　Love

　Allow me to take a second here to gush about my love for this character.

　It took me a bit to catch a liking on Sou because, well, I’ve never been too big in the trope of characters who sabotage for the sake of making it all difficult, or just for fun, and he was particularly pETULanT THRouGH mOST OF the game―I don’t really hate characters without trying to understand them first though, so while the process did take a little of growing through watching him closely (because ngl, I still couldn’t help but dig his presence and interactions), it wasn’t until right at the beginning of Ch2 pt2 where we were introduced with his dream, that my dislike turned into honest curiosity.

　Now, as you can see, I’m now here after having my attention STUCK on him and having probably over-analysed him since that first play. He was not the kind of character I expected and that struck me with excitement and interest.

　I love his character whole. Quite a lot. He’s full of flaws and grey areas, believes he’s in the right and does things wrong. He’s credibly human and multilayered, and while he’s in his own right to be upset and scared and desperate, he commits many mistakes in both his assumptions and ways to proceed, even though they still were very intelligently thought through. He’s so fucking intelligent but so, so biased. There was no way he’d know he was assuming things wrong unless he’d been proven first-hand that everything he was let know was a tactical manipulation.

　And then there are his (possible) mental and physical illnesses, that are not romanticized and do not excuse his actions, but are still treated with a respectful accuracy.

　I can’t begin to describe how much his character has grown on me and I honestly can’t wait to know more about his background and character in general.

　Hate

　I do not hate anything about his character (aside of his pants), but I do hate a lot of stuff about him as a person: his insistence on quickly assuming things without analyzing his proof a little (obviously a product of his bias), the credibility he gives his ABDUCTORS about survival rates measured so flimsily by a technology that could still bear flaws (although it’s clear that his paranoia has something to do there and we don’t really have know what was told or what happened), the cruel things he does out of pure pettiness and possibly to weaken an enemy that was NEVER really an enemy, his general lying against the group of people who are in the same situation as him, how he treats Kanna at first and in the Second Main Game (though that one was fairly enough an act, but it was cruel on his part), his general dismissal for other’s feelings about the things he does or says (probably avoiding guilt), among SO MANY other things.

　…Not exactly a topic he was particularly keen to talk about, as it brought vivid memories of his first trial, of the shadow that had threatened him and that… detailed explanation, about the accuracy of those percentages shown among the names of candidates. The reminder of that ordeal haunted him already, so having to recap it back to a fresh flashback for someone else only brought him an excess of anxiety. There was surely a reason why he’d destroyed the screen meant for his AI…

　He looked at the question as if it was threatening him with a dagger, but decided to recover enough of his composure to give at least a cold response.

　　❝ …Have you ever heard about the primal rule of “survival of the fittest”? I’d imagine you were likely taught Darwinism in school, isn’t that right?❞  He paused to adjust his scarf a little, eyes turning away while he organized his thoughts logically for a clear response. ❝ Nature has a way to deal with things; all qualified as strong are meant to not only survive, but also feed from the weakest.❞

　His tone was growing colder, bitter. He was not enjoying this conversation, and neither was he thrilled for what was coming up next after having set down the context stage for the stranger.

　　❝ …I was weak, unlikable, and trust far too much and too fast. Naturally, my AI held these pieces of my old self―so when it was put at test, the eventual outcome was for him to die at the hands of those stronger. The ones with the highest rate of won games.❞  Sara was the first to come to mind, since her percentage was the highest out of all. But he didn’t feel like revealing more than he meant to, nor bringing up his rivalries at hand where they didn’t have a space.

　- While we know very little about how and who he really is behind his whole act, I’m one hundred percent sure he’d already shown many snippets of his real personality through unintentional slips. Small as it is, I have a mental picture of how is the real him and, while I could be completely off the mark, I absolutely love it. (We also got nankidai’s doodles. They’re canon for me, ok?)

　- Continuing the thought, it is canon that his real personality was considered “the weak kind”, which implies that he was a much more passive and possibly softer, kinder person. Like it’s obvious that he has a harsh time showing it when his life is at stake on a death game, specially when he firmly believes he successfully “killed” all of his old self, but it is there and there are times it shows. We do see his kindness show here and there, whether people want to see it that way or not. I like the thought of it being a hard contrast to his facade.

　- HE’S ACTUALLY A REAL SOFTIE AND I LOVE IT?? He has such a HUGE soft spot for Kanna and I’m ALL for big brother Sou. He seems to be generally soft-spotted for kind and gentle people, the ones generally staked as “weak”.

　- HIS FAKENESS DURING THE WHOLE GAME KJFJHBHB

　- He’s… mean. I honestly dislike how unnecessarily mean he is sometimes. I do believe it’s part of his act, but it’s still not justifiable and it’s definitely not my favorite part of him.
