Unfunny joke: "lol that cake will give you diabetes"
Funny joke: the diabetes healthcare that my hospital provides me
fyi things like insulin, hearing aids, wheelchairs, glasses costing money at all is a form of structural ableism
disabled people should not have to pay to live their lives like everyone else. and in the case of insulin, disabled people should not have to pay to Not Fucking Die

Them: oh you're a diabetic? I could NEVER give myself shots everyday.
Me:
Even if your condition is chronic and your symptoms won't ever go away, your life as a whole can still get better. Whether it's through finding better coping strategies, more effective treatment, a better support network, through knowing yourself, your needs and your limits better, through accessing more accommodations or through discovering new passions, your life can and will improve even if your condition itself won't. I promise.
this :â)
idk telling people im diabetic just feels so weird, I cant get myself to accept it being a disability for myself despite ending up in bed far more often than i want to and constantly having to manage things in order to feel even close to normal, accepting it as a disability at this point just feels like I'm admitting weakness or that i might be complaining about something when it's *actually* not that big of a deal. just a vent you can delete if you'd like
Hey sorry for replying so late, but I totally hear where youâre coming from. I think both the words âdisabledâ and âdiabeticâ carry so much negative stigma around them that itâs understandable that you feel odd about it. I consider myself disabled, personally, but even still I often feel uncomfortable saying that to certain people because I donât think they understand the depth of managing diabetes and what it does to your body. Itâs a hard topic, but the way I look at it is if no one challenges the perception of diabetes as not being that big of a deal, then people will continue to see it that way and other diabetics will continue to feel like they arenât justified in being really worn down sometimes. If you donât feel comfortable with it though, donât beat yourself up about it. Identity can be so personal and emotional that youâve really just gotta let yourself live your truth. Anyway thatâs just my thoughts on this, hopefully you got something from it!

I need able-bodied psychiatrized people to stop derailing posts that are explicitly about physical disability to try and make it about yourselves.
While a lot of our issues can overlap, so often you all add âthis applies to mental health too uwuâ to shit that applies almost exclusively if not entirely to physical disability only.
Even when it can potentially apply to you too, can you ever let us have anything? Sometimes we want to talk about ourselves to each other only. Sometimes, things arenât about you.
Iâm not some NT or whatever speaking about this, by the way. Iâm a multiply psychiatrized person too, on top of having multiple chronic illnesses.
Also a lot of the time physically disabled people are much better educated on psychiatrized conditions than you all ever are on physical disability, by far â in part because most of us are psychiatrized too along with our physical disabilities. You guys barely ever know what youâre talking about when you talk about us and our conditions but act like youâre experts.
You all constantly throw us under the bus too, even when we havenât said anything anyway, so itâs rubbing salt on the wound. A good example is you assuming physical disability and chronic illnesses are taken soooo seriously unlike whatever psychiatrized conditions you have when thatâs a hilarious, ridiculous lie, and try to use us to further your own agendas.
Let us have something for ourselves for five minutes, please. Itâs not always about you.
This post is rebloggable. I encourage reblogs.
Disabled dark humor between disabled people
The one healthy person listening in:
(Visual ID: the first picture is of a guy laughing, the picture is edited to make it look slightly broken or glitchy. The second photo is of a girl who has been edited to look extremely uncomfortable and shocked. End ID)
trying out a new coloring method + feelinâ feelings about being disabled = this! iâm proud of it :)
[image description: 2 photos of the same drawing, one with a black background, the other with a red one. A digital drawing of a light-skinned person with short brown hair looking down. Theyâre holding an insulin syringe in one hand up by their face, and on the other hand is a medical alert bracelet. They are also wearing a red crop top with rolled sleeves, showing a CGM and an insulin pump with curling tubing. There is a blue diamond behind them. End of description.]

Wait what are non diabetics using diabetic tech for?
Yep, there's a tech start up called Levels that's pushing cgm use for weight loss... Buncha tech dudebros are bragging about them like they are the new Fitbit. They use them to make their disordered eating more elitist and bitch about how uncool they look and how much they hurt as primary problems that need solving. Rage inducing...
Just a reminder that Frederick Banting, discoverer of the process to synthesise insulin, sold the patent for $1 because it was so important to him that it be widely available and easily mass produced. Yes, you should be angry.
