I was tagged by @thewriteflame. Thank you so much!! Please enjoy Valeska casually roasting the shit out of Carrion during their Big Argument.
âI wasn't thinking!â
[Valeska] narrowed her eyes at his outburst. âYou never are.â She moved towards the door, but Carrion stepped in front of it, blocking her path.
Anger flared in his mind, heat rising to his cheeks. âThatâs not my job,â he retorted, âitâs yours! And you werenât exactly thinking either.â

It's not fair for Valeska's player to keep shattering my soul like this. I can't take it anymore!!!!
Like:
Valeska: "I think I'm dying."
Edelgard: "If you didn't want to answer my question, you could have just said so."
Valeska: "No, I think I'm dying."
Edelgard: "Why?"
Valeska: [*explains that she's actually feeling emotions for the first time in her life, and that's bad*]
Edelgard: "Fear is natural. It keeps you alive."
Valeska: "Fear is dangerous -- especially for someone with my condition [having survived Drakkenheim's fall]. 17 out of 39 [Academy children who survived] died that way."
Edelgard: "If this is what they're teaching you at the Academy, it's wrong."
Valeska: "This isn't what I was taught, it's what I observed."
Edelgard: "Did you consider Carrion a friend before [all the bad stuff happened]?"
Valeska: "Mages don't have friends."
Edelgard: "Okay, then, how did you regard Carrion before?"
[*EXTREMELY LONG PAUSE*]
Valeska: "I thought he was just like me."
Valeska: "But he sees himself as a monster. And if he sees me like him, the way I see him like me, that means he sees me as a monster."
THAT LAST ONE, HOLY FUCK. I'm almost nauseous thinking about it. Because the reason he sees himself as a monster is the exact reason she once told him she doesn't see him as a monster.
He sees himself as a monster because he hurt (and possibly killed) one of his best friends in the world. And then when he met Valeska, she was the first and only person to ever not be afraid of his rage form. It confused him, but she told him "Why should I be afraid of you? You didn't try to hurt me."
And now he hates himself more than ever because he hurt her and Edelgard, and because he scared her. He does not hate her, and he most definitely does not think of her as a monster. She's more or less the furthest thing from a monster in his mind.
I'm just losing my fucking mind over all of this. I need them to FIX THIS. I need them to be FRIENDS. I need them to be HAPPY. For Valeska to allow herself to feel things, and for Carrion to stop hating himself so much.
It almost physically pains me thinking about how much worse off they are now than even when they first met. Carrion has no idea how to fix this, and he doesn't even know half the reasons that she's mad at him. He's tried to apologize but he's terrible at it, and even if he wasn't, she doesn't believe him anyways.
Someone stab me, I think it would hurt less.
(@rickyrainfrog I'm not sure whether to hug you or punch you for DMing this campaign.)
I was tagged by @akindofmagictoo. This isn't technically the last lines I wrote, but it includes the most recent line I added/edited, so it counts, okay? It's from Carrion and Valeska's argument from a few months ago.
âYour loyalty to the Academy is blinding you to anything else. I just want you to see there are other options.â
âAnd so you believed that Oskar was a better choice?â [Valeska] scoffed. âThatâs nothing short of foolish. The Academy has never done anything to hurt me, but Oskar would in a heartbeat.â
Carrion froze for a moment. In all of their arguing heâd nearly forgotten the reason for it all. âI didnât intend to tell him anything. It was an accident! I regretted it the moment I spokeââ
âAnd yet you still havenât apologized,â she noted.
ââAnd I would take it back if I could,â he finished, ignoring her.
I'm going to tag @oh-no-another-idea @dragon-swords-prophecies and leave this an OPEN TAG!
I'm being held at gunpoint to finish my Carrion fic from last year (aka, if I don't finish it, I don't get to read Valeska's player's fic about her modify memory spell being removed), and I desperately need something to focus on other than last night's session, so um. Enjoy Carrion having a bad time after his fight with Valeska.
(I'm vaguely considering this a fill for a 9 lines tag for @reneesbooks)
Carrion stalked into the night, keeping his gaze fixed firmly on the road ahead of him. He didnât know where he was going, and frankly, he didnât care. Anywhere was better than that tiny room, with Edelgardâs disappointed frown and Valeskaâs high-and-mighty voice bouncing off the walls.
