a headcanon about my muse
Itâs âMotherâ or âmy motherâ or even âSarikaâ. Impersonal.Removed.
But itâs alwaysâDaddyâ. Ardal died when she was seven, so she still sees him in the gentleinnocence of childhood. Sarika didnât become truly awful until after Ardaldied, so of course she believes if he hadnât died, things wouldnât have gone ashorribly as they did. (Sheâs not wrong.) Most of what she knows of Ardal comesfrom stories from Tierney, and since Tier blames herself for her brotherâsdeath, she refuses to say anything negative about him. There isnât much to say on that front, anyway; Ardalwas a good man.
Sarika is never physicallyabusive with the girls â she doesnât need to be. Brooklyn has never given herreason to turn on her, and so sheâs the safest from Sarikaâs wrath. Brookdoesnât remember Ardal, anyway, so she doesnât have any dreams of âwhat mighthave beenâ. For the most part, Sarika keeps the girls in line with isolationand fear â fear of what she could do, especially after Ravenâssuicide. She has always been shrewd and manipulative, the darker side of whatRose (and her sisters, by extension) are capable of. Sheâs been disowned by herown family for her cruelty; if Rose ever manages to connect with her motherâsfamily, sheâd learn they are nothing like her, and would welcome her andBrooklyn with open arms.
In the same vein, Ardal and Tierney were the anomalies oftheir family. Sarika didnât need to remove the older generation from theestate, didnât need to undermine their credibility. Sarika has the ruthlessnessthe earlier generations prized, that both Tierney and Ardal lacked, as far astheir parents were concerned. (The youngest, Rowan, didnât; which ultimatelyled to his untimely death.) However, by cutting them out of any future, shemade enemies of them, and while Rose was never fond of her grandparents, she still visits them, and occasionallyplots ways to undermine Sarika withthem. (Theyâre the ones who help her figure out how to get the information sheneeds to take Sarika down, not that either of them are above hiring assassinsthemselves. Their grandparents, afterall, were huge in the mob business when it reigned, and the ties are stillthere.)
