Black Shuck/Old Shuck - East Anglia, England
A black dog, spirit-like with large glowing red eyes and a bark coming from hell itself. That’s the animal that roams the coast, forests, and stalks churches in East Anglia. It was first known for its attack on the two churches Bungay and Blythburg. Reports saying it broke into the churches with claps of thunder, tearing people open and leaving scorch marks on the floor before disappearing into the night. If you go there today you can see the claw marks on the Blythburg church doors from when the black dog came in. It is said that if you see the Shuck you shall die before the year ends, so people will close their eyes when thunder booms on the darkest nights. He is most known for being a hellhound death omen. Drivers have reported him showing up in the road and turning into mist when he should have been hit. He follows lone travelers in the forest at night. And circles churches during storms. On a gentler note of this dog he is also known for leading many women to safety when they get lost in the woods for night, being a gentle and calming presence for them. He seems to understand that some people are good.
Some say he originated as a hellhound that was trapped on earth unable t go home to the underworld. Others think he was a normal dog, and when his owner was murdered he sat at the side of his shallow rave until his owners murderers had to kill him too so they weren’t found out. This claim seems to hold more weight ever since a skeleton of a person and a dog were dug up in a road when they were trying to widen it. So is this dog a vengeful hellhound or a lost dog looking for his owner? I guess people will have to meet him for themselves to find out the truth.
