Leta took a deep, harrowing sigh, and in that briefest of moments she looked every one of her 107 years.
“It’s my semblance,” She whispered softly, “Although I didn’t realize that until it actually happened. So long as I have aura, I can possess the bodies of others. I can keep going. At this point, running out of aura... would be a death sentence for me.”
Leta fiddled with her wide-brimmed hat, a remnant of an earlier time. Her whole ensemble was old, if one actually paid attention to it.
“I came to age in Mantle in the midst of the Great War. I wasn’t even called Leta back then. Chara Styx, that was my birth name. I was... what could generously be called a conscientious objector. You know the stories. How Mantle put a ban on emotions. I wasn’t that big a fan of that, and neither was my partner.”
She squeezed her hat so tightly that her knuckles turned white. “We fancied ourselves freedom fighters. Mantle called us terrorists. Long story short, we were captured. We were put before a firing squad. I... died, to put it mildly, but I only had one thought on my mind: saving Hara.”
Leta chuckled bitterly. “I guess in a manner of speaking, I did. Her body, anyway. I’ve been wearing it ever since. But she died that day. She’s gone. I don’t know what did it, whether she was shot or...”
