I fear for the Crown season 5, tbh. I liked the first seasons but season 4 was so pro Diana it was obvious. So now with season 5, we are going to have the next episode of poor poor little girl vs the evily evil husband/former husband... so glad... at least, the show at the beginning did not pretend the queen and her husband were utterly nice and perfect people...
HAH! Yeah. I was honestly surprised that they included the information that Diana was having copious affairs of her own at all. Usually even this much is never included in her movie's narrative because most people use that Morton book which heavily uses narrative Diana uses where she never confesses to harassing her lovers, being obsessive, cheating on her husband before he did and being overall a bit scheme-y and lying blushing bride to her husband, who forced him to get rid of his dogs.
The show producers know that people are absolutely enamored by the narrative now nearly 30 years old that poor little Cinderella Diana, who became a princess and was so kind but was neglected by the cold royals is what people find compelling. Which is not wrong. People still go gaga over it today, clearly this formula works!
They do not want to hear about that the kind, AIDS taboo breaking princess they all loved was a cruel wife and employer in her own right too. That the woman they idolize was not a perfect mentally ill victim who only cried and suffered neigh silently asking for bare minimum help. She was MESSY. She shouted at her employees when her mental illness acted up worse, harassed constantly ( I mean on count of 100s!) by phone calls a man she was trying to see, played with media to get back her husband, made cruel elitist remarks against her actually middle class sister in-law ( Sophie of Essex, Back when people used to call her "Diana copy" in a derogatory manner and Diana used to fuel the fire too) etc
The Crown could go a notch higher and really expose the rot in how bad Royal institution is by making everyone see how it drives these people to act so cruelly to themselves and others but I don't think Morgan is honestly interested. He seems to have a "person of interest" in each season. King Edward the N*zi was of season 1, Margaret was in season 2, Charles was in season 3, Diana now in season 4 etc. They remain meow-meows for that season only and then are treated like villains the next one( except maybe Margaret, she remains the constant sufferer of all seasons)
At least, and I know its like bare minimum standard, that he is not interested in writing boring people and black and white narrative. So there is that. I think he could use the honest history to write something more compelling. Its because the British Royal family is just so naturally dramatic in their own right and THAT is why people are so fascinated by them to this day. Their generational strife is like watching a free soap opera, however cruel it is to say so! ( they are human beings after all)
Like for example if they really want to show Queen being imperfect person, instead of showing the narrative of how she is stiff with Diana , they got take it up a notch and show her actively covering up for her corrupt children by using the respect people have for her for one( Like she is doing now. Taking her ped* son out and about in Important Church services of public as if he was not roaming about in Epsti*n island with bunch of 16-18 year olds. Then covering up how his grandson Harry and his wife abused their staff so much they have some of them PTSD and are still trying to not let it get out)
They can do better. I am just saying. There are compelling "good" people worth rooting for in the family but keeping it boring by focusing on one or two old ones and hence forced to whitewash them all the time is dull and repetitive. It has been done already.
