anyone:
me: *rants for 76 straight hours about how much i hate every aspect of the spectacle/historiography/fetishization of the murder of elizabeth short, especially the name ‘black dahlia’
LESBIAN WEDDING PROPOSAL AT THE END OF THIS WEEK’S MFM EPISODE I’VE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
...the fucking “leopold & loeb juvenile detention center,” riverdale?
that is not how things work
there is no “oj simpson battered women’s memorial shelter”
there is no “richard speck scholarship for nursing students”
considering leopold & loeb’s victim was a juvenile but they were legally adults when they kidnapped and brutally murdered him for literally no reason other than being wealthy and privileged bored young dudes obsessed with Nietzsche and with a fuckload of internalized antisemitism because american eugenics craze of the ‘20s............. it’s a gross “shoutout”

I'm waiting for a black woman to do true crime stuff. Too many white women run Dylan Roof fan blogs
Yeahhh... I don't trust anyone whose interest is more about the doer than the done-to. I don't give a shit about the killers (as with cult leaders), I care about the memories of the people they killed and how they can be posthumously given back their humanity. Unfortunately, most true crime seems to be more about revictimizing them than giving them a voice. And I read something recently by a Black true crime writer about how white criminal psychology being applied to majority-Black community crimes causes an increased # of victims... I'll try to remember the link. I also read something recently about the racist media narrative surrounding Mitrice Richardson that made me cry... I think it was on Medium? I can't remember 100% but it was probably on Medium.
tl;dr, I agree with you, and I also feel like white people have no right to the stories of how non-white people die, in the same vein as my anger about men coopting women's (and children's) deaths for their own gain. Same with queer deaths and straight media producers, tbh, and Jews and goyim. Even though I've known for ages how biased I felt like men writing about women's deaths inherently is, my world was rocked when I finally found a book by a gay historian writing about the death of a closeted gay man... like, intellectually I probably would have said that straight people would have a bias, but I'm always surprised somehow when I get reminded... idk emotions about things. Basically, even though I don't believe in ~telling people what they can or can't do~ I feel like there should probably be at least an unspoken rule that you can't write about the real-life victimization of someone whose marginalization(s) you don't share, because even at a word-composition level, the writing will reflect the kyriarchy and not give the victims their due justice and memory.

you just helped me make up my mind about whether to watch mindhunter or not. even with anna torv in it
Honestly, it's not worth it. You can practically see Fincher reveling in the dehumanization of real women off in the corner. There's something supremely skeevy to me about the choice to fictionalize the protagonists (FBI agents) but use real serial killers and their victims as the stories. I feel like you either need to commit to fiction or to nonfiction for this kind of story. Either you've gotta show how corrupt Douglas was in real life, too -- which he was -- or you've gotta not get some actor to pretend to be Ed Kemper glorifying his choice to fuck disembodied heads of actual real women who actually really existed and did not consent to be turned into "fictional" entertainment. Enough fucking choices were taken away from them.
Men have no right to the stories of how women die.
