He walks in and activity stops. Hands still on terminals, mouths half open and words choked out. The only one who keeps moving is the Sith lord himself, boots slamming against the metal like heās got a grudge against it, mask hiding his face, gloves halfway up to his elbows wound tight. He moves like a predator and hones in immediately on what he wants and Dane doesnāt bother looking up, just keeps cleaning his rifle like itās nothing to have a Darth stride through and come to a stop before your table.āYou never reported back.āThe room clears. Nevermind the work, theyāre not sticking around to watch this. Theyāve seen something similar, the last Agent Cal decided he was going to use dying a grisly awful death in the middle of the cantina. Nobodyād said a word then, either.āYouĀ receivedĀ your report.ā Daneās pale eyes narrow as he looks up, finally, hair pulled back and tied at the nape of his neck, pale grey skin washed at the cheeks with colour. He doesnāt like anyone saying heās not good at his job and the Darth stares at him from behind the mask, reaches out with the force and breaks his arm.He doesnāt scream. Canāt, with theĀ invisibleĀ hand at his throat and Calās throwing a fuckingĀ temper tantrumĀ again, so Dane kicks out and kicks the mask off him, using the surprise to pull out his blaster and aim it between his eyes. Red, corrupted skin making him so, so pale, cracking the edges of his mouth. Perpetually bloody. Maybe thatās fitting. Thereās going to be a bruise where Dane kicked him in the side of the face.Cal stares, really just stares at him before he nods and turns to leave, waving his hand and knocking Dane back against the wall with a heavy thud, his head cracking against the metal, setting him to seeing stars.āReport in person next time.āDane waits until heās gone to curl around himself, cradle his arm and /swear/.Ā

cal and dane at the neighborhood picnic and barbecue
The invite is probably a mistake, slides into their letterbox at six in the morning only theyāre both up and see it delivered, itās put very deliberately into the mess of letters they havenāt collected in a couple of days so really, itās not a mistake at all.
Itās almost a mistake to go. Calās been in a mood for a week (bruises pepper his arms, his stomach, his thighs and Dane has the warwounds to show how Cal came back wounded) but he cheers up with the prospect of running around terrorising the neighbourhood so Dane rubs a hand through his hair (getting long) and shrugs his shoulders (ouch) and hauls on something closely resembling a normal outfit to go to the stupid picnic.Ā Cal doesnāt bother trying to hide who he is. Itās a part of what makes him so attractive, the way he wears his tattoos, piercings, scars and grin like a fucking armour and Dane pins him against the door with his shoulders on the way out, kisses a line down his jaw and deliberately doesnāt kiss him on the mouth, ducking his arm as he heads out, keys jangling in his hand.āWeāre gonna be late.āāYouāre a fuckhead.ā Calās laughing though, pale eyes narrowed with something close to displeasure and maybe Daneās angling for something later, maybe not. He might just be teasing for the sake of it.Itās clear who invited them when the fifteen year old girls from the nextĀ cul de sacĀ over start giggling at Cal, who walks into the park like he owns the place. Broad shoulders, tight shirt, heās attractive and he knows it, wields it like a weapon and Dane doesnāt even bother trying to stop him. Cal winks and charms them with half a smile and Dane steers well clear of theĀ barbecue, the flames pinging at something in the back of his mind and Calās arm around his waist has him distracted, his fingers pressing under the line of his jeans between his shirt and his boxers, just holding him there.Ten minutes later and Daneās getting drinks, avoiding well meaning assholes and the ones that avoid them, the ones that want to pick a fight. Calās hitting on the girls, charming and rude and brash and everything that attracts a young girl in so Dane smacks him upside the head with the beer he brings back, drops it into his lap and flops down onto the grass beside them, moving like a wounded man and not bothering to hide it.Ā āCal.āāBuzzkill.ā He smiles as he says it, warm and a little edged and when Cal leans over to kiss him Dane doesnāt protest. Doesnāt say a word when Cal manages to convince someone heās Irish, doesnāt catch him on the lie when he says heās invested in miniskirt futures and Calās a fucking mess but heās a beautiful mess, moves people like chesspieces and Dane, well. He could watch him all day. Does as a matter of fact, ignoring friendly and not so friendly overtures in favour of Cal, the line of his mouth and the broad sweep of his hand and the accidental way (not accidental at all) he brushes against the women and challenges the men. he draws attention like gunfire and Daneās Ā back twinges at that. He feels it down to his bones.Cal hands him another beer, brushes his hand over the top of his head and crowds into his space. Pulls him into his lap, one broad, tanned arm around his waist and Dane goes because he has no reason not to, sprawls against him like a lazy, well fed dog and curls his fingers around his wrist.āTaking a break?āāNah.ā Teeth, pressed against his throat and Dane doesnāt bother to hide the way he leans back into it because how can he? They get another flier in the mailbox next month and itās Denise, meddling old fuck, but she winks at Cal and sketches Dane a mocking salute so he stomps on her hedge later and pretends he didnāt see the tree foot high monstrosity when she calls him on it.Ā
SUPER LENGTHY CAL SHEPARD AND DANE SHEPARD MODERN AU NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS FIC THING, for asariboyfriend just because, and also because she is having a shit morning so maybe it can make her feel a bit better I DUNNO.
