Wait, I had a Facebook.com email address?
I logged into the web version of Facebook today and was greeted with this lovely message:
Stephen, we want to let you know about an upcoming change to your Facebook email address: [email protected].
When someone sends you an email at that address, it will no longer go to your Messages on Facebook. Instead, the email will be forwarded to the primary email address on your account: [email protected]
We're making this change because most people haven't been using their Facebook email addresses, and we wanted to make it easier to view all your emails in one place. Plus, we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone.
First, I had a @facebook.com email address? Wow. I remember a while ago when this launched and was the default display for everyone; I changed it immediately because WTF.
Second, the reasoning behind the forwarding of messages is pretty weak tea. I'm glad they want a place for me to view all of my messages, but there is no setting (that I've been able to find, at least) to disable the auto-forwarding.
So, let's say you want to send someone unsolicited email. Facebook just made it stupid simple:
Find someone's Facebook profile. It's ok if you aren't even friends with this person or they locked their profile! Just to test this out, I typed in Facebook.com/JohnSmith144; Facebook redirected me to /john.smith.144
Send a new message to [email protected] and have it auto-forward to John's primary email address.
