Eddy is the only one who pushes Double D past his breaking point. Yea, he’s had a small spat here and there with Ed. But Ed also rarely understands what is going on. But Eddy, OH. They argue on the daily. Eddy makes Double D raise his voice and fluster in anger. He even goes as far as getting physical. Which is something that ‘Double D the pacifist’ never does. Ideally, Mister Pacifist would never misuse or misguide Ed in the wrong way. But when Eddy ticks him off, or pushes him a little too far, Eddward will go as far as having Ed grab him and bring him straight back to face his consequences kicking and screaming. Or even nonchalantly dropping Eddy’s spare house key that he so happens to have, right in front of Kevin, so he may act his anger out on Eddy for torturing him when he was grounded, which in turn gives Double D revenge for Eddy tricking him into thinking he was seriously ill. 

It’s only in BPS that we see Double D actually get into a physical fight with Eddy. Fed up by Eddy’s insatiable desire to run scams and completely infuriated that Eddy had tricked him into thinking that both he and Ed were dead, the only people he’s ever sincerely cared about!!!! Eddy knows Double D has a deep attachment for both him and Ed, and doesn’t realize how important it is until it’s almost gone. 

Eddy DOES need Double D. Double D is his conscience, and his best friend. Double D may be ‘the brains’ of the outfit, and brings his scams to life by way of science and knowledge, but he’s also the person who worries about Eddy the most. He’s the one who’s always wiped his tears away and wrapped him up in gauze when he’s seriously hurt. He helps him study and figure out answers to his problems without asking anything in return. And while DD may yap and nag at him, he does listen. Double D will literally sit back and listen to Eddy speak about everything and anything even if he’s wrong. It’s been shown that Double D does have the capability to be accepted into the main clique with the rest of the kids. But who does he stand by through thick and thin? The first friends he ever made.

Double D does need Eddy as well. He’d be a neurotic mess without Eddy. Ed and Eddy are the only ones who know how to handle Double D when he overly stretches himself thin. Double D never stands up for himself, he’s weak physically, and his parents are very neglectful. The only people he has consistently in his life are Ed and Eddy. Which is also important to note that Eddy is one of the only people  that Double D allows himself and Eddy to touch him freely. Even with Ed, despite being his best friend, he’s still shown touching him with gloves, or sterilizing his jacket for a hug. The other children he rarely if ever touches unless they make him. 

Physical affection is as important as sentimental affection, because it releases feel good hormones like Oxytocin in your brain which relieves anxiety, calms your heart rate, decreases blood pressure and decreases the stress hormone Cortisol. and brings out feelings of devotion, bonding and trust. 

So, literally, Eddy is the reason Double D hasn’t completely snapped and shut down entirely because he is the only current source for Double D’s physical affection, ala negligent parents.  

Double D: Worries about the prices of things like restaurants, movies and flowers.

Double D: Never expects anything so he’s always surprised and actually super touched when he receives gifts or anything of the sort.