--------------------------------
"That's it. That's fuckin' it, I am done," Dane stood up, hip bumping against the ugly kitchen table he'd had for too many years, had already run into too many times and he'd have a bruise, probably; was too pale not to but whatever, who cares, because-- "I'm done. He's done. We're done."
He'd never met the guy, his neighbor, the Neighbor, actually The Neighbor was most accurate because the fuck deserved capital Ts and Ns and giantĀ capitalsĀ F and U taped to his forehead because he'd only moved in a week ago and already the surroundings were in uproar. A soldier, they said-- ex-military, scarred and tattooed and pierced and were you even allowed to have piercings in the corps, was that even a thing and oh how far America had fallen, kids these days. That was to be expected, really, living in a primarily middle to upper class all-white cookie cutterĀ suburb with more people in their mid to late fifties than anything else, and from what Dane had heard, the new guy hadn't even been fazed. Had turned down what little help was offered and had whistled at somebody's teenage daughter as she bent over the hood of her father's car, windshield and her own chest lathered in soap and though Dane did his best to avoid gossip, Mr. Declan had been seen spotting a black eye and a split lip on more than one occasion so it was impossible to assume things hadn't worked out in his favor.Ā
Score one for The Neighbor, Dane supposed-- the Declans were asses and hell, they could get a capital A for it, if Dane thought long and hard enough and really, everybody in the whole fucking neighborhood could've been improved by a harsh right hook because judging by their attitudes, they'd been the bullies inĀ high school. They'd gone to college and university on the coattails of rich parents who could afford it, had gone their whole lives without some of the shit Dane had seen, some of the ways he'd been treated.Ā
Maybe, he'd thought, maybe this new guy, this ex-soldier or whatever he was, maybe he was just what they'd needed: some untamed external force of nature to come in and blow them all away, knock over the ones who deserved it and spare those who didn't.Ā
That had been before the sawing started.Ā
Dane still had a military sleep pattern himself, even though he'd been stateside for almost a decade, hadn't held a rifle in even longer, not after-- after all the shit that'd happened, his unit, all the blood, so much, too much and Dane's still fucked up on some days, a little less fucked up on others and he knows that's as much as he can ever ask for. So he wakes up early, ridiculously early by the standards of Normal People but 4 o'clock in the morning was pushing it. 4 o'clock was just not right and Dane had thought it was gunfire, gunfire and grenades and bombs and he'd woken up sweating-panting-terrified and rolling beneath the bed hadn't happened quickly enough to prevent a panic attack. Forearms braced against dark wooden floor, white muscle shirt clinging to the small of his back, sweat beading down the side of his face and it had taken almost six minutes before he realized what it actually was:Ā
Construction work. Or-- something, something like that, sawing and hammering and welding and whatever else and Dane had rammed his shoulders up and into the underside of hisĀ bed frame with such rage he swore he'd go outside and murder whoever thought this was okay.Ā
Hell, it wasn't even legal, doing that shit so early in the morning and it'd gone on for too many fucking days and the problem was, anybody who'd gone to The Neighbor's garage had come back more unnerved by the man than before and Dane really was beginning to worry. PTSD could be severe, could be dangerous, could be destructive but he wanted to believe anyone affected by the ailment that severely wouldn't be allowed to live alone, but-- he wanted to go, on his own. Just to be safe, before someone else went and said, did the wrong thing and walked away with something worse than just a bloodied mouth.
It was just a little past noon and he'd had enough, the sound of saw against wood driving him up and over and wall and over and across his lawn, shocked that the most he'd ever seen of the guy had been the back of his head and a peculiar tattoo that laced down his neck and that was it, even if they lived literally atop each other.Ā
The garage door was rolled up and Dane took a deep breath, steeled himself, balled his fists at his side before walking in because he wasn't the greatest at social interaction, not anymore, let alone open confrontation but if somebody had to, then he'd-- he'd do his best.Ā
Even if that was rarely, if ever, anywhere even close to good enough.
