This is historic. Here is the oldest surviving, complete and available footage of Bowie playing live – although it is a bit of an oddity! While we have some film of Bowie and The Hype playing live at the Atomic Sunrise Festival in March 1970, it is held by a private collector, only some extracts have been shared, and it is not clear if the sound that accompanies the visuals exists. And while there is earlier footage still of Bowie on German TV from late ’69, it is him miming to the Space Oddity single.  But this is live, and it is complete. It comes from the 1970 Ivor Novello Awards. The 15th Ivor Novello Awards were presented by the Songwriters Guild of Great Britain on 10 May 1970 at Talk of The Town; and broadcast on TV in the USA, on TV across mainland Europe via local channels, but only on BBC Radio in the UK. Bowie received the Special Award for Originality for his single from late 1969, Space Oddity. For the show, Bowie performs the song live with his acoustic guitar, accompanied by the show’s orchestra. This version of the song thus has a kind of big band feel, with its own atmosphere, very different from the single or indeed the original version created for the Love You Till Tuesday video film. The stylophone is there though, the electric guitar for lift-off is a blitzkrieg, and the song ends with the brass section at full force. Bowie himself is charming, all smiles and laughter, his Space Oddity hairstyle growing out (he is in the middle of recording The Man Who Sold the World album), and kitted out in a Mr Fish shirt with salmon pink trousers! Awesome.
