carry his life on board but leave you behind.
Noticing that youâve been staring, Jin turns back to grab the totes, and you and Jeongguk walk up to accept them.
âHereâs some food, it should last a few weeks,â he says, the heavy insulated bags containing various packed containers. âAnd I left all the recipes in there for whenever you get around to missing my cooking.â
âIt wonât be the same,â Jeongguk pouts.
âItâs better than nothing,â you point out. Jin smiles at you appreciatively, then reaches into the pockets of his big coat and pulls out two square white velvet boxes, passing one to each of you. Â
âAnd this is something a little extra special.â
You both open them at the same time, eyes widening when stunning Hermès rose-gold and steel watches that match the one on Jinâs wrist twinkle under the yellow light from the scattered lampposts.
âIâll keep mine set to your time, so no matter where I am, Iâll know when to call.â
You gawk at it as tears cloud your vision, so much so that you canât blink or move lest the dam breaks. Jinâs feet step into view and you donât look up as he takes out the watch, gently lifts your arm, and clasps it comfortably on your wrist.
âThere,â he murmurs. âPretty.â
He moves on to do the same with Jeongguk, and you can only watch the second hand tick around the expensive silver face and white-gold numbers.
Jin grasps your arm again, holding it next to Jeonggukâs, simply staring down at all of your matching watches. The bands are not too big for your wrist, but not too small for your brothersâ. Just right. And it doesnât hide the tattoo of Jeonggukâs initials sitting next to yours on the inside of Jinâs forearm.Â
âIâm so sorry I couldnât do better, that I couldnât prevent this,â Jin whispers, broken crack in his voice. He squeezes your wrist and your heart crumples. âYou know that if it was up to me, both of you would be out there doing whatever you want, without worrying about anything. I promise that when all of this blows over, Iâll come back so that you can go out and live your best lives.â
âItâs not your fault,â you croak. âI donât blame you, Iâm sorry if I made you think I do. The only person Iâve ever blamed for any of this is him. Heâs a bitch for forcing this onto us.â
You pray Jeongguk knows youâre talking about your father.
As you gaze up at Jin, you see the features he shares with the man partially responsible for your existence. The similar face shape, nose, strong chin, height and broad shoulders.
But his eyes are what set him apart. Jin has so much warmth and kindness and love in his beautiful brown eyes, things he holds for you and Jeongguk, things youâve never seen from your father.
The dam breaks and you cry for Jin. For the burdens he carries, not just for your fatherâs syndicate but for you and Jeongguk. For the responsibility he assumed to be your protector, your caretaker, when he shouldâve just been your big brother, your best friend. Youâre soon engulfed by his tender hug so you can bury puddles of tears into his sweater.
âBirdie, donât cry. Youâre gonna make it harder to leave.â
âI donât want you to leave. I just got back.â
âI know,â he whispers, rubbing between your shoulders. âBut itâs not forever. Weâll be a family again someday.â
âWe didnât even get to have a girlsâ night,â you pout sadly.
When Jeongguk entered his teen years and suddenly became âtoo coolâ to hang out with his little sister all the time, Jin started setting aside days on the weekend for just you, sending cool guy off with his friends. He took you shopping, treated you to boba and takeout, and then back at home, brought out his own expensive face masks and did your hair while you watched your favorite movies. As you got a little older, he sometimes let you have a sip of his whiskey sour, and coached you on different poker strategies after you told him it was your goal to win against Jeongguk. And thanks to Jin, one day you did.
âMaybe you two can start having girlsâ nights.â
âEw,â you and Jeongguk say at the same time, in the same inflection. Jin just rolls his eyes.
âCâmon, you canât just pretend you like each other in front of me?â
âWhy would we do that?â Jeongguk quips, earning him a death glare from you.
âYah, you little-â Jin scolds and lunges to give him a harmless swat but Jeongguk just jumps out of reach, already expecting it.
âCome here!â Tears drying, you laugh as Jin breaks away to chase him around, and it becomes their turn to wrestle, much to your delight seeing Jeongguk get put in a headlock for a change.
Eventually, Jeongguk taps Jinâs elbow, calling for a truce, and theyâre both slightly out of breath. You stare as they straighten and face each other, and something gentle floats down on them that has Jeongguk hugging him tightly. Jin starts rubbing his back and you duck your head when you hear him warble, âIâm sorry Iâve disappointed you, hyung.â
âHey, look at me,â Jin demands, pulling back to dip fingers under Jeonggukâs chin and lift his head up.Â
âThe only way you could disappoint me is if you run away or donât let yourself get better. Youâre here now, three months sober, and thatâs all that matters.â
âBut I-â Jin waves his free hand frantically in the air.
âI donât want to hear it! You just need to focus on tomorrow and every day ahead of that. The past is the past and youâll learn to let it go.â Jeongguk hangs his head again but Jin brings it right back up.
âI have the utmost confidence in you,â your oldest brother declares, setting firm yet comforting hands on Jeonggukâs cheeks. âI know itâs been hard, but youâve come so far. You are nothing like him, okay? Just stay off the stuff and everything will be fine.â
Jeongguk nods solemnly and Jin engulfs him again, whispering more affirmations that he needs to hear as he holds him.
âI believe in you, bun. Donât forget that.â
A few minutes pass of watching your brothersâ moment in the dark freezing cold, then Jin pulls back again, smoothing down Jeonggukâs bangs.
âLook out for her, will you?â Jin asks him, nodding back to you.
âDo I have to?â he jokingly complains, finally accepting the noogie to the top of his head. Jin laughs when Jeongguk pushes him away to fix his mussed hair and then looks past him at you.
âAnd you,â he calls. As you step forward, Jeongguk steps back, giving you and your oldest, dearest brother space.
âMy beautiful little sister,â Jin coos, brushing your cheek. âI am so incredibly proud of the woman youâve become. Iâve always admired how you stuck it out all these years, and even though you were building a life for yourself, you came back for us.â He smiles through a shaky breath.
âYou donât know how much that means to me. This business wonât be easy, but I know how strong and capable and resilient you are that youâll be able to handle it.â
âI got it from you.â A diamond drop plummets down his cheek.
âOh, birdie,â he murmurs, wrapping you up in the warmest bear hug. âIâm gonna miss you.â
âNo one couldâve raised us better than you, Jinnie,â you whisper into his neck, and he hugs you tighter. âBut Iâm sorry I snapped at you the other night.â
âItâs okay,â he says, smiling down at you softly as he adjusts your scarf to fit more snugly around the collar of your coat. âIt just showed me youâre not gonna take anyoneâs shit without a fight.â
âDuh, I grew up with Megatron over there.â
He chuckles, shoots a brief glance over your head and then pulls you a little closer, speaking a lot quieter.
âHe wonât be able to help you at the casino, so no one will be nice,â he reminds you seriously. âBut donât let any of them scare you. Give them hell, you hear me?âÂ
You nod your promise which eases his tense expression.
âLike I did with Kwang Dongwook? I heard youâve been bragging about me.â His frown flips into a grin, and he reaches up to adjust your beanie further down your forehead.
âOf course! Iâve always bragged about you. Not just when you stand up for yourself and your brother by stabbing a crazy drunk dude with a lit cigar. Cute little badass.â He pinches your cheek and you scowl, whacking him away.
âNo, but really,â he continues, raising his voice a bit. âYouâve always been a tough cookie, and not just because of that domesticated T-rex I raised.â
âIâm standing right here, yâknow!â Jeongguk hollers and you giggle when Jin acts like he didnât hear.
âAnd I know the situation with D isnât practical, little miss independent.â He boops your nose. Smile faltering, you do your best to keep disdain off of your face.
âBut I donât want anything to happen to you and I trust him the most to keep you safe. So if you have a problem with anyone, go to him and heâll deal with it, okay?â
You canât doubt or question your brother. And that means you have to trust D. (But the last time you did that, you woke up alone with some of your money gone. You remind yourself that this is D. Not Yoongi. Min Yoongi is dead to you.)
âI shouldnât have dropped that on you like I did, though, and Iâm sorry.â
You hum. âWeâre all throwing a lot of apologies around tonight. I think thatâs a record.â
âThat wonât be beaten again.â Your laughs harmonize in the frigid breeze.
âWhat are you guys laughing about?â Jeongguk asks as he walks up to join you.
âHow funny your face looks,â you crack, causing Jeongguk to plop his hand on the center of your face, tipping your head back as you let out a muffled cackle.
