Dream is defined by the dreamers, not the other way round. And that makes him somewhat unknowable, which I feel is really the core conflict he has to contend with (on a very meta level, but it is something that runs like a red thread through his whole story: no one really understands him). So if we assumed that one of the main questions of āFables and Reflectionsā (well, the whole of The Sandman) is, āWhat are we giving up to understand something fully (and that includes ourselves)ā, it gets really heavy (itās probably most prominent in Soft Places, but itās really everywhere).
Because I think Dream does understand his own nature. He knows what he is and what he isnāt. He knows heās essentiallyā¦ unknowable. And the knowledge of being essentially unknowable is at least what partly undoes him (I maintain Orpheus was just the straw that broke the camelās back because it gave him a reason he could consolidate with his sense of who he was). Because what does it mean if the very personification of that which can never be fully known literally canāt āunknowā himself enough to keep going? It hurts my brain in so many waysā¦
