Throwback Thursday

So, I’ve been lagging in my personal video editing, as I’ve been dealing with some medical and physical issues. In the interim, till I get out of this rut, I’ve been going through and organizing old video files. 

Today, I found a folder of old proprietary files from my Sony camcorder. Besides recording video, the facial recognition feature prompts the camera to capture still images. This one was from a family reunion at my mother-in-law’s house in 2010. Drew’s uncle, aunt, and cousin came to town; his ex-wife and stepdaughter--being then-neighbors of Drew’s mom--attended as well, along with my mom who was visiting me at the time. 

This photo is a bittersweet one. I remember the day being unnecessarily stressful, thanks to behaviors displayed by Drew’s ex, but it was also fun. I had a blast visiting with Drew’s family and watching them sing karaoke. I am grateful to have this video, especially since so much has changed in the last seven years. It’s a nice memory to have, a pleasant reminder of my mother-in-law and her brother having a ball singing karaoke. It’s been nearly five years since Drew and I have seen either one, and photos like this reminded me how much we miss our loved ones.

Reevaluting What I Want to do with My Life

These days, I haven’t spent much time focusing on photography. Not for a lack of desire, mind you; however, opportunity to expand my videography skills came along, and I took it.

Last summer, thanks to my husband, I was asked to serve as a camera operator on a public access television program. We filmed over several days last summer, and I subsequently ended up assisting with editing the show last fall.

Since then, I’ve been volunteering my time with our local public television studio, mostly as a camera operator. (I’ve also hauled gear, helped with setups, monitored audio, and edited footage.) I’ve filmed many things from sports, galas, lectures, talk shows, and personal interest stories.

Naturally, all this television work has eaten into time devoted to still photography. And, upgrading to a subpar D300 hasn’t helped either. I haven’t abandoned photography at all; I consider it a hiatus.

Since I was a teenager, I’ve wanted to work in film, and this is the closest I’ve gotten to that dream. Even on the hard days--when I’m pain, the weather doesn’t cooperate, things don’t go as expected--I’ve enjoyed every moment I’ve spent working in television. I’ve built upon my existing skills acquired filming weddings, and there is so much more to learn. 

The best part is, I get to work with a group of talented individuals. They have all been incredibly helpful, and we always manage to have fun.

So, regardless how long my work in television continues, I plan to enjoy every moment. And I do intend to return to photography at some point. For now, television is where I need to be.
