âAs far as Deanâs concerned, I murdered his little brother Sammy, and I donât love my odds if he catches up to me. I need an advantage. Something he wonât be expecting.â
INTERLUDE (PAST) Â @haesaeyeon
He hovers for a second, hands tracing featherlight over the screen that separates hallway from bedroom. Her silhouette is apparent, softened and faint at the edges with distance. The wedding festivities continue in full swing somewhere in the night, but all other sounds are drowned out, muffled by the throbbing of his heart, blood rush straight to his ears. It's not uncertainty that has him in a standstill outside rather than heading straight in, on the contrary, his state is one where he's fully aware of the situation.Â
Whatever was meant to happen tonight, behind closed doorsâit'd be anything but. He expects that much, despite the unspoken responsibility of consummation that weighs on both of their shoulders.Â
Slowly, he slides the door open, then shut once he's fully inside. His eyes move from the floor to where she sat, gaze unwavering. The air is suddenly all too still, as though the entire room was holding its breath.
"Milady?"
interlude
Even if the subway wasnât his usual choice of commute, the filtered quiet that penetrates through the rail-car interior is nothing short of familiar. The early hours of the morning are cast under pale, blue tinged fluorescent lighting; the weight of the world nearly rocked to slumber by the dull and steady click-clack of the train moving along the tracks. Save for a few others scattered across in their seating arrangement, heâs more or less alone in his innate alertnessâeyes wide open behind thick frames, his attention trained to the glow of his Kindle screen, all else fading into the backdrop. His fellow passengers warranted little to no attention, given how little they appeared to stir, left to tend to the ache that comes with the end of yet another day without so much of a word.Â
But thereâs always a lesson to be learned, even in spaces this isolated, and thatâs to never take anything for granted.Â
Case in point: it takes a single sound to break his attention, The Things They Carried abandoned to arrive at the realization: that someone had passed out on him, head against his shoulder. Heâd been vaguely aware of there being someone who had taken the spot next to himâbut now thereâs everything to take note of; from the slow pattern of breathe in and out, to a face to match a nameâ
Wait a minute.Â
âExcuse me,â He murmurs, as though heâs afraid to disturb the silence. Something about letting sleeping dogs lie could be applied here, but Seunghyunâs almost positive that he knows her, in ways that are nearly unavoidable. He shakes his shoulder gently. âHey.â
( INTERLUDE )
At the table, his fingers reach out for the knot at his collar, tugging once, then twice, as he contemplates his choices for that morning. A full sleeved polyester shirt at the peak of a wet July season, second guessing practically makes itself an inevitability. âFeelinâ under the weather?â A colleague had asked earlier today, handing him a cup of instant coffee. At first he hadnât known how to answer him, not until he weighed his options: 1) To go above and beyond in search of some silver lining, wrap the dark cloud around with something thatâd pass as optimism. 2) Concede for the sake of courtesy, because every nook and cranny of this work space comes with a pass-fail ratio, flip sides of the same coin rationed out, forced down with every tip and fill of a shot glass. Somewhere in between he manages a middle man, ends up rolling out with a hardness thatâs unexpected, assertive even.Â
âI donât really get sick. Not that easily.â
The silence that follows lasts a beat too long for comfort.Â
âAh.â The older manâs expression is neutral, but somewhere in there is that innate disappointment heâs recently become aware of. âIs that so?âÂ
Itâs been out and about on the rumor mill among the higher-ups, Â his âpredictability.â An image that looks pristine when pressed onto the page, and thatâs really what the problem isâit all works, but only on paper. Purely textbook-and-theory, colored solely within the lines, severe in his lack of dimension. His methodology revolves around quantitatives, mechanically sought with a sense of honesty thatâs equally earnest as it is brutal. Itâs hard to believe that heâs considered fresh meat in this field, when the rest of his fellow interns fit the bill to a teeâslick, fast-talking, all fire and brimstone in caliber; forget his SKY university degree, he might as well be a five-to-nine nobody in comparison.
And maybe itâs because of just that that heâs dealt this task; out of a benefit of the doubt, surely thereâs something beyond this abrasive front. Itâs either that or the usual bout of responsibility heâs expected to handle, as the newest addition to the firm.Â
The case, albeit a little hefty, isnât anything that warrants a second look. Drug trafficking and possession, tax evasion, illegal distribution of firearmsâthe guilty charge had come without a blink of an eye. These mafia types had always been predictable, much to his dismay. Now hereâs the tedious part: the processing of fees, handling of property, general preparations. Inside his bossâ office sits the guy, patient and looking like heâs stepped right off the pages of a Schrader scriptă Ąsimultaneously deceptive in the way he blends in as he does stand out. But the kid slouched across from him, at the very table where Doojoon was himself, now that, thatâs a change.Â
The entire dayâs felt like heâs been dragged through the thick as it is. Alternatively: he really, really just doesnât have time (nor patience) for any of this. Nonetheless, his hands are clasped together, resting on the laminate top, and he leans in slightly, brows furrowed. Itâs an attempt to look concerned, really, as part of the job. His true expression however, is one thatâs of muted curiosity.
âYou okay?âÂ