He let his feet carry him up the street, past other tiny houses filled with adventurers, paying no mind to where he was going. All he could see was Valeskaâs face floating behind his eyes, expression unreadable.
âI wasnât thinking.â
âYou never are.â
Edelgardâs voice echoed in his ears. âWas that really necessary?â
âIt was an accident!â
He shook his head, trying to chase the two women out of his mind. Looking up, he realized he had come to a stop in front a run-down building. A sign swinging above the black-painted door read The Skull & Key.
Unlike the surrounding buildings, the tavern was brightly lit, and raised voices and raucous laughter spilled out of the open windows. The door swung open every few moments to admit or release a new patron. Each time the door closed, the skull mounted on it rattled, its jaw clacking as if it were laughing along with the patrons.
The idea of dealing with people wasnât appealing, but at least they were distracting. And if nothing else, there would be alcohol.
He stepped towards the door, but hesitated. Glancing up at the sign, he studied the design painted there. Something nagged at his brain. Heâd seen that symbol before. Where?
Shaking his head, he brushed aside the thought. It didnât matter. This was a tavern. Taverns served alcohol. Alcohol would make it easier not to think. And right now he wanted nothing more than to never think again.
tagging @alecsalamander since you enjoyed my stuff about Carrion the other day.
First and foremost I was already excited that Valeska was going to have Edelgard cast Zone of Truth on Carrion, bc I've always wanted to play under a ZoT spell.
BUT THEN, VALESKA GOT GREATER RESTORATION CAST ON HER, SO THE MODIFY MEMORY THAT GOT DONE TO HER YEARS AGO (AND THUS ALL OF HER BRAINWASHING) IS NOW UNDONE.
AND TO MAKE THINGS EVEN MORE INSANE, AT THE EXACT MOMENT THAT THAT GOT CAST, THEODORE WALKED INTO THE ROOM. (Mind you, Carrion is not there.)
FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK/pos
I am quite legitimately nauseous with a combo of terror and excitement. I literally think this is on par with the Sigmar reveal in terms of my emotional intensity (but very different emotions). I can't think straight.
I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep, breathe, or even EXIST until the next time we play Drakkenheim.

I was tagged by @oh-no-another-idea. Thank you for the tag! This is a perfect opportunity to share this really fun bit from my current Carrion WIP.
đ Rules: share a snippet describing a smile â a genuinely happy smile, a forced smile, a regretful smile, an arrogant smile, or a full on corrupted and possibly evil smile â and have fun!
Oskarâs eyes brightened, and Carrionâs pulse stuttered. But it wasnât directed at him. It was directed at her.
âYour magic was changed, you say? In what way?â He leaned forwards, eyes bright and hungry. Though he wasnât much taller than Valeska, his bulky frame made him appear to loom over her.
âHeâs lying,â she said. âHe does that a lot.â
Oskar smiled, and chills ran down Carrionâs spine. âIs he, now. Are you sure? If you would just let me study you, I could maââ
Hurriedly Carrion stepped between them again. âWhat are you going to do to her?â His voice low and tight, practically a growl.
Oskar stepped back, still smiling. âNothing. Absolutely nothing. Iâm merely curious.â
Something about the tone of his voice made the hair on Carrionâs arms stand on end. It wasnât just the lie, as blatant as it was. No, it was something subtler than that. The same hunger in his eyes when he looked at Valeska was now directed at Carrion. He had a sickening feeling that Oskar had very much heard â and even worse, understood â Valeskaâs comment about his own transformation.
Coward wasnât the right word, Carrion thought to himself. The truth was hungrier than that. Cleverer than that. Oskar was a scavenger: opportunisitc, eager to get his hands on anything he could. And that was much, much worse.

đŚâđĽPhoenix: What is something that ended in your character's life (like a relationship or job or loss) that changed them in a big way?
đDragon: What is one thing your character would protect at all costs?
Hello! Thanks for the question! I'm going to answer these for my two favorite disaster boys, since they both have excellent answers for it.
I'm going to be putting these answers under the cut because I talk A LOT.
Rook
What is something that ended in your character's life (like a relationship or job or loss) that changed them in a big way?
