I just found out by chance that the German word for “seal” - the animal - is “Seehund”. “See” means “sea” (or also “lake”, apparently??), and “Hund” means “dog”. So obviously, Germans call seals “sea dogs”.

Conclusion: If I move into the ocean, I know what I’ll get for a pet.