Before you can start another squabble, Jin tugs you both into him in a family hug, one that you and Jeongguk have always pretended to complain about but give up your childish tendencies for the sake of the moment. Who knows when youâll get to hug Jin like this again.
âYou two are my entire world. Take care of each other for me, okay? I love you so much.â
A horn blows loudly over the water - a signal that time is up.
âFuck,â he whispers. Jin isnât one to curse. âI have to go.â Many tears slip between the three of you and he squeezes you before letting go. âHelp me with my bags?â
You and Jeongguk each pick up one and carry them to the dock where a man wordlessly takes them on deck of the large, old fishing boat. Jin turns to you once again, lingers kisses on your foreheads, envelopes you in one last firm hug, and you cling onto each other like thatâll keep Jin rooted in place so he can never leave.
âIf either of you get hurt, Iâll burn this entire fucking city down.â
And then he lets go.
Jeongguk throws an arm around your neck as you watch your brother board the boat that will take him too far away, both of you laughing when he turns around once he reaches the deck and dramatically blows a kiss in your direction.
Head plopped on Jeonggukâs bicep, you stare and stare as Jin bustles around, helping the crew launch off the dock. Once the boat starts drifting away, Jin rushes to the stern, standing there with his arm held up in an endless wave that you and Jeongguk return with a variation of hearts.
Neither of you moves from the edge until the boat becomes nothing but a dot of light on the dark sea.
The ride home is quiet, except for sniffles and swiping of tears from cheeks. When the SUV pulls back up to your house and D gets out to open your door, Jeongguk hugs you, holding on for longer than you expect.
âI couldnât do this without you,â he whispers with an undertone of sincerity. But you catch fear in there too.
âI know,â you whisper back, smiling at his small huff as he pulls back. âBut you got this, bro. Like Jin said.â
He smiles when you hold out your fist and you do the brief version of your handshake. Just a gentler tap on the side of the neck and finger guns.
âNight.â
âNight,â he murmurs as you grab the handle but the door opens for you.
You donât give D the same farewell as you get out of the car. Neither does he as he shuts the door behind you.
The sky is grey with heavy flakes of snow as you step out onto the porch. D is standing by the car like he did the first night he picked you up. Hands clasped, glasses and long coat on. Except this time, heâs waiting by the back door.
âGood afternoon, Miss Jeon,â he greets as he opens the door before tipping forward in a subtle bow. Your only reply is a cursory glance his way.
D drives you into the city, and youâre relieved when Jeongguk texts you because it distills some of the anxiety unfurling in your pores.
Megatronđ¤: Kick ass today
You: Gotta practice so I can kick yours on friday!
Megatronđ¤:đ yeah good luck with that
You grin at your brotherâs sarcasm and find a gif of Rocky boxing, pleased with the fact that the theme song will be stuck in his head all day because of it. The middle finger emoji he shoots back confirms your theory.
Stay Gold casino isnât massive like your brother said. Itâs colossal. Foreboding. As you stare up at it in all its glory and lights and noise and glamorous patrons, you feel as if at any moment it could collapse and crush you to pieces.
âAh, my future daughter-in-law, welcome!â A booming voice startles you out of your slow descent into unmanageable stress, belonging to Jay's father as he stands at the top of the stairs, Namjoon beside him wearing a comforting smile.
âI was expecting you a bit sooner.â You pause in the midst of taking a step into his handshake.
âAm I not on time?â
âYou are, but since itâs your first day, I thought you might show some initiative and arrive earlier. You know, make a good impression.â He says this in a sincere tone, but his smile is anything but.
You havenât even set one foot inside the building, but already youâve messed up? You just fucking got here, why is he being so hard on you? You glance over at Namjoon whoâs staring at Jayâs father with a small frown and slightly quirked brow.
âShe had another appointment prior to this, so she wouldnât have been able to come any earlier,â Namjoon announces evenly. You say nothing as he lies since youâd only been at home staring at the wall for a few hours.
The older man turns to Namjoon. âOh, have you been brought on as the assistant?â
âNo, sir,â your savior politely shakes his head. âIâm here to help until she finds one, so you can come to me about any issues with her schedule.â
âAh,â is all Namjoon gets in response before youâre gestured to enter the place that will one day be under your name. Well, the name youâll be claimed by.
Jayâs father takes you to your office first, all of you squeezing into the employee elevator with D situated himself in the corner behind you. The doors rumble open on the fourth floor, and itâs only one turn around a short corner before a large oak door comes into view with a small desk sitting to the right of it.
âThe main office is up a few floors, but thatâs mine. Youâll use this one for now.â
Itâs small, to say the least. And the wood panelling looks as if you time traveled back into the â80s. The entire room even smells as if the carpet hasnât been cleaned since then, embedded with the stench of stale cigars.
The one redeeming quality is that behind the desk is a glass opening in the floor that allows you to peer over the blackjack and roulette tables, all the money that passes from the hands of tourists and locals with nothing to lose, that will end up in the casinoâs safes and your brotherâs pockets.
The tour continues all around the casino, Jayâs father showing you every room on every floor like this is your one and only chance to get familiar with the environment. From here on out, youâll be here pretty much every day of the week, so you donât know why heâs rushing through this tour on your first night.Â
Itâs almost hard to keep up. And you feel bad for Namjoon whoâs matching the pace alongside you, diligently taking notes as your FFIL rattles off all of your potential duties. All of which Namjoon has briefed you on already.
Itâs a lot to absorb.
Monitoring games and slots and the revenue that follows. Overseeing the floor at the beginning of the night. Engaging with important guests and board members.
Youâre introduced to managers, dealers, and various members of the staff, and despite the polite greetings you give them, followed by promises that youâll work hard alongside them, they eye you with uncertainty.
Doubt creeps in.
As he guides you through more slot games on the other side of the casino, a presence suddenly steps up between you and Namjoon, forcing the latter to move aside, and your heart sinks when you turn to Jay beaming at you, his hand lightly brushing the small of your back.
âOh, what are you doing here?â you ask, recovering a stutter. He leans in to kiss you on the cheek, and tamping down nausea, you feign a smile and remind yourself that this is just for show.
âI came to support you on your first day. Howâs it going so far?â
âShe still has a lot to learn,â his father answers for you. Jay just nods and smiles at you, clearly not detecting the condescension.
âSheâll get the hang of it.â
Jay never leaves your side as his father goes on with the tour, fingers lightly but noticeably touching over the small of your back, the center of your shoulders, your elbow, and itâs the most heâs touched you thus far. Itâs just like the kiss. Heâs showing people (and you) that heâs the reason for the heavy rock on your ring finger. Heâs claiming you. And it makes your nerves bristle.
His father goes on to tell you about the private gambling rooms, but doesn't take you in.
âIâm not expecting you to know how to gamble or play poker, but it might be a good idea to at least get familiar with the games.â
Namjoon leans forward, opening his mouth to no doubt inform him of your acute abilities, but you shake your head, quietly stopping him.
âThatâs a good idea, Iâll get right on that.â Itâs hard to keep the sarcasm out of your voice, but Jayâs father doesnât seem to notice as heâs too busy smugly leering at you.
âI can teach you,â Jay says close to your ear. Next to him, Namjoon is side-eyeing the interaction like he just ate something sour and it helps to put a tight-lipped smile on your face as you give your fiancĂŠ a confirming nod.
Continuing on, you glance back to Namjoon cracking his neck and subtly shaking his head, and you have to press your lips together to contain a laugh.
âAsk about the counters,â Namjoon then reminds you in a whisper. Crossing your arms, you face your patronizing supervisor.
âI want to meet the counters.â
âAh, thatâs not something you have to worry about.â
âThatâs exactly what I have to worry about,â you state firmly. âI want to know whoâs counting my money.â
âYour money?â He scoffs. âI know my son put that pretty ring onÂ
your finger, but Iâm afraid that until you tie the knot, nothing in here is yours.â
âI think my brothers would disagree.â
âThe alliance isnât secure yet, young lady. This is a trial run, remember?â You take a deep breath, calming your building rage, and speak as evenly as you can.
âIâm here to take care of my brotherâs side of the business, and the counters are part of that. Take me to them now.â
He shares a silent exchange with his son and you sense that they will have some words about you later and they wonât be upholding. In a reluctant spin, he takes you back the way you came and you ask Namjoon a random question about his notes so Jay canât comment on how you just spoke to his father.
