BEGINNINGS IN CASTELIA CITY…

When the Fagins found out they were expecting a baby, they were living in a penthouse apartment on the corner of Castelia Street with a scenic view of the pier and Skyarrow Bridge. Her father was a high-powered executive at the Gamefreak building next door and her mother was an undefeated divorce attorney who had made a fortune earning trophy wives settlements including seven figure sums and vacation homes in Undella Town. They were thrilled at the prospect of having a child and raising her to be equally as brilliant, speculating on whether she’d be a lawyer like her mother or a tech genius like her father or possibly an award-winning scientist who put them both to shame. Sadly, Tabitha Fagin never got to see what her daughter would become. There were complications during her delivery and she died in surgery a few hours after her child’s birth. Daniel Fagin was devastated by the loss, but took comfort in a daughter who was the spitting image of his wife from the first time he looked at her. He named her after his late wife, nicknaming her Tabby affectionately. For the first few years of Tabby’s life, Daniel retained his job overseeing game designers and various relatives and nannies took care of Tabby during the day. The little girl was a natural born troublemaker, often slipping away at the playground only to be found up a tree fifteen minutes later or destroying the penthouse’s expensive wallpaper by finger-painting all over it. Rather than being upset, Daniel was often amused by his daughter’s wily behavior much to the chagrin of her other caretakers. He resented having to leave her so much, but he wanted to be able to provide the future for her that he and his wife had once dreamed of.

On Tabby’s fifth birthday, her father took the day off and brought her to a local animal shelter and asked her if she wanted to pick out a puppy. Tabby practically tripped over herself with excitement, quickly passing over Furfrous and Growlithes in favor of a tiny Lillipup. When they filled out the paperwork necessary to take her new friend home, the adoption worker let it slip that unfortunately they put down several Lillipups every month. Tabby, young and shocked, looked up at her father teary-eyed and asked if they could all come and live in their apartment. The worker was shocked when Daniel turned to her and asked how much money they would require to become a no-kill shelter. After that, things slowly began to change. The Fagins moved into a smaller but still nice apartment with their new puppy. Tabby and her father began spending more and more of their free time at the animal shelter, bringing more dogs home over time. It wasn’t long before Daniel cut back his hours at work and by the time Tabby was eight, he quit completely. This put the Fagins in a precarious financial situation as most of the interest on his savings were going to fund the animal shelter. They moved into a rundown houseboat on Thumb Pier and Tabby began spending a lot of time in Castelia Sewers, scavenging up discarded items to sell.As she got older, Tabby learned that her wild streak worked well for the city streets. She was able to improvise new ways to make money, such as pickpocketing businessmen walking around the nicer parts of town and battling innocent trainers who foolishly wandered into the sewers. Her ability to climb anything allowed her to escape easily through manhole covers and up fire escapes when being pursued and her Lillipup had a naughty streak that allowed him to follow easily in suit. 

Her father worried about her, but Tabby felt more at home sending cheeky insults at angry rich men then she ever had in their penthouse apartment. And she still spent a ton of time at their shelter, picking up basic Pokemon medicine and earning the trust of skittish Poochyenas who had abandonment issues. She had always enjoyed the company of Pokemon over people, a fact which another volunteer noticed and suggested she try her hand at training with the Pokedex Challenge. Tabby immediately dismissed the idea, unwilling to leave her father alone when he’d already lost so much. And yet she’d find herself scrolling through maps of Kanto on her phone, thinking of all the new Pokemon she’d never seen that lived there. One day she was looking at tickets from Castelia to Vermilion City when her father approached from behind her and inquired about a possible trip. Tabby immediately closed the window and tried to play it off, but Daniel quickly found the Pokedex Challenge in their old laptop’s recently deleted internet history. He still had a few computer tricks up his sleeves after all this time. When he confronted her, Tabby reluctantly admitted that she liked to daydream about training but that she wasn’t seriously considering it. Her father encouraged her not to give up her dreams though, he told her that he saw the same passion on her face when she was with Pokemon that he’d seen when he used to watch her mother in the courtroom. Tabby reluctantly agreed to leave, under the condition that if he needed anything that she would come back. She cashed in a favor with a dock worker she knew and a week later she and her father stood on the pier, locked in a teary embrace. Tabby still feels a little shaky about being on her own for the first time without her dad and her found family of dogs, but she’s unwilling to let anyone in Kanto know how potentially vulnerable she is. She’s going to beat them all out and become Pokemon Champion, there’s no room for weakness.
