Something had happened to the task force, and if Layne was on-site when it was uncovered - Hell’s heart, I really hoped I wasn’t talking about their bodies when I said it, it could be conducive to the mission’s failure. That would be unacceptable.

It was a good call. It’s what I would have done.

But still — “Hell of a position you’ve put me in here, Commander.”

Willian looked back at me, guiltless and unflinching, narrow eyes as dark as the shadows under them. “Deal with it.”

I stared at his back as he marched to the strike teams, a man on a mission, in action and in spirit. It wasn’t like I had much of a choice, standing here in the chalky dirt, watching the moon gleam over the city we were about to invade.