For Rook, that would be either his time sailing on the Tide Breaker or his relationship with his mentor, Sigmar. The former ended when he got kidnapped by a rival pirate captain who held him prisoner for over two years before he managed to escape, while the latter ended when it was revealed that Sigmar was actually a corpse being puppetted by the BBEG, Dr. Purity.
Being captured by Wolf was terrible for many reasons, but aside from all of the most obvious ones (the torture, the fact that he was betrayed by his own crew, etc.), the Tide Breaker had been the first place he was actually happy, and his captain, Zara, was the first person who was ever truly kind to him. Being taken from that made the whole thing even more traumatic that it already was. (As did the fact that Zara never came to save him. That got cleared up when he reunited with her 3 years later, but it was still a painful topic for both of them.)
The Sigmar/Purity reveal was bad because it was a one-two punch to Rook's already fragile ability to trust people. Firstly, the fact that a man who he deeply respected and cared about was actually a genocidal villain who had been working against the party for months was certainly a difficult thing to learn. But on top of that, he learned that one of his party members had actually been aware of Sigmar's identity since the first day they met and had said nothing, voluntarily allowing Rook to get closer and closer to him. He only helped reveal the truth when Sigmar's presence was no longer "convenient" for him. Needless to say, Rook was pretty fucking pissed about it.
So much so, in fact, that he needed a break from the party and separated from them temporarily, which is what allowed Wolf to kidnap him for a second time. Luckily the party came to save him, but it took them 3 weeks to find him, and by the time they did he was nearly dead.
What is one thing your character would protect at all costs?
First and foremost his friends. Rook is extremely reckless with his own life, especially when it comes to protecting the people he loves. Interestingly enough, the only person to ever call him out for his borderline suicidal behavior was Sigmar, the aforementioned BBEG corpse puppet.
As I mentioned, Rook struggles to trust people, however, there is one very simple loophole. Show him genuine kindness and he will be ready to kill and die for you in very short order.
After being granted captaincy of the Tide Breaker, he would also go to similar lengths to protect his ship and crew.
Other than his loved ones, the thing Rook is most desperate to protect is his rapier. It was a gift from Zara when she named him first mate just a few months prior to his capture by Wolf. When he escaped, he refused to leave without it and risked his life and recapture in order to get it back.
This proved to be very worth it when he was reunited with Zara and she said she was pleased to see he still had it. (She then proceeded to upgrade it for him, and when he tried to apologize for not taking proper care of it while being held by Wolf for a second time, she told him "I don't care how many nicks it gets, as long as it keeps you safe.")
Carrion
What is something that ended in your character's life (like a relationship or job or loss) that changed them in a big way?
For Carrion (or as he was known at the time, Reverence), there were two losses that changed his life. The first was the loss of his parents and home when the city of Drakkenheim was destroyed after being struck by a magically radioactive meteor. He was rescued from the rubble by a paladin named Theodore and taken to an orphanage where he spent the next few years.
The second is actually a combination of several losses. In quick succession he lost: one of his best friends (possibly by killing him), his mentor (the very same Theodore who had rescued him, and who left him chained to a cliff), and his faith. I guess you could also say he lost his job as a paladin at the same time.
Oh, and perhaps most importantly, he lost his name. After escaping the chains and narrowly surviving the ordeal, he named himself Carrion, after the last thing that Theodore said to him. He swore to someday kill Theodore, destroying his life as Theodore had done to him.
Unfortunately he doesn't understand that Theodore was stuck between a rock and a hard place (or perhaps more accurately a cliff and a bear), and actually ended up making the selfish decision by refusing to kill Carrion as his and duty expected.
What is one thing your character would protect at all costs?
First and foremost, Carrion would protect his own life. My DM once called him the "anti-Rook" because his actions (and monstrous transformations) are so strongly driven by a desperate desire to survive at all costs.
However, aside from that, I would also have to say his friends, especially Valeska, the party warlock. She was the only person who had never shown fear at his transformations, and because of that he quickly got very attached to her.
To quote a conversation they had under a Zone of Truth spell last Friday:
Valeska: "Do you trust me?"
Carrion: "Yes, always."
Valeska: "Why?"
Carrion: "Because you were the only person who had never been afraid of me."
