“I am going to make this film," said Patrick McGoohan, “to get something out of my system.” That something? Frustration at the treatment meted out to him by the Rank Organization. McGoohan’s film? One he is making in Spain with a 16-mm camera - "to enjoy myself creatively; one can't say I've done that with the films I've made for Rank.” McGoohan's complaint is not an uncommon one among Rank contract artists. "Maybe I sound arrogant," he says defensively, when he's explaining it to you. But on him rebellion looks good. “I know that my name has been made far more important by the three TV plays I've done," he says, “than by any of the five films I’ve made at Pinewood. They said I was an awkward customer so, to prove I wasn’t, I accepted two roles without even reading the scripts. “Their names? The Gypsy and the Gentleman and Nor the Moon By Night. Draw your own conclusions. Nor the Moon By Night should be released this month. I'm not defending myself on that one; it's just that I'm ashamed of it. "Future plans with Rank? Nothing. They haven't suggested a thing to me. You'd have thought they'd have cashed in on me, because I'm told that my plays, 'All My Sons,' 'Disturbance' and 'This Day In Fear' were very popular. But - nothing. "Do you know that I've been two years under contract to the Rank Organization, but until the other day, when I called in myself, I hadn't met the casting director for just over a year?" McGoohan paused, thought a moment, then grimly smiled. “Maybe you think I’m big-headed. But I'm complaining as loudly as this because I'm annoyed—there's so much frustration in British films. And there needn't be.” McGoohan is not one of your pretty Rank starlets moaning about losing a supporting role with Norman Wisdom - which is why I'm quoting him. His is a case that deserves to be known. He has a kind of sinister handsomeness, a dominating talent that needs discipline, but which is definitely a talent. His television appearances have proved his popularity.