The guy's back greeted him, broad shoulders and far too many tattoos, more ink than skin and-- yeah, Dane could see why people had a tendency to not want to approach him. He didn't exactly exude friendly. "Hey," he barely heard himself over the heavy metal blaring from The Neighbor's obnoxious speakers, let alone the clang of metal and hiss of woodcutting that had been waking Dane up for the better part of too goddamn long. "Hey, I'm talking to you--"Ā
Finally, he turned, and Dane was struck dumb.
Tall, taller than Dane and thicker, more muscular, the kind of build that frightened people in street fights and wrestling matches and that wasn't even what hit Dane the hardest; eyes so pale blue they might have been grey but that wasn't, still wasn't the thing he noticed most because it was what was behind the ex-soldier's gaze that had Dane's chest seizing up.Ā
There wasn't even a hint of really anything behind his eyes. Not surprise, not annoyance, not regret. Nothing. They weren't the eyes of a dead man, but the eyes of a man who'd seen too much death, too many dead and the fire of war still burned inside of them, not snuffed out, not for a moment, not even when he blinked and even without a piece of equipment in his hand that could've easily been turned into a weapon, Dane still would've been intimidated.
That still wasn't the thing, though. The intimidation part of it because Dane spent too much time being scared of everything to focus much on it because he was fixated, drawn to the guy, to the tanned skin barely hidden by a tattered old t-shirt, to the centipede tattoo (so that's what it is) that wriggled down from the back of his ear to god knows where else, to the barbel in his left eyebrow and the rings that lined both of his ears, to the patchwork of scars from forehead to jaw and back again and Dane knew he was staring and fuck it, he couldn't stop. Couldn't much remember why he'd come here, either, except he knew he'd come back, just-- just for another chance to look.Ā
"Yeah. I can see that. S'that a trick you just learned?"Ā
"What?" Dane snapped out of it, if only for a second but oh shit, his voice was like the sweet side of sandpaper and it was the way he spoke, on top of it all, the rude, cold intonations that had Dane fighting back every single urge to just turn and run because he was in over his head, this was not going well.
"Talking. Is that a new trick the old dog just learned that I'm supposed to give a fuck about, or did you actually come here to say something to me?" He dropped the saw, wiped grease onto his brow and down his neck and Dane would've given his left testicle to just stop gawking oh my god just stop he's probably gonna come beat you up--
"I was--"
"You came to say something about the noise, right?" The Neighbor stepped forward and Dane stepped back, just a little, just enough to make the other guy grin at him in a way that made Dane feel sick and hot all at once. "You aren't the first. Not gonna be the last, either. You can take it up with the mayor or theĀ governorĀ or the president-- climb as high as you want, if you think it'll help. This is my therapy, alright? It's either this, or I go shoot pigeons in the neighborhood kiddie park, and I don't think that's gonna go over too well with all the sweet little mommies and daddies. So, yeah, I appreciate you coming all the way over here to tell me to stop waking you up at the ass crack of dawn but I do this when I'm halfway-fuckin' tempted to go wring somebody's neck because of the shit I went through overseas. Long story short, asshole," he finally paused, so close to Dane that his breath ghosted across the shorter man's face, "get the fuck off my property before I hang you up on a hook and call you my pretty new punching bag."
He smelled like cigarettes and whiskey and sex and Dane wanted to bite him, to bite his lips, could hear a click-click-click of something metallic tapping against his teeth (pierced tongue holy fuck--), wanted to say something clever, say anything at all, to egg him on and cool him off all at once and Dane couldn't remember the last time he'd felt this much of anything and he was-- shit, he was overwhelmed, needed to leave--
"-- I just came over to ask if I could borrow some sugar."
It was out of his mouth before he had the chance to think, the chance to not say it and it was a lie, a lie right through his goddamn teeth and the laugh he got in return was borderline warm, the man leaning back to rest against a cabinet, tattooed arms folding across his chest. "... Is that so. Sugar. You came here to get sugar."
"Yeah."
He snorted, hand digging into his pocket to fish out a set of keys. "Okay, you fucking weirdo. Let's go get you some sugar." It was only a few steps to the door, to the inside of The Neighbor's house and Dane had no idea what he was doing or whether or not he should even follow or if he should take the chance and just run the opposite way, put his house up for sale and forget the entire thing ever happened-- "Name's Cal, by the way. Nobody in the neighborhood's bothered to ask, so I figured I might as well tell the person who seems least retarded. What's your name, sugar boy?"
Sugar boy, Jesus Christ. Save me.Ā "Dane."
