Seeing friends thinking up of SHSL OC's made me wanna jump in on the fun so thought up some backstory notes today. No name or design for this guy yet but maybe I'll start doodling ideas soon... Possible triggers under the cut.
SHSL Linguist - Kind of a smart-ass. He's known to be very charismatic and polite, but upon meeting him the protagonist notes how that must have been untrue outside people of authority. Still his snarks are delivered with that calm smile, which add to the annoyance that you probably can't even understand what he's saying. Doesn't help out much during investigations, because of his continued immature trolling of the other students. Bring out a dictionary and he'll just change to another one like no one's business. But if he starts speaking Japanese and properly communicating outside the courtroom, it means he likes you.
He was once genuinely a nice person, if not somewhat of a doormat. He grew feelings for a girl who in reaction to his confession replied she didn't want to be stuck with an "international people-pleaser". Realizing the truth of her statement damaged him, to the point that he started holding everyone at arm's length, and fostering a superiority complex.
Which backfired once he started to grow feelings for one of the students; the one who would become his best friend during their unfortunate school life. A blunt girl, who didn't let him do whatever he pleased. Probably the only one who can break him out of his dancing around speaking Japanese, protagonist aside. He laughed at her teasing that he had a soft spot, but on the inside it made him fearful--and he'd rather die than remember what he used to be like. And also to admit love, for someone who would deserve better than him He struggled with the idea of offing himself, throughout the span of several days.
Even that fateful early morning, as he had the prepared coffee, laced with poison, atop his table, he stared blankly. When to his shock, his friend invited herself in about half an hour earlier than usual. "I'll go make you your coffee." He excused himself hastily, with an instruction not to touch his. He hurried out, unable to face her, and once again thinking if it was right he leave her out of his own selfish desperation.
She tilted her head, laughing a little at the thought he had some kind of special ingredient he wanted to share. So she took just one harmless little sip, then followed him out into the hallway. When he heard a collapsing noise behind him, he rightfully feared the worst.
The poison wasn't lethal enough to be immediate--he took it from the cabinet with the intention of explaining to his classmates he would soon die and nobody murdered him. He took her to her room. She had a few hours.
When she regained consciousness and he explained himself, crying continued apologies, in her weak voice she was still firm; saying that through her passing... he could get out. He was her best friend, after all. The chance shouldn't be missed. He kept his feelings bottled, not wanting to hurt her more. So purposely he lost his last chance to confess anything.
Upon her instruction, with regret, he also left her side so he could make an alibi with the other students, and a scheme to ward suspicion from himself.
He effectively acts as shocked as everyone else, and angry enough to not do his usual shtick of being incomprehensible during the investigation.
"You know... I think in the middle of the trial, I wanted to get caught."
"Nothing's waiting for me outside, anyway. All I had... was a promise that I can't keep. ... Heh. She won't let me hear the end of it. Failing a dying wish of all things. I'm a joke."
"I'll be with her again soon. To the rest of you, my classmates... Sayonara."
