I've answered this before but my opinions on Hawks change depending on my mood so It would be good to answer this like every couple of months

also spoilers (more than the ones I told you before)

So basically it all started when Hawks decided to commit murder. Now, I'm ok with murder, but he committed the cardinal sin of not getting any angsty character development from it!

Or at least it looked like that at the time. Recently I have been convinced that we have been getting subtle hints that Hawks has in fact been insane the whole time actually, so I'm waiting for him to have a mental breakdown mid battle in this final arc (supposedly it's the final arc idk)

depending on how that will go I'll either stay disappointed that his character arc was sidelined so Hori could forcibly shove him into the Todoroki subplot and I'll be mourning his lost potential together with Lady Nagant, Mirio, the entire PLF and half of class 1A...

or I'll be cheering that he finally became self aware enough to realise that maybe it's a little bit weird to follow a love confession with murder and then spend hours cleaning up every drop of blood on the crime scene!

Anyway I said that I change my opinions on him regularly, but the conclusion has actually mostly stayed the same. Basically I don't like the way Horikoshi handles his character. Even if the breakdown happens now, we still spent a big chunk of the story where we didn't really see the development. His character arc was on pause as I like to call it. It's been unpaused now but that was still wasted time that he could have spent growing as a character but he didn't so now his arc feels both delayed and rushed at the same time.

If you're asking how I got the "Hawks hater" label specifically, it's because of a post I made a few months ago where I defended Dabi's decision to use the video footage of the murder in his broadcast. It blew up a bit (like 3000+ notes blew up, it was my top post for so long and I hated seeing it there). Basically a bunch of hero stans saw it and we started debating in the comments about whether or not Hawks' decision was right or not (it wasn't) and if Dabi is a normal person with feelings (he is). Admittedly I was really angry in that post and also the comparisons I made were inaccurate and I didn't understand Hawks' character. That's still not an excuse though, I probably should have ignored most of the replies and not try to debate with anyone, especially since most of the arguments were not even about the actual post. But I do still stand by the original point of the post, which is that Dabi had every right to expose Hawks the same way he did Endeavor, and that's why I haven't deleted it. And also because I think it's good to see how different I view Hawks now compared to back then.
