“I have an extremely important question, sir,” Chanhyun feigned an extremely professional voice--the kind that she was used to using with more difficult clients. She was perfectly aware that this probably wasn’t an ideal first interaction with someone, but stopping someone in the middle of the street was the quickest way to attempt to prove her point to the friend she was texting, through sampled surveys. “Have you ever made a wish upon a star, and if yes, has it ever come true?”

“I don’t want to be that person, especially because I have no idea what you’re doing,” Chanhyun started, voice soft and unsure of what she was doing--approaching strangers cheerfully was normal, but this was just a little bit different. The twenty-five year old girl cleared her throat before continuing, “But, I’m quite sure that isn’t how that works.”

“I think one of the most terrifying things in the world is when you randomly receive mildly depressing song lyrics and don’t realize that it’s a song, Miran!” Chanhyun exclaimed, flushed in mild embarrassment. “I was seriously worried about you!”
Her hands clutched a piece of paper with her scrawling handwriting hastily written across it. Maya’s gaze shifted back up toward the row of books in front of her in the bookstore, searching for one of the few titles that she’d written on her list. Her arrival to New Orleans awhile ago had been full of uncertainty. The last thing she had wanted to do was move to the city with an expectation that she’d be tied to some person she didn’t know. It wasn’t as if she had much of a choice, but it was taking time for her to adjust. In an effort to help, she’d decided to start back over in rebuilding a life. She was still living at the hotel, but she’d done what she could within reason in making it her own little space. The first things to have gone up were the photographs of her grandmother, stuck between the wood frame and mirror of the dresser. She always liked having those pictures close by.
Other than the hotel room, Maya had tried to get the rest of her life back in her control. She found a nice job that paid okay money at a small performance place. It catered to open mics and comedy performances, involved a lot of errand running, and she was always needed to run the ticket desk but it kept her busy. Another effort to get back to normal? Classes. Maya thankfully had gotten her GED since she’d never finished high school and at least with coming to New Orleans she was able to start spring classes. For now though, Maya was only taking two classes. She wasn’t sure she could handle a full load just yet.
“There you are!” Maya exclaimed, finding the book she needed for one of her classes. She stood on her tip toes, the book just out of reach. “Damnit...” she muttered with a roll of her eyes. “Can a wonderfully tall person help me?” Maya called out in question as she turned around.