He leads you to a stairwell on the west side and you skid to a stop, stomach dropping.
The stairwell. You donât know which one it was, so you want to avoid any of them at all cost. You jut a thumb over your shoulder.
âIâm gonna take the elevator.â Jay and his father look at you questioningly. Namjoon bows his head, hiding his minute frown.
âBut itâs just one flight down.â
You shake your head, wearing a discomfited smile. âIâll meet you there.â
Not giving either of them a chance to argue further, you turn for the elevator. And for one brief second, youâre relieved that the only person following you is D. Because he wonât say a word or ask a question, which is the last thing you need in this moment.
The three men are waiting in the hall once you exit the elevator, Jay and his father whipping themselves out of a whispered conversation once your heels click on the floor.
The room they bring you to is small and brightly lit, with 5 men in white button-downs sorting through lockboxes of money, counting it, exchanging it with bills from silver briefcases, and placing them in drawers that slide into a large safe on wheels for transport.
This is where the cash from the businesses protected by your brother will be laundered, that youâre in charge of collecting. The cash that will make you complicit in the Crow family crime syndicate.
Nausea lays down with the doubt. Still, you press forward.
On your way to where the vaults are that Jayâs father seems reluctant to show you, you pass by a room where staff donning red blazer, black ties, and wires behind their ears are filtering in and out. Your fianceâs father doesnât apologize to a staff member he bumps into as he pauses and turns around, looking past you, Jay, and Namjoon.
âD, is it?â Stilling, you glance back to D whoâs focused on Jayâs father through those dark glasses as he nods. âYouâll be in charge of the security team?â
âI already am, sir.â
âExcuse me?â
âThey all know that they will report to me.â
The older man looks appalled and, frankly, so are you. Dâs apparently twelve steps ahead of you, having already established himself and his role here as the chief of security.
âAlright,â Jay says, sitting his hand on your waist and you force your muscles not to tense too much. âIâm gonna get going, so Iâll see you at home.â He places another kiss on your cheek and Namjoon looks away, but behind you, thereâs a pair of hidden eyes on your back that wonât leave.
Once Jayâs father gives you room to breathe by escorting his son to the garage, Namjoon joins you and D in returning to your office, phone out texting who you assume to be his girlfriend as he walks.
âDid they talk shit about me?â you disrupt the somewhat comfortable silence.
âNo,â he shakes his head without breaking attention from his phone. Man can multitask. âIâm sure they wouldâve if I wasnât there.â
You hum, a bitter taste in your mouth, and Namjoon shuts his phone off and pockets it.
âBut donât pay him any mind, youâre doing fine. I would call him a name, but heâs about to be your father-in-law.â
âI want to call him a few names,â you mumble, and Namjoon lets out a comforting laugh. This is a reason why you think you could get through everything with Namjoon by your side. Heâs so easygoing and real with the ability to make you feel better through his playful nature. But this is only temporary because his actual role is to take care of your brotherâs affairs. Youâll just be stuck with D and whatever assistant he finds.
âWhy didnât you tell them you can play poker?â he asks after you step into the elevator and D presses the button for the 3rd floor.
You shrug. âThey want to keep underestimating me, who am I to stop them?â
âSo youâre gonna act like you donât know how to play and then completely wipe the floor with their asses?â
Grinning, you flicker an impulsive glance at your bodyguard, whoâs standing so still he could be a wax figurine.
âIâve done it before, itâs really fun.âÂ
âCan I please be there? Iâd love to see that.â
âYeah, Iâll pencil it into your schedule.â
âSweet!â
Back in your office, Namjoon follows you inside while D stays in the hall, next to the door as you shut it. His phone is back out as you sit down at the desk, inspecting the worn corners and stained surface with repulsion.
âSo, Megâs on her way to pick me up, are you good?â
âYeah, I think so,â you nod, lugging your bag onto the desk so you can start organizing your books and papers. âHot date tonight?â
âAlways.â He winks, and you laugh at his cheesy grin.
âAlright, well, seriously, youâre doing great so far and I think youâre going to continue to do great.â
âMoon, all Iâve done is walk around and shake hands.â
âAnd put up with his condescending attitude!â Namjoon exclaims, dramatically throwing up an arm. âYou showed him youâre not here to play games and that youâre capable of everything heâs going to expect out of you. Thatâs a damn good start.â
âThank you, Moon.â
âYouâre welcome,â he says in a huff, like he thinks you shouldâve already known that. You chuckle at his expression as you get out your laptop.
âAnd just by the way, D was watching that dude Jay like a hawk because he kept touching up on you.â
Your fingers freeze over the keyboard, and Namjoon misses the way you thickly swallow as he checks a message on his phone.
âSo if he ever tries anything fresh, D will, yâknow, deal with him.â
You clasp your cold hands. âI know. Thatâs his job.âÂ
âYeah, no one will get in your way with him around. Your brothers made a good choice in him.â
So youâve gathered. If only they knew.
âYou know what, speaking of D, I was looking through the files again and I didnât see one for him.â
Namjoon glances up to the ceiling in thought.
âI donât think there is one since he was vetted by your brothers.â
âIâm his boss now and Iâd like to see his background.â
âI think I can come up with something.â
âOkay, thanks.â
âNo problem, Iâll have it ready later this week. By the way, any word on your assistant?â
âNot yet,â you sigh. âI guess Dâs having a little trouble finding one whoâs not a guy.â
Namjoon nods. âWell, in the meantime, Iâm happy to help out.â
âI appreciate it. Actually, there was something elseâŚâÂ
You dig through the mess in your bag until you find your black journal that has names of businesses and their owners within the city, monetary numbers and dates lined next to them. You flip to the page you marked because some of the information is unclear.
âI noticed this clinic up north is on the books, but thereâs no payment expected?â
Namjoon looks it over and nods. âI think your family owes them a favor, so they donât have to pay for protection.â
Huh. Interesting.
He pulls out his phone as you search through the rest of the book for any other notes you made to mention to Namjoon. But he announces that his girlfriend just pulled up.
âThanks for your help tonight. Tell Meg I said hi!â He beams at you and waves as he heads for the door.
âWill do, boss. See you tomorrow!â
The rest of the week consists of your future father-in-law micromanaging you, hotly breathing down your neck as you get yourself familiar with the inner-workings of the casino.
When you finally get some of your own furniture moved into your âofficeâ (you couldnât stand that tired ass couch and scratched up, cigarette burned desk!) Jay's father laughed off your request to get a drawing desk in there so you can work on some renovation ideas.
âI think you should hold off on doing your little designs until I feel that youâre ready to oversee things without my supervision.â
Despite that, you make tons of mental notes of all the places you find need improvement. The casino carpets will be the first to go. Theyâre purposely designed to be ugly - a psychological trick to keep eyes on the tables - but the one youâre walking over now is far too outdated and gaudy for your tastes.
The tacky red uniforms that staff and security wear will be next, and because the majority of clientele that the casino attracts are men, you think youâll make the outfits the waitresses and female bartenders wear a little less revealing.
Youâre not looking forward to finding out how much of a fight Jayâs father will put up against that. You have a feeling that heâs going to be very resistant to your ideas, stubborn brute that he is. Oh well. You can be just as stubborn, if not more, and you promised Jin you would give them hell.
You will make your mark around here, whether they like it or not.
Starting with those ugly ass carpets.
Towards the final stretch of your hours on Thursday night, Namjoon meets you in your office where youâre on your laptop reviewing the companyâs budget and making calculations for the upcoming monthly report (per the request of Jayâs father), he places a manila folder on the edge of your desk.
âDâs record,â he tells you quietly, even though the man in question is on the other side of the door. You flip open the folder, bracing yourself.
Thereâs no picture, just one sheet of paper outlining his skills and qualifications for the job, and at the very bottom is a line that reads:
Spent 3 years in Seoul Detention Center.
Crime: Miscellaneous charges
ââMiscellaneousâ is kind of vague.â
âI know. Heâs pretty secretive-â Namjoon continues. Yeah, no shit. âAnd Atlas is the one in charge of background checks, so thatâs all there is. If you want more details, I think youâd have to ask D.â
Like hell.
All you know is his full name, birthday, and blood type. And that was only because you had the fleeting chance to look at his dog tags. Are your brothers privy to that? Namjoon clearly isnât, and he knows Jin and Jeongguk almost better than they know themselves.
âThanks for putting this together,â you say, hiding the folder in a drawer.
