This poster has always made me catch my breath whenever i look at it. I get chills when I stare ate it. It’s so simple, but there is SO MUCH that’s said.
The way Vader’s shadow looms just behind Anakin, a foreboding spectre that haunts his every step, a grim future that can’t be evaded.
The way Anakin is looking down at his feet while he walks away with his bag, trying to begin a new chapter of his life, but with reservations as he tries to gather his strength.
Perhaps Anakin’s future could have been different. Maybe he could have lived happily ever after with his wife and children, or continued to serve the galaxy as a Jedi. But this poster reminds the viewer that no, Anakin Skywalker is destined to fall, and there is no escaping that fate.
George Lucas wanted to tell us the story of how the Empire came to be, how we arrived at the events of A New Hope. And he wanted to show us how Darth Vader was once Anakin Skywalker.
He he did just that.
