“Actually, when it comes to starter pokemon. The regional choices are given for the sake of individuals whose parents who are usually incapable of providing their first pokemon for them, or for those that want their child to have a pokemon that haven’t had any exposure to the while to ensure they are tame and easy to handle, but at the same time haven’t developed any attachment to anyone yet either. That practice is a bit more common than one would think, but usually it comes down to the parents usually being incapable of, or a lot of times not even wanting to breed their own pokemon with someone else’s to provide a pokemon for their child. Thus it is usually upon the request of the parents that we get at least a few options in order to at least provide for those cases, which those pokemon are supplied to us by local breeders or usually we do breed them on our own depending on how well the pokemon feels for doing that.
Though often when one is already related to a prolific trainer as it is, their relative will be the one to provide their first pokemon. Also there are rare, but definitely not unheard of, cases of someone using the family pet as their starting pokemon or even befriending a wild pokemon prior to the time they set off as a trainer. I can say with certainty that when I started, my uncle and my parents both gave me a pokemon, so I actually had two that I already started off with here.
As for Fairy Typing, it has always been there, just like how Steel types were technically always around even before it was ‘discovered’. Just because we add a type to the database doesn’t mean we are making it up and just throwing pokemon there for no good reason. We don’t have that much control over the genetic makeup of a pokemon to make them into new types outside of the unintended effect of outside forces like what has occurred in Holon. But that is besides the point here.
The point is, it requires a lot of time and observations before any type is ever decided to be added for the sake of classifying pokemon. There are many published papers about the research that was done before Steel, Dark, and Fairy types were added to the listing, and thus much of this information came from reading of many of them.
The decision to reclassify existing pokemon to any newly added typing only comes about after far more extensive research and documentation. In fact, a lot of the pokemon that were reclassified into Fairy were pokemon, no one knew quite where to fit them in with the current classifications of the time. Some of them had attributes that felt as if they would belong as psychic types, but there were too many things that also didn’t match up. And thus they had to separate some into psychic and some into normal at the time depending on how close one felt it was to one of the other type. The same went for Steel, back during it’s discovery, a lot of it stemmed from realizing how many pokemon just didn’t quite fit into Electric or Rock at all though at the time those were the two closest types.
In fact, there has been a lot of reclassification of types over the years even. Some of the earliest research documents that had been preserved for centuries talk about how in those days pokemon were only classified as one of 7 types as opposed to the 18 type classifications we have today, and back then the theory that pokemon actually fit into two different type classifications was actually unheard of.
And even now there are still pokemon..and even individual members of a species of pokemon, that exhibit attributes that we still feel don’t even belong in one type or another, which only proves that there are still many things out there that we don’t know about.”
