they say that the place is haunted by demons. that there are malevolent spirits there that want only to feed on the souls of the living. but they aren’t—at least, they don’t mean to be. it’s just—they loved her. they would have done anything for her and she abandoned them, threw them away like trash when they were too broken for her. their grief changed them, turned them into—into whatever they are. no one really knows. but most know one thing: if you enter that place, they will make sure you stay with them forever.

magic is neither good nor evil, but they thought themselves good. maybe not good, but certainly not evil. they are not so sure of that now. in the end, they wanted power and blood—blood is powerful. unsuspecting travelers spilled into their spells and potions in a flow of never ending red and their magic became something else—something dark and corrupted and, yes, very powerful.

she was beautiful. they all were. his creations even more so, wasted on the mannequins as they were. they deserved better, deserved skin and curves. a body. they were easy enough to find. he kept pieces of them after. displayed them like art as he did his creations. they deserved it just as much, he thought. he was…sentimental, like that.

the feeding is not the fun part, it’s the chase. it was music, the quick footsteps over dead leaves, the pattering of their weak little hearts, and the screams — oh the screams. after centuries it’s always the same, but it never loses the thrill.

they had to be perfect. no simple plastic and metal would do. he needed flesh, living and breathing parts encased in steel bone. their eyes, their faces, every finger was carefully selected and the original monstrosities they were pulled from discarded. until his very last breath he would mold them, make them in his image—their creator, their god.
