you love them, and you would plead for that to be the end of it. speak of an adoration that splits your chest open, pretend as though that doesn’t leave you to bleed out. fight their monsters and they will try to fight yours, and it will nearly feel as though it can last, though you know better ; their divinity is the moon, fascinating from afar and lethally cold up close.

you think they love you too. they tell you promises, say they’ll hang you in the stars once you are gone, touch your arms as if they are already making a constellation of you. you run together, the wild pair of you, until you feel holy. but a god’s devotion bears jealousy, and you can merely wait until someone decides your mortality must be made an example of.

orion.   i feel sorry for you, you know. narcissus.   sorry ?  your love would get you killed. how is that not pitiable ? orion.   at least i knew it before i lost. you’ll only ever be on your own.