âNo problem. If you want, I can talk to D for you.â
You wave at him dismissively. If anyoneâs going to have that conversation, itâs going to be you.
Friday is when you wake up to a text from Namjoon saying Hope wants to meet up for a quick chat and itâs honestly a breath of relief, but youâre not really sure why. Youâre not too hyped in meeting with another one of your brotherâs men so he can check up on you, making you feel like he believes you canât handle yourself. But maybe Hope will be like Namjoon. You could use more of that.
You relay the information to D, and he drives you to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant uptown. Since youâre working out with your brother, Namjoon scheduled you for a later shift, so you meet Hope just after lunch, the customers scarce and scattered. He's already there sitting in a booth, a half-eaten plate in front of him, and as you pass D holding open the door, the bell ringing overhead, he says lowly,
âSit in the booth next to him so youâre back-to-back.â
âAnd youâll be at the counter?â Because he better not sit across from you.
Hope lifts his phone to his ear once you casually slip into the booth, and as you pretend to look over the menu while D sits on a barstool across from you at the counter, he begins talking to you as if answering a call.
âHowâs your first week been?â
Kind. His voice is kind and it eases you. You sit back against your chair, exhaling a bit of stress.
âIt went as well as it couldâve, I guess,â you reply neutrally. Youâre not about to turn this into a therapy session. âBut I donât have anything to report. This feels like a waste of your time.â
âNot at all. Iâm happy to hear any updates; good or bad. Well, hopefully less of the bad.â
âYeah, weâll see.â
A lapse in conversation occurs as the server comes over to take your order of a drip coffee to go, giving you time to mull over how you want to word the question youâve been debating these past few days.
âI know you work for my brothers, but I was wondering-â
He gently interrupts you. âI work for you too.â You need to get used to that.
âThis might be a long shot butâŚâ you nervously pick at your cuticles. âI wanted to look for my mother. Do you think you can help me?â
âIâll do what I can.â His soft tone indicates that he means it. He really lives up to his name.
âI appreciate it.â
As the server sets down your coffee and you exchange it for cash from your clutch, you spare a glance over your shoulder to see Hope dig out a notepad and pen from his briefcase.
âIs there anything you can tell me about her?â
âUm, all I know is her name and that she used to own a coffee shop downtown. I donât know which one though.â
He nods as he scribbles some notes.
âAnd she left when I was two,â you say quietly. Pained. âThatâs it.â
âI canât promise you anything, but Iâll do my best.â
âOkay. I really appreciate that but, um, could you please not tell my brother about this?â
âOf course, Miss Jeon.â
You smile. âAngel is fine.â
âIs there anything else?â
âNo, but I wanted to thank you for all youâve done to help us. Especially my brother, I know he cares a lot for you. I hope you two got to say goodbye.â
He stays silent as you slip out of the booth, grabbing your coffee along the way. But when you pass him, the tips of his ears are extremely red, and you have to suppress a smile as you exit, D not too far behind.
You: Omw to beat your ass!!
Megatronđ¤: Don't bet on it! You're toast
By the time you stride into the gym, D in tow, your brother is already there, warming up with a trainer in the ring. You call his name and he takes a few seconds to pull himself out of the zone, doe eyes lighting up upon seeing you.
He dismisses the trainer and walks over to the side where youâre standing, leaning on the ropes with a smile, panting heavily, bangs stringy with sweat.
âBout time you showed up,â he says, catching the water bottle a gym attendant throws from below. âWhy arenât you changed?â
Rolling your eyes, you lift up your small duffle that carries your workout clothes.
âI just came from a meeting. Yâknow, work?â
He raises his eyebrows in acknowledgment, taking a long swig of water before dropping the bottle with a satisfied gasp, and turns his attention to the man you wish wasnât standing behind you.
ââSup, D. You gonna box me in your suit?â
âI could, and look cool as fuck knocking your ass out.â Jeongguk laughs and your eyes twitch as you try not to join him.
âAlright, Iâm gonna hit the treadmill. Am I allowed to work out by myself? Or does D have to supervise that too?â you ask your brother in a slightly sarcastic tone, ignoring Dâs side eye.
âYouâre fine. Just stay in the room next door.â It takes a lot not to childishly mock him as you hoist your bag on your shoulder.
You turn around to where Dâs removing his coat, revealing a glimpse of his holster. Something puts an uneasy whirlpool in your gut, forcing you to look away. You know itâs a necessity for the guards to have guns on their person at all times, yet you canât help feeling uncomfortable.
âOh, it needs to be cleared before you go in there,â Jeongguk says before you can start to walk away. You lock eyes with D for a second as you realize that he is, yet again, going to follow you.
The equipment room is occupied by 7 or so men who immediately drop what theyâre doing and scurry to exit into another part of the building when D bellows in that dark, gruff voice, âEveryone out!â
The AC is what sends a shiver down your spine.
Once theyâre all out and D locks the door behind them, he turns to tell you in a much quieter tone, âIâll be right here.â
âDonât care,â you mutter, promptly turning away to head for the empty womenâs shower room, positive that youâre the first one to use it. His eyes stay on your back until you disappear.
Every movement of yours echoes in the empty bathroom, including the plunk of your bag on a wooden bench that stands in front of a wall of lockers.Â
The tote with his sweater and chain sits stuffed in the bottom of your duffle. Staring at it for a moment, pensively, you consider how you should return it to him. You refuse to hand it over directly because you canât predict what his reaction will be and that scares you.
You have to be sneaky. But how can you do that with a man who can show up and disappear and not make a sound?
When you come back to the ring, you falter in your tracks upon catching the sight of your brother sparring with D whoâs dressed down to a white tee, black joggers, and a grey baseball cap on backwards.
But the casual outfit isnât what makes you stiffen.
Itâs the light dancing over his face. The light that comes from a hint of a smile as he throws punches with Jeongguk, ducking and dodging and returning every one of his swings.
They havenât stopped moving since you re-entered, so you take the opportunity to set your duffle next to Dâs, and as long as Jeonggukâs back is to you, coolly transfer the tote from your bag into his, zipping it up as if nothing happened. You perch on the end of the bench and check your phone. Other than an email from Namjoon about tonightâs itinerary, your messages are dry as hell. You scroll on social media, watching stupid videos to distract you from the fact that you miss your friends and you canât do anything about it.
âHey, you want a turn?â Jeongguk pants after 10 minutes or so. You smile, leaving your phone on top of your bag, and stand.
âYeah, Iâve been looking forward to beating you up all week.â
âWell, then you shouldâve come earlier. Iâm past my limit.â
He does look exhausted; meanwhile, D looks as if heâs barely broken a sweat.
âYou just donât want your boys to see you take hits from your little sister.â He rolls his eyes but doesnât deny it.
âJust work with D, I need to sit down for a sec.â
A heavy feeling in your stomach sinks all the way down to your feet, rooting you to the floor as you fight not to show how very much not okay you are with that.
The universe must really be out to get you.
You glance involuntarily over to D standing in the middle of the ring, staring down at the floor with gloved hands on his hips.
âGo on,â Jeongguk goads, holding up the ropes for you to step under and into the ring.
âSounds like youâre getting old, bro,â you casually comment as you pass him. He lands a punch on your shoulder and you grin devilishly.
âDonât go easy on her just âcuz sheâs a girl, D,â Jeongguk calls over his shoulder as he steps down on the floor, cackling when you flinch at him with your glove.
Your heart is running a damn marathon as you turn and face the man whose eyes are now locked on you, all that light he had in them with your brother completely fizzled out. Just blank.Â
Soulless.
What will it take to bring anything palpable in his eyes when he looks at you? Youâll be damned if you donât try and find out.
âYeah, donât go easy on me, D,â you say mockingly as you turn back to him, gloves held up shielding your mouth from everyone but the sinister man in front of you.
âI can take it.â Tilting your head, you bat your eyelashes, hoping to incite something out of his blank expression. âYou should know that.â
But thereâs nothing. Not even darkness appears. It doesnât phase him. So you lunge forward with a retaliating, vengeful punch but his gloves raise in a split second to block.
Every strike, every punch translates into the anger, betrayal, fucking heartbreak this man left you with 3 years ago. And now heâs doing it all over again by acting like he has goddamn amnesia. You hope he can tell you want to do so much more than throw hits at him with some boxing gloves. But he doesnât let you back him into a corner. He moves like he did with your brother, just without the smile. Without the light. And it makes your hatred for him fester and spread like a poison.
