At first, it was the age difference and the unattached-ness that attracted her to him. That a senior would be interested in her was thrilling, that he was so untamed, so very devil-may-care, was almost a challenge. She unconsciously wanted to be the reason he settled down – a little lofty of a goal for a fifteen-year-old, but her young and still-romantic heart dreamt herself into a romance. He was very sweet and gentle when they first started dating, secreting her away for movies and dinner, taking her to senior parties. With him, she picked up drinking and smoking – nothing she ever did alone, or even just with him or Jennalynn, only ever at parties. She was giggly but sober when they first had sex. (Years later, she’ll pin that event as the beginning of the downfall of their relationship, though she also recognizes why- that had been all he had wanted.) She ignored his dislike of her friends, threatened break up a couple times over Jennalynn. J would always come first, and if he had a problem with it, he knew where the door was. Once, he did walk out; she cried, said good riddance, and very quickly took him back when he apologized for his outburst. But things kept happening- he’d tell her about a party and not take her, would get too handsy during their movie dates – which were happening less and less often anyway, would talk her into ditching class and never come to pick her up. A couple times he would even leave her behind at parties or other ‘gatherings’ to go out somewhere with his friends – he would always come back for her, but not until she’d started to panic about getting back. Near the end of the school year, she stopped ditching class, and he accused her of having a relationship on the side. She constantly assured him she wasn’t cheating, that he was everything she wanted, but the more she did so, the more she realized she deserved more, deserved better than a neglectful, possessive boyfriend.
