for beings like you and satoru, eternity stretches vast and endless, far beyond the span of others' lives, a horizon that will never ever fade. at the same time, your kind is unique, bound by an ancient instinct--once you choose a mate, it is forever. like geese soaring together through the skies, migrating across vast landscapes, always returning to one another no matter the distance, or like penguins braving icy winters side by side, huddling together for warmth and enduring the harshest of conditions to protect each other, your kind knows no second loves. there is no wavering, no room for doubt. the bond is absolute, eternal, unbreakable.

but eternity isn’t as romantic as mortals imagine. centuries passed before you met satoru, centuries of watching humans live and love. they seemed so fleeting, their lives fragile as frost on grass at dawn. yet that fragility gave their connections a beauty you couldn’t simply ignore.

"oh, crap," he said, staring at you with wide, guilty eyes before hastily taking out a handkerchief.

you only blinked at him, unimpressed that he was touching you.

you were annoyed at the act, even though his handkerchief and your clothing were in between your skin and his. an apology would have been enough.

"what are you doing?"

"trying to fix this," he said, dabbing at your coat with the enthusiasm of a toddler cleaning a crayon disaster. "don’t worry, it’s just coffee--"

"stop." you quietly said with a frown.

it just suddenly came to you: the bond snapping into place like threads of silk pulled taut. there was no denying it, no second-guessing. the connection between you was older than time itself, written into your very existence.

"oh," he said, realization also hitting him. then, with a smirk, "finally."

"you’re my mate?" you blurted, incredulous

"what, disappointed?"

"maybe a little."

he burst into laughter, the sound filling the air like sunlight, and despite yourself, you smiled.

and yet, beneath that warmth, a question lingered.

because while the bond was absolute, its success wasn’t guaranteed.