The poison pricks tears to the corners of your eyes. You drop your gloves and pull yourself out of your self-inflicted torment, twisting around with a raise of your arm to feign dabbing sweat from your forehead so they canât see the tears clouding your vision.
Fuck, you have to stop!
Tears are a weakness. You canât be weak. Donât let him make you weak.
âDamn, sis,â your brother exclaims as he stands to approach the ring, grabbing your bottle of water from the bench. âTough week, huh?â
Your labored breathing prevents you from answering, so you opt to lift your eyebrows and nod as you catch the bottle he tosses you. Tilting your head up to drink and will the tears away, Jeongguk leans against the ropes and starts rattling out pointers, mainly focusing on your footwork.
But youâre not in the mood to refine your technique. You just shake your head and move to climb out of the ring.
âWait, didnât you wanna-â
âNah, Iâm done,â you say as you grab your phone and bag again. âI should probably get going anyway.â
Jeonggukâs confused gaze follows as you head back out towards the bathroom. The shower camouflages the tears you canât fight off, and if your brother asks, the steam is what made your eyes red. The heat on your skin and under it turns your anguish into anger.
Now dressed for work, your throat tightens as you pass by D in the doorway to return to the ring, and you try to relax because your brother is watching and you donât want him to be concerned about your abrupt departure.
When you glance back, D is nowhere in sight. As if he wasnât there at all.
âI thought you wanted to beat my ass,â Jeongguk says in a playful tone as he walks up to you.
âI do, but I didnât realize how old youâre getting and it wouldnât be fair to beat up on the elderly- Jeongguk, stop! I just showered!â You shriek and hold up your hands as he lunges for you with sweaty biceps and a soaked tee.
Instead of ignoring your plea and head-locking you anyway, he angles you with narrowed eyes and you realize your mistake.
âI mean Sol. Sorry.â
He waves you off just like Jin did the other night and sits down on the bench, elbows on his knees as he unwraps the white protective fabric around his knuckles.
âBefore you go, I want to tell you about this diamond trader youâre gonna have to meet with in the next couple of weeks.â
âWhy me?â
âBecause heâs in your vicinity, and he and I donât exactly get along.â
âYou donât get along with anybody.â
âShut up.â You shrug because did you lie?
âAnyway, heâs at that club âHalaziaâ downtown and he goes by Captain. D will set everything up.â
You cross your arms as the prospect of this new responsibility puts another weight on your shoulders. Jeongguk seems to notice this because his manner towards you softens.
âThisâll be a good way to assert yourself, yâknow? Show him whoâs boss.â
âIsnât that you?â Your eyebrow lifts as he shakes his head.
âYouâre in charge in this case, sis. And if he has trouble accepting it, Dâs there to back you up.â
As if on cue, D strides back in wearing the suit he had on before, glasses shielding his eyes.
âYou think I need him to be taken seriously?â D slows to a stop upon approach but you donât look his way.
âYou need him to make sure people respect you because they wonât at first. You know that.â
Then why hasnât he said a damn thing to Jayâs father this entire week? Will he only act if you prompt him to? How far will he let things go before stepping in? A bull-headed part of you wants to put that to the test.
You sigh. âFine. Can I go now?â
âIt was nice seeing you, sis,â he says sarcastically since youâre annoyed.
âWhatever,â you wave at him, swinging on your coat. âBye. You stink by the way.â Jeonggukâs laugh rings in the gym as you make a beeline for the exit.
âSee ya, D,â is the last thing you hear from your brother before you hastily open the door, not bothering to hold it for your guard.
Snow is falling again when you make it outside. D handed the car off to a valet earlier and now you have to wait on the curb with him standing next to you.
âStill smoke?â you blurt because you could really use some fucking nicotine. He nods shortly and, without facing him, you hold out your hand. âI know I owe you a cigarette, but I think my 500,000 won you took shouldâve covered that, right?â
He briefly hesitates before reaching into the inside of his breast pocket, pulling out a lighter and a carton. Flicking open the top, the box reveals only one cigarette.
âLast one again, huh?â You observe, pulling out the final stick. "Oh, but you owe me for some plan b, so maybe that cancels it all out.â
Staring out at the white dusting the sidewalk across the street, you prop your elbow on your wrist and let your fingers holding the cigarette tip in his direction. Youâve counted a total of 17 steadily falling snowflakes when the lighter clicks and a flame pricks your periphery to emblaze the end of your cigarette.
He drops the lighter and you take a drag, blowing smoke up into the darkening, snowy sky.
âWhat were you in prison for?â you finally ponder aloud the question thatâs been buzzing in your mind since Namjoon handed you that folder. âI looked at your file, and it said you were there for 3 years.â He doesnât reply. You huff out air that mimics the white wisps of smoke.
âI mean, since youâre working for me, I deserve to know. And donât lie to me, Iâve had enough of that.â
Still not a word. You turn to him again, tilting your head because you really want a fucking answer.
âWas it for stealing?â
Several beats pass before he finally, darkly, mutters, âMurder.â
Your breath freezes in your lungs. So. You didnât just fuck a convicted felon. You fucked a murderer.
That doesnât scare you like it should.
âHowâd you do it?â you find yourself asking out of morbid curiosity.
If you thought there was a wall around him beforeâŚ
âHow, D?â Your voice raises on the emphasis.
âI stabbed him.â
âWhat, with chopsticks? Is that your go-to method? Kinda sloppy, isnât it?â
He doesnât answer your questions as if theyâre rhetorical. The Elantra inches closer, and with a final drag, you drop the cigarette and dig it into the snowy curb with your heel. The valet steps out and passes D the keys, and you donât wait for him to open the door but his hand on the side and the entrenchment of his cologne suspends you from getting in.
âY'know, I could have you killed. And my hands would be clean. No one would bat an eye."
Even if you canât see his eyes, from the way your skin is thrumming, you know heâs staring right through you from behind those glasses.
âYouâre lucky you mean something to my brother.â
You keep your eyes locked on his shades for a beat so your words sink into whatever hard shell of his. And then you get in the car, slamming the door shut and pulling out your phone as if you didnât just threaten his life.
For the entire night, you act as if he is nothing but a shadow.
You donât get home until 2 in the morning, and as you unpack your gym duffle to do laundry (because if you donât do it now, it wonât get done), you find a finely rolled wad of new, crisp bills tucked under your gym clothes.
500,000 won.
Bastard. Itâs too late for that.

thank you for reading!! i hope you enjoyed! any comments/feedback are much appreciated!!!
Hey, since your requests are open, I was wondering if youâd consider writing an enemies-to-lovers story for Aoânung. But the âenemiesâ part is completely one-sided. Aoânung is mean to her because he likes her and doesnât know how to handle his crush, and she dislikes him because heâs mean to her. Heâs always wherever she is, and she runs from him like heâs the plague â and he doesnât understand why she runs from him.
Maybe his parents could advise him on how to better deal with his crush and how to actually charm her, with him trying and eventually succeeding. Please, I need Aoânung to be clueless lol. You can add a bit of smut too, if youâre up for it.
I just love your writing! You always give me what Iâm craving
Skxawng apxa
Stupid boy
A/N: I hope I pulled this off to your expectations
Summary: Ao'nung is a skxawng, and heâs in love. He doesnât know how to navigate his feelings and instead of acknowledging them, he acts like an ass. Every time he tries to find you, you either make an excuse to leave or just leave. And heâs growing tired of the chaseâif only he had the ability to take his head out of his ass, heâd understand heâs the reason why you run
Warnings: use of y/n, Aoânung is a bit of an ass, fluff & smut, oral female receiving

âThatâs a pathetic looking fish. You were out for hours and thatâs all you caught? That could hardly feed yourself.â
He speaks before his brain can catch up to his tongue. He opens his mouth and the words spill out from him with little hesitation. By the time he actually processes what he says, he is faced with the visible reality of your anger.
Your beautiful light eyes narrow, and your nostrils begin to flare with every sharp inhale and calming exhale you make. Your three fingers curl around the deboning knife that youâd been using to prepare your fish, and your tail heavily pounds the sand behind you. He is already scrambling mentally to chide his tongue when you rise to your feet and in an act of contempt, toss the knife into the fish.
You turn away from him with a sharpness, the tip of your tail practically vibrating with the acute irritation he has sparked in you. Aoânung is watching you go, watching you walk away while your fish that you caught, singular, sits on the pier close to the ilu pen.
