He is single now so technically you’re not doing something wrong. But I think it’s a good think you’re thinking about it. The fact that you’re friends are against it is also a thing you should keep in mind. But the thing is, if you really like him, you can go for it. But since it’s kind of a bad situation, I’d suggest you take it slow. That way you’ll know if he’s serious about it. If he is and you are too, and you are happy, I’m pretty sure your friends will come around. But it’s also important to talk about it with them. Let them know you understand why they think it’s a bad idea and try to explain what you feel for him. But if you let them know you understand why they are worried, they will probably try to understand you too. 

So take it slow. If things don’t work out, that’s not nice, but you’ll get over it. And if things work out, that’s amazing! But you should not let him just take you for granted. You said ‘he wants to do stuff with me’, if you’re not comfortable doing some things, then don’t! Take your time and make sure he respects you and takes you serious. You deserve that!
