“Ah, forgive me for not being more forthwith. I am a sword–or perhaps it would be more precise to say that I am the spirit of a sword. The Hachisuka Kotetsu, of course.” The uchigatana placed his hand on the hilt at his left side, the small part of his true self that was plain for the world to see. “I was summoned into the world by my master–though I don’t believe he intended for me to be swept into this realm so suddenly.”
“A blade given human form...” Briefly, his eyes followed Hachisuka’s movement, to the blade at his hip. There was a certain beauty to it, actually, the idea of a sword being the one to wield himself, as it were. “Both curious and impressive, I must say. Though I imagine it must be a great disappointment to find yourself even farther removed from your given purpose...” To that, he shook his head. “But I suppose that applies to most of those trapped here.”

Pushing his ways through the streets of the Hive was starting to become frustratingly commonplace. There were no answers to be found here–at least, not one that he cared for. There was nothing that got him any closer to returning from whence he came and letting him get back to his mission. It was infuriating beyond compare.
There had already been a number of people in this maze of a prison who had attempted to reach out to him. Some of them had been faintly familiar, but most were faceless dredges that tried to attack him from the shadows–distractions, at most. He wanted to ignore them but they seemed to be everywhere he turned, each more annoying than the last. He wanted this latest voice to be yet another of them.
But this voice was one of the ones he recognized. How could he forget it?
It was impossible. A hallucination. It had to be. Nothing else made sense.
Yet, when he dared to turn behind him and see, there stood a painfully clear reminder of what he longed to return to.
“What trickery is this,” he whispered. “First, these cowards think to drag me from my mission and throw me into this bedlam of a prison, and now they assault me with the phantoms of those I have lost? They only dig their graves all the deeper.”
Hanbei had to stop himself from smirking, ever so slightly. Not because of Mitsunari’s clear distrust, but because there was no longer any doubt that this was the genuine article. More than that, the young man’s hushed words confirmed what the tactician never truly could; he had, in fact, died. There was no two ways about it.
But that was a reality to think on another day. For now, he could do little more than shake his head. Mitsunari was right to be skeptical, after all.
“I have no doubt your revenge will be swift, when the time comes. However... consider for a moment, if I were who I appear to be.” He sighed, casting an off glance in the general direction of the city’s core. “What kind of men must they be, refusing to let the dead lay to rest.”
Was it an argument? Surely, but not as to whether or not he was genuine. Instead, on the already questionable character of their captors. Was he angry to be alive again? Hardly, but that did not change the nature of the whole affair, either.
“Perhaps the larger crime, however, is leaving Hideyoshi without either hand to lean upon.” At that thought, he visibly frowned. “A reality I never thought I might live to see with my own eyes.”

Anghel was half a second into brandishing the fork he’d plucked off the snack table when he saw the face of his unknown assailant.
“Lavender Tactis Florashrouder… you have returned?!”
It was all he could do to hide his excitement – well, he couldn’t, really. Hanbei was greeted with a wide smile, and wider eyes.
But surely, this was no time to celebrate their reunion.
“I am thankful for your presence here – a great battle has yet to be fought, on this Eve of Gathering Stars.”
“The White Warlocks lurk in this place… it will not be long before their wicked plot is set in motion.” He gestured at the ceiling, where the white star at its center had slowly begun to grow. “When the Great Star falls, peril shall befall all who remain here… I am certain of this. They have cast a Limit Seal, in order to keep us from rebelling. Do you not feel it siphoning your mana?”
“And… I am not bleeding!”
Anghel covered the side of his head with one hand, clearly hiding something.
“Fear not for me, Lavender Tactis Florashrouder. There are far more grave matters at hand. We must act quickly.”
Hanbei just smiled, letting Anghel speak of plots and turmoil. The boy certainly had an imagination, and one that he had found to be quite entertaining. His head tilted slightly, following the gesture to the stars overhead. Mere decorations, of a flamboyant sort, he figured, but the child’s accusation was something.
Besides, he was undoubtedly right about one thing.
“Unfortunately, yes. I can feel this place restricting me even more than usual. A logical precaution, for such a gathering... irritating as it may be.”
He elected to ignore the obvious show of hiding a would, though. For the moment, it was likely minor. Besides... this could prove interesting.
“Just what course of action did you have in mind?”
“Consider it a compliment.”
She nudged her tea cup forward at his offer, the white curve of her tail waving idly behind her.
“Your blend reminds me of my home in the Far East. I suppose I am helpless to resist it.”
“It’s one I learned long ago, in my own home.” He chuckled quietly, more than happy to carefully refill her cup when it was near enough. “I do wonder if our homelands truly are similar, the more I hear of yours.”
But that was of little consequence. Rather than lingering on it, he took a sip from his own teacup.
“Truthfully, I was impressed to find this place had the means to recreate it. Perhaps this city is not so hopeless, after all.”
“I quite agree. Too bad there seems to be a lack of those that share the sentiment, present company excluded, of course. In all honesty, I never would have imagined I’d find such a like-minded individual in a human, of all things. Wonders never cease, I suppose.”
“You’ll find humans come in all kinds, some better than others, as you can see.”
“Forgive me if it’s rude to wonder, though... but if not a man, then with what manner of being am I speaking?”
☆ “I’m fine. It’d take a lot more to injure me.”
“Good. I would hate to find one so frail as that. Still... perhaps you could find somewhere less inconvenient next time?”