âWas it something I said, sevin?â He canât prevent himself from calling out after you, he raises his voice and taunts youâand you respond hastily by whipping your head around and shooting him a glare.
An adorable, intoxicating, glare that has Aoânung grinning like a damn fool on the platform. In the middle of the day, in the midst of the sun that beats down on Awaâatlu, Aoânung has once again irritated the tutè he has a crush onâthe woman he cannot stop thinking of.
Itâs almost vexing to him, really. You are consistently there, lingering in his thoughts like a shadow he canât shake off. In the morning he thinks of you, of how your face would look scrunched up in the glow of the light as you fight getting up. Or at dusk when your cute little freckles begin to illuminate and glow.
And the soundsâŚthe sounds you unknowingly make when you are trying to fix your tewngs, your loincloths that always seem to snag on rocks, it drives him crazy.
Aoânung physically cannot manage the way his body seems to buzz and come alive whenever you are near him. And because he canât manage the crush, the swiftly developing feelings he has for the Metkayina girl who plagues every through, he chooses to be an ass. Although it feels like itâs less of a choice and more of a natural reaction from the disconnect in his mind and his tongue.
Aoânung canât help himself. Teasing you comes naturally, it comes easily, although it places him in a category that he fears he will never be able to get out ofâespecially considering that anytime he comes around you make an excuse to leave.
Or you just leave. Like now, with your fish abandoned and your knife imbedded in its body, you leave him behind to look after you with a wickedly dumb grin on his face. He stands on the pier staring in the direction you had disappeared in, the tips of his fingers twitching against his sides in tandem with his ears. He can hear the business of the village, the scattered conversations of the clan that go about their everyday lives.
And somewhere in the confines of Awaâatlu, you will hear hiding out avoiding him.
âThe least I could do is return her fish.â Aoânungâs crouches to the platform and yanks the knife out of your caught fish, only half-deboned, and then takes both of them in one hand. With you completely disappearing in the village somewhere he takes your fish and knife and starts heading back to his familyâs marui.
He is only feet in front of his home, already comforted by the familiar markings etched into the thick corded pillars that supported the roof and entrance. From behind the leather privacy flap, just as decorated and designed as the etches in the wood pillars, he could hear his parents talking.
The tips of his ears twitched subtly when he had detected the sound of his motherâs soft singing to Pril and his fatherâs deep voice as he spoke to Tsireya. Aoânung had approached the entrance and lifted the privacy flap with the back of his hand, getting a clearer look at his home.
His mother, like he expected, was sitting near the fire with Pril in her lap allowing their mother to braid her curls. Pril, like his mother, wore the same style of clothing made from bleached reeds stretched and woven into delicate thread. His motherâs voice echoed in the marui as she sang to Pril, her voice carrying words that he remembered from his childhood.
His father was near the hammocks with Tsireya, the designated sleeping area for their family was laden with different items. Some weapons he and his father had, pillows and blankets, toys for Pril, baskets of herbs for his mother, and Tsireyaâs courting gifts from Loâak. Aoânung had listened to the tail end of the conversation between his father and Tsireya, which had swiftly ended when he entered the home.
âMa tsmukan what is that?â Prilâs nose scrunched when she looked at the dead fish in Aoânung hand that still had your knife sticking out of it. âA fish?â
Aoânung glimpsed at the fish in his hand, half-gutted and prepped, that he had carried all the way from the pier. The fish was on the smaller size although for you it would have been sufficient enough for you to eat. Aoânung knew he was being an ass when he was giving you a hard time about the stupid fish but it was easy to tease you.
âWhy do you have a fish, tsmukan?â Tsireya had joined in on the conversation, turning away from their dad to be more directly involved. Like Pril, her nose scrunched and she looks at the fish with a look of distaste.
âTook it from a little Eylan of mine.â He shrugs and removes the knife from the side before he tosses the fish into the fire. When it lands in the ash and the scales begin to crackle in the flames, Aoânungâs lips form a frown. âWho avoids me like Iâm diseased.â
âY/N you mean?â Tsireya asks while she touches the bracelet Loâak gave her, fingers running along the beading. âYou tease her a lot, Aoânung.â
âSevin suylangâŚâ he trails off, speaking of you with a voice that edges on the line of neediness transcending simple desire. He spoke of you like he needed you to live, to breathe. âPretty petal, she isâŚ. everything. But she avoids me like Iâm some rabid akula.â
âMa âitan,â his father raised his voice, drawing Aoânungâs attention from where it was fixated on the fish burning in the fire, âyour tsmuke tells us that you have beenâŚtaunting her.â
âTeasing.â Aoânung corrects, attention flitting between his dad and Tsireya. âI tease her because I like her reactions but whenever I show up, she goes running.â
âShe hates you because you are mean.â Pril quips from their motherâs lap, squirming when their mom takes another section of hair to braid. âMaybe she wouldnât run away from you if you were nicer.â
Silence falls over the marui as Aoânung remunerates about his feelings for the girl who keeps running from him. He didnât know how to manage his crush, that much was obvious, and thatâs why he was so keen on teasing you. He didnât exactly know how to navigate feelings for someone like you, someone who wasnât blatantly head over heels for him like some of the other girls in the clan were.
Aoânung had a pretty face, he was the eldest son of the Oloâeyktan, and that had awarded him with a group of girls who fantasized about being his mate. He could have had his choice of any of them, and they would have never given him any pushback, but he wanted you.
He had desired the one who thought he was a walking, raging ego, who had been tired of Aoânungâs behaviour and avoided him at all costs. He wanted you, damn him did he ever want you. It was an inevitable, crushing, debilitating kind of want.
The kind of desire and need that completely threw Aoânung for an endless nosedive into feelings even he didnât understand. The pretty boy of Awaâatlu, the chiefâs son, was madly, deeply, inescapably in love.
âShe hates me.â He gracefully fell into a crouching position with his hands draped between his knees, fingertips grazing the rattan floor of his familyâs marui. âI am in love with her and she hates me.â
âYou need to be genuine, ma âitan.â His mother reached for his hand, resting it upon his own and squeezed gently. Encouraging her son to embrace gentility with a potential mate was obvious and it came from a place of loveâhowever it was a blanketed way of telling Aoânung that he needed to remove his head from his ass.
âTomorrow she will in the market trading the bone knives she makes, you can start with an apology.â His father suggested, nodding his head with another statement that felt like a blanketed order.
And when Aoânung stared openly at his father, eyes only slightly narrowed, his father returned the gesture. âDo not tell me you are so clueless about your future mate that you didnât know she made knives?â
Aoânungâs cheeks flushed with warmth and his ears had become flatter against his head. He wished he could have told his father differently but that would be a bold faced lie and he knew his father would catch him. There was a folly that settled into his bones, making him feel more like an ass than he had before. Because how could he have followed you everywhere with this overbearing crush, that quickly became the desire to mate, and yet he didnât know you made knives?
âAoânung.â His father spoke his name, almost deadpanned over the lack of conscious behavior when it came to you.
Aoânung he was an idiot, but he was an idiot in love.
There was a clamouring chatter that had felt necessarily familiar to you in the markets of Awaâatlu. With wicker baskets resting against the rattan floor of the open air gathering hall, also used for clan parties, there was a flux of Metkayina coming and going. Your interaction with Aoânung the day before had left you with a strong repulsion towards the beach and the shallow fishing pools by the tide-wall.
You desired a break from him and every other arrogant warrior like him, the kind of Metkayina that thought they were Eywaâs gift to the sea. They were skilled, that was undoubted, but he was also pretty and Aoânung with his pretty face had only boosted his already healthy ego.
An ego and confidence that made so many girls in the village go starry eyed whenever they had seen him. Yet Aoânung hadnât seemed as if he would ever be interested in a mateâeven if he had multitudes of Metkayina who wanted to be with him. None of them had ever won his favour.
Your avoidance of the shoreline and the beach, where most of the activity from those arrogant hunters were, should have given you a break from Aoânung. It wasnât just a convenient excuse that you had to be in the market today, you had genuinely wanted one day without him bothering you. Every time you went somewhere, he had seemed to pop up in your presence.
If you were looking for shells to grind together to make dye for the wood you used to make your knives, Aoânung was there trying to annoy you. If you were enjoying the early morning sun before the village was awake, somehow Aoânung would know. And he would follow you just to ask you if you were up because you didnât want anyone to see your grumpy face that early.