So The Neighbor's name was actually Cal and he really was ex-military and he actually did keep sugar in the cupboard and Dane stayed for a beer that turned out to be seven and Cal kept him awake all night not for the first time but for the first time that involved Dane being the noisy one.Ā
dawnheraldĀ replied to yourĀ post:Ā for fucks sake jay I canāt take much more of this...
Cal and Dane talking about settling down somewhere but itās only because theyāre both about to die because the ship theyāre on is blowing up
"Omega, maybe."
"Nah. Too many people."
Cal's bleeding out. It's slow, an insidious sort of cold creeping up his spine and Dane's missing arm is sparking, the fingers of his other hand twitching involuntarily. It's bad enough they're all fucked up but the ship is still chasing them, their own not fast enough to get away.
Dane shoves a couple of commands in, grateful it's not the Normandy. He couldn't imagine killing EDI with all this bullshit.Ā
"Not Mindoir." Dane winces, and Cal flashes him something close to an apologetic smile. "You'd hate it there."
Laughing quietly, Dane nods, his mouth sliding down at the left as the cybernetics start to shut down. He's got a few moments, maybe. Half another breath.
He doesn't bother taking it, flipping the ship instead and setting it on a collison course. Might as well take the bastards down with them.
Cal takes a wet, sucking breath and reaches his hand out, Dane's twitching fingers caught between his own, the centipede tattoo winding around his wrist stark and slick with blood.
"Tuchanka. I like Tuchanka."
Dane gets an N7 tramp stamp tattoo while possibly drunk and Cal laughs himself sick
"You got a what-"Dane's laughing at himself, lower back stinging in the air as Cal drags his shirt up and there it is, still bleeding a little and Dane's so drunk he can't see straight but he bends back, tattoo scrunching as he presses a warm, heavy kiss to Cal's cheek."Needed you closer to my ass," he says, laughs and squirms and swears when Cal gets his mouth on him and there's no way that's sanitary but then he's down lower and fuck, fuck a talented mouth was only half of what he could do.Maybe he'd get the next tattoo on his dick.Ā

He takes a backseat to his own life, eventually. Cal's problems are massive and Dane's got nothing but a failed journalistic career and an even bigger military failure behind him. Mindoir, Akuze, everything goes wrong and it's always when he tries to take charge of his own life so he doesn't, anymore. He lets Cal tell him where to go and who to talk to and with instruction, he's great. With instruction, he's effective. With instruction, he's choking on himself and his history and the knowledge that no matter what they do, someone's going to die before this is over.
He doesn't hold Cal down, doesn't even try, an ache in his jaw on the cold days testament to what would happen if he did. Cal's vicious and cruel and exactly what they need right now so Dane takes a backseat to that, too.
"What do you want?" Cal asks one day and Dane stares at him, can't comprehend the question.
"What does anyone want?" Deflection, diversion and Cal just snorts at him, grabs his hand and twists until Dane's sitting on the couch next to him, tangled in his lap.
"I didn't ask what anyone wanted." His wrist aches but Cal's gentle, eyes narrowed, centipede tattoo creeping up towards the underside of his jaw. He's rough around the edges, tilts his head down when Dane slides his fingers along the scar at his scalp, doesn't say a word as he follows the ones on his face, the red cybernetics leaking through, casting his already pale hand with a ghostly, hellish glow.
"I want you to win." It's apparently the right thing to say and Dane drowns on the lie, in the lips on his own, the hands at his waist and the knowledge that if Cal asked, he'd die for him in an instant.Ā
Love is cruel, Cal is cruel and Dane's going to be kind enough for them both.Ā
things cal shepard is/has, some of which i cannot give him in game:Ā
he's 6'3, pushing 6'4.
he's pretty much covered in tattoos,
even after cerberusĀ rebuilds him, what tattoos he lost he either has re-done
or gets new ones where old ones used to be.
his most famous/easily recognized is the centipede that starts behind his left ear and travels down his neck, loops around his spine and comes to rest on his right hip.
he has a tongue ring--Ā
it's the only piercing he didn't remove after enlisting.Ā
though he wears his more intimate piercings for special occasions.
he's a diagnosed sociopath, so there's a lot of times the in game dialogue is OOC
i either headcanon it out or imagine he's just sort of "going through the motions" so he doesn't wind up facing a bazillion military psychologists.
which usually happens anyway. like after torfan.Ā
he travels with a shotgun and that's it.Ā
seriously.
it's all a vanguard really needs.Ā
he doesn't classify himself as straight or gay or bi or pan,
he doesn't give two fucks about sexuality because to him it's a situational thing,
because he's a giant racist asshole but that doesn't stop him from falling for a turian.