Small comments that might have been insignificant to some, had the potency to worm under your skin and eat at your composure.
But market day should be peaceful. Should.
And yet from the corner of your eyes, you see himâfirst the curls of the cocky son of the chief that are loose and not restrained in a bun and then his impish blue eyes that light up in your direction. You want to run, again, you want to complete vacate the market to avoid his nasty little comments. Comments that tempt you to strike him with the rough unfinished wood you use to make your knives.
But you canât run. You canât escape because your brother is out on his duties as scout, and your sister is gone off into the market to trade some spear heads for beads. You are alone to watch your familyâs market area and even if you could leave, Iomll wants to purchase a knife for his grandson who will going through his Iknimaya.
Iomll is a good friend of your fathers, he is an aged warrior who now enjoys his older age with his mate and his childrenâs children. The warrior-hunter before you are scouring your crafted small weapons with a scrutinized cautious eye, not because he thinks your weapons are ill-made. Itâs the opposite, you have a talent for making these small weapons and there are too many to choose from.
Which means you are stuck.
âThe âevengan is relentless.â Iomll sees Aoânung approaching with a directness to every step, a personal mission that has him weaving in and out of the crowds.
âThe boy is going to get smacked.â You grit your teeth and look back at the aged hunter before you, hair turning grey and lines of experience on his face. You beg him with your eyes, pleading with him to choose fast so you could make your hasty departure.
But Eywa does not bless you with luck because Iomll is continuing to take his time and Aoânung steps beside the experienced hunter. Aoânung and Iomll share a common understanding when it comes to the need for sharp blades at their sides. Not just for hunting or fishing but for personal defence.
He looks half-assed at the knives, briefly admiring your craftsmanship before he lifts his head. He doesnât even have to say a word, not a single syllable before you are already scowling at him. Your arms fold across your chest and you are cursing yourself for not trying harder to convince your sister to stay here so you could wander around.
âThese are nice knives, ma suylang.â Aoânung compliments you, calling you his petal, or flower, as if that could make you any less likely to stab him. âYou are very talented.â
âI am not trading with you.â You reach forward and grab the edge of the thin, tanned hide the knives are lying on, and yank it away from him.
Iomll is unabashedly watching you and Aoânung, looking from you to him and back again, a rising and knowing smile forming on his wise face. He is silent though mindful as he taps the edge of a knife and as a trade, hands over a tightly bound wrapped food parcel. You thank him and hand the knife over before you set the food down on the table to the left of you.
âWhy wonât you trade with me, paskalin? I have something you want.â Aoânungâs lips form a pout, playful in nature and just as aggravating.
âIâm not trading with you becauseâŚâ your ears flatten and your frown deepens. Aoânung is relentless, he wonât leave until you give him some explanation, and you still canât escape. ââŚbecause you will do something stupid like the skxawng you are and blame my knife for it.â
You lean toward and look past Aoânung, eyes trailing the length of the market until you find your sister. Relief does not come to you, not when you take notice of the other person with your sister. Roxto and your sister were speaking closely, laughing and flirting, with her body turned into him and his hand brushing curls out of her face.
They were in their own little world, and you were stuck here.
âI am sorry.â Aoânungâs voice draws you back to focus, and you rake your narrowed, suspicious gaze over him.
âWhat?â
âI am sorry.â He places his hand upon his chest and tilts his head down, giving you a better look at those striking eyes. âFor always making jokes at your expense.â
âYouâre apologizing for teasing me?â You scoff and tilt your head to the side, indignation for Aoânung pausing while curiosity took centre stage. âIs this a joke? Did you get bitten by the kaliâweya?â
âMa sevin,â Aoânungâs lips begin to form a smirk, the impish nature of his personality shines through his apology, âyou think Iâm joking?â
âYes.â Your eyes narrow and you lean forward again, this time you call for your sister and demand her attention.
She turns her head and looks your way, eyes flitting between you and Aoânung, before she apologizes to Roxto. He takes her wrist in his hand and she turns back, just soft enough of a spin to have him kissing her, and you can see the way she laughs into the kiss. When she finally starts walking toward you and your familyâs market place, you turn your head back toward Aoânung and shoot him a dirty look.
âIâm genuine, Y/N.â He says your name, not some pet name or term of endearment. âIâm sorry for being an ass, I amâŚI was only acting that way because I like you. I want to court you, yawntu.â
âNgari tĂŹreyä tirea slu horenka.â You recoil as surprised shock takes the place of your anger and you feel your eyes narrowing. Your mind is reeling as you try to make sense of what he was saying, of what he was implying.
Your life's spirit has become lawlessâyou were accusing him of being out of his mind, because the complete 180 he had done was messing with you. How could this stupid boy go from teasing you and taunting you every chance he had gotten, to suddenly confessing that he actually liked you? That he wanted to court you but in some twisted expulsion of words, had instead bullied you?
âNo, listen to me-â your sister stepped up to the table, and you stepped back.
Your sister greets Aoânung with a strained smile, she knows all about the cocky son of the chief who had spent his time teasing you every chance he got. You donât say a word to her or another to Aoânung, you turn sharply on your heel. You begin navigating your way through the crowds of Metkayina that are here to trade and barter with each other.
Behind you Aoânung is trying to follow, he is calling your name telling you to stop, to let him explain himself but giving him the time of day feels like a lofty chore.
There is a party in the village, a clan party to celebrate the Metkayina who have completed their iknimayaâs and become fully fledged hunters. With food and music that welcomes the newest successful Metkayina, there is little focus on who is missing from the party.
You could easily be overlooked by anyoneâjust not Aoânung.
Eclipse has settled upon the shores of Awaâatlu and the nightlife is vibrant. With bioluminescent algae lighting up the shoreline and shallow waters, there is a transcending beauty that is only visible in the darkened hours of the long day. Itâs in the sand that glows where he finds you sitting, just you among the waves with a thin blanket wrapped around your shoulders. Your curls are loose and free, your kuru sits in your lap where your fingers are weaving shells into the thickest parts of your braid.
Aoânung approaches you from behind, bringing you a gift of peace and apology, desperate to make amends. In his hands is a bowl made from wood hardened and sealed with resin, carved with his familyâs design, but itâs whatâs in the bowl that he hopes you will take from him.
âI donât want to talk to you.â You donât give him the opportunity to say anything before you already shut him down with a clear directive, even if it is softly spoken.
âRutxe, mikyun oeyä ngaytxoaru.â Aoânung continues his approach although he takes his time as to not spook you, like you were glider fin or hammerbrow fish that would dart away.
âApologize? Thatâs why youâre here?â You question him with a sharp edge trailing at the edge of your words, and when you turn your head to throw a look at him, Aoânung is equally as captivated as he is vexed.
Not by you, but by how stupid he clearly was.
âI want to apologize to you, sevin.â Aoânung painstakingly yet smoothly comes to sit next to you with that bowl in his hands, light traces of steam rising from the interior. The steam carries the heady, intoxicating smell of flat snake fish, herbs and vegetablesâyour preferred delicacy to have when the clan throws parties. âI brought you your favourite.â
You lean over and look into the bowl he carried from the clan party to you, somehow balancing the bowl expertly without spilling a drop all while also carrying a gift. There is speculation in his gaze as you slowly take the bowl from him and set it in your lap, although you donât eat from it yet. You let it rest upon your thighs while you stare him down, waiting for some kind of punchline.
Instead, Aoânung apologizes for the second time since he saw you.
âI was an ass; I am an ass.â He reaches for you and rests his hand upon yours, fingers squeezing the edge of your palm as a glimmer of apprehension radiates off him. âI really do like you paskalin, and I do want to court you. I am a skxawng and I will always be a skxawng, I didnât know how to manage my feeling because-â
âYou are used to having girls fall at your feet and worship the ground you walk on.â You finally lift the bowl to your lips and sip on the broth, flavours bursting on your tongue are hearty and warm, and you purr from the experience. âYou are pretty, and you are stupid.â
âIncredibly stupid.â He doesnât deny your claim, he fully leans into the insult because he deserves it. âI am an idiot in love.â
âYour sister already spoke to me after I left the market.â You raise the bowl again and continue eating, a sight that has the tension in Aoânungâs shoulders begin to lessen. The simple act of you eating what he gave you is a hopeful sign that perhaps you could forgive him, and he could make it up to you. âShe is a good spokeswoman on your behalf, she almost makes you out to be less of a skxawng.â
Aoânung takes the chance to lean in and draws his hand from where it rests upon yours, and places it against your shoulder. He is evaluating the water, gauging whether you will decide to smack him off and curse him out, or let him continue.
âI want to court you ma suylang-â
â-you arenât done apologizing yet.â You cut him off, you speak over him and he draws his attention to your lips as they move, striking him with another jolt of desire.
âI know a way I can properly apologize, yawne.â His voice grows heavier; his eyes become a blaze of lust and need that follow a trail from your pretty face to the smooth skin that leads to your chest and then to your tewng.
âYou need to put your tongue to better use.â The bowl he brought you is set aside and out of the way in order for you to shift your body toward him.
Your arms stretched out behind you giving you something to lean on as you arch your back and begin to spread your legs. Your tewng falls between your thighs which have only become more exposed with this new position, effectively stealing his attention and his ability to speak.
âYou want to apologize?â You croon as you move your hand down your abdomen to the ties of your loincloth, giving one side a sharp tug followed by the other.
As the loin cloth becomes loose around your thighs and pelvis, Aoânung is spurned to action. With a sharp and reflective move, he is like a predator that has found itâs next meal, but this is all done by your demand.
âYouâll forgive me.â He speaks confidently while grabbing onto your hips and dragging you across the sand until your thighs and directly below his chin. âIâll make sure of it.â
âSo cocky.â You rest your hand upon that bun he always seems to keep his curls in, and give him a shove, directing his eyes and mouth to where you want them to be. âYou can start your apology here.â
He ducks his head and even before he parts his lips to follow the demands you make for his apology, the warmth of his breath has your thighs tremblingâeven if it is only once. This is what you demand, what you require of him to apologize and prove that he is serious, then so be it. Aoânung will prove it to you.
âYou are pretty, paskalin.â Aoânung lean forward and bumps the tip of his nose against your clit, a sensation that has you shifting beneath him. Itâs the start of the wordless path to forgiveness, and he has to follow it with action to have you preening beneath him.
Action which comes in the form of the first expulsion of his tongue against you, the warmth of his tongue contrasts the coolness of the night air. He pushes himself further between your thighs as the tip of his tongue flicks against your pussy lips in a rhythmic motion that draws soft whines from your lips. The lullaby of sweet pleasure has only just begun and already he knows that this is a song that he will never grow tired of.
With another flick of his tongue against you, your hand tightens on his curls, and you push his head further into you, demanding more. Aoânung gives you what you want when he pushes his tongue between those sweet pussy lips that have already begun dripping with your personal brand of sweet honey.
He latches onto your cunt with his mouth and while his tongue is busy, Aoânung uses his hand to play with your hard little clit. His fingers reached for that hooded nub, teasing you with every soft pinch and twist.
You react with another rising surge of whines that turn to moans, your back arching and your thighs spreading further apart. He grins into your cunt, pleased with how youâre reacting to what he is doing to you, to how he is eating you out like he is a man starved.
âOh fuckâŚâ When you use the Sky-Peopleâs language to curse, Aoânung pulls his tongue out of your sweet cunt, and the loss of his tongue has your eyes burning. You raise your head and stare him down with fire in your eyes and your nostrils flaring. âAoânung-â
âRelax.â He doesnât leave you longing for long before he returns to your cunt but instead of slipping his tongue between your pussy lips, he uses his tongue to lick up the length of your sweet heat. From the bottom to the top his tongue moves slowly until he reaches your clit, and then he sucks that nub into his mouth.
You respond with another deep arching of your back and a rush of moans fall from your lips, your eyes screw closed with the rush of pleasure. Aoânung continues the track of teasing your clit, switching back and forth between sucking on your clit and flicking his tongue against that nub.
He watches you with incredible focus, watching your reactions to gauge how you are feeling about what he is doing. Itâs his goal to drive you mad, to make you forget about every stupid thing he has done, and he will not leave until he has completed his task.
Every moment that he has his tongue on your clit is another delicious sound that he can pull from your pretty lips, but he is not singularly using his tongue, noâhe drops his hand to your pussy lips and runs his fingers against you. He gathers the slickness that is evident of your desire and uses it as lube to push his fingers into your cunt, pumping slowly at a pace that has your breath catching.
âAoânung, fuckâŚâ you moan his name in tune with grinding yourself against his hand, searching out more of that deliriously intoxicating friction of his fingers and his mouth. âDonât stop, Eywa if you stopâŚâ
âHave I earned your forgiveness?â He removes his lips from your clit with a pop, lips glistening from your arousal with that sweet, slick honey that drips down his chin.
âIf you donât put your mouth back-â There is an intensity about your eyes, alight with anger fuelled by sexual need that has you baring your teeth with a hiss.
âI have more work to do.â He grins and lowers his head again, taking a brief moment to kiss above your pelvic bone muttering a compliment into your skin before he returns to his task.
Even if it takes all night, Aoânung will earn your forgiveness.

She Loved Us Both
Setting: A dimly-lit bar in Seoul, maybe somewhere quiet and out of the way. Itâs raining outsideâof course it is. Theyâre both older now, hardened by life and their respective paths, but still sharp.
Tone: Broody, charged, nostalgic. A little violent, a little vulnerable. A deep-dive into mutual respect born from shared heartbreak.
Ahn Suho doesnât start fights anymore. Not unless he has to. But the second he sees Geum Seong-je across the bar, tipping back a shot and laughing like he owns the damn night, something in him stirs.
Itâs not jealousy. Not exactly. Itâs something older. Sharper. Something that tastes like regret and sounds like your voice.
Suho walks over. âYou Geum Seong-je?â
The other man turns slowly, one eyebrow raised. âDepends on whoâs asking.â
Suho swings.
The crack of knuckles against jaw echoes louder than the music. Chairs scrape back. Voices rise. But Seong-je doesnât fall. He just wipes his mouth and smirks, like heâs been waiting.
They fight. Brief, brutal. No wasted movements. Two men whoâve both bled before, who both know exactly where to aim. But no one wins. Theyâre both standing, breathing hard, staring at each other like the past just walked back in.
âShe told me you were a good fighter,â Seong-je mutters.
Suho scoffs, rubbing his jaw. âShe told me you had a smart mouth.â
A pause.
Then they laugh. It shouldnât be funny, but it is. Because of course it was you. Of course the only woman who could make both of them act like this was the one they both lost.
âDrink?â Seong-je offers.
âYeah,â Suho says, settling into the seat beside him. âI could use one.â
The bar is dark. The rain outside makes the windows shiver. They donât speak for a while, sipping whiskey like itâs medicine.
Itâs Seong-je who breaks the silence.
âShe ever bring you lunch?â
Suho nods. âAlways forgot to pack her own.â
âSame,â Seong-je smiles faintly. âUsed to steal half of mine.â
âShe liked tteokbokki,â Suho says. âHated fish cakes, though.â
âAnd raw onions,â Seong-je adds. âShe said they were aggressive.â
They both laugh again. This time itâs softer. Sadder.
âHow long were you two together?â
âAbout a year,â Suho replies. âEnded when I started getting into fights more than coming home.â
âWe lasted two,â Seong-je says. âShe left when she caught me lying. Said it wasnât about the secretâit was about the silence.â
Silence.
Suho nods slowly. âThat sounds like her.â
They go shot for shot now. Telling stories.
The way you used to press your face into Suhoâs hoodie whenever you were tired.
The way you used to braid your fingers through Seong-jeâs hair while he laid in your lap.
Your laugh. Your anger. Your affection.
âShe called me baby when she was pissed,â Seong-je says, almost grinning.
âYeah,â Suho laughs, âLike a fucking threat.â
They donât talk about how it ended.
Not really.
They donât talk about the way your voice shook the last time you raised it. Or the way the door slammed, or how quiet the days were after. They donât talk about the apology letters sent and unsent, the texts typed and deleted.
But they talk about love.
âI wouldâve married her,â Seong-je says.
âI wouldâve followed her anywhere,â Suho murmurs.
Another pause. The kind that only comes when something real just slipped out.
Then Seong-je lifts his glass. âTo the girl who ruined us.â
Suho clinks his own glass against it. âTo the only one who ever made it worth it.â
Later, they part ways. No more punches. No more words.
Just a glance.
The kind two men share when theyâve bled for the same ghost.
And when Suho steps back into the night, collar upturned and heart just a little heavier, he thinks maybe he was never alone in missing you.
