kuroko no basket — okinawan summer !
synopsis ; summer break. after a few rough months of university, spending a bit of time with your grandma in nagahama, a small coastal city in okinawa should be good for the soul... and ressourcing. and somehow, spending time with your grandma came with a local surfer, the mayor's son, the beach’s lifeguard, an ice cream guy, the shrine helper, as well as the bug-chasing dude and the part timer of the tourism's office. yeah... definitely good.
aomine daiki — the local and very cocky surfer !
— aomine daiki is the local surfer, emphasis on local. this is his beach, his water and his rules. and, he acts like the ocean personally belongs to him.
— on your first day in nagahama, your grandma sent you to the beach with exactly one towel and 2000¥, with vague instructions like “don’t drown” and “say hi to satsuki"
— you did not know who satsuki was.
— daiki had been surfing since he was like… ten. you only met him because you obviously sat where he’d always left his board on the sand for the past ten years.
— one moment, you were trying to avoid the sharp shells under your towel, the next this tall, loud and absolutely fucking sexy guy is towering over you. “Oi, you’re stupid or something ?”
— …went from 10/10 to 5/10 in an instant. you tell him to go learn manners, he tells you to go back to the city if you can’t handle locals.
— satsuki is delighted. like, genuinely.
— she’d been bored since the beginning of summer (5 days to be exact) and now, this city girl was beefing with her childhood best friend on day one ? cinema.
— she’s the one who explained that you were staying with your grandma.
— daiki softens for exactly two seconds, because he knows which grandma that is. everyone does. she gives him fruits sometimes, and he pretends not to care.
— he doesn’t apologize. just squints and goes “…hm, figures.”
— he thinks you’re stuck-up, overdressed, and absolutely not built for island life.
— despite that, he keeps noticing you.
— keeps noticing how you keep coming back to the beach every afternoon even tho you rarely swims, how you always sit far away from the water to stay dry, how your skin starts tanning despite how you drown yourself in sunscreen.
— you notice him too. how everyone knows him ; kids, fishermen, aunties who yell at everyone and everything.
— the banter becomes part of your routine.
— he steal your parasol, you steal his towel. he splashes you on purpose, you dump sand on his board "by accident".
— neither of you back down, neither of you walk away.
— daiki is loud, cocky and way too confident. unfortunately, he has the skills to back it up. watching him surf is infuriating because unlike him, you suck.
— so, naturally, he offers to teach you. not kindly, of course.
— lessons with him are horrible ; he's a terrible teacher. he laughs when you fall, yet cheers when you manage to stay up for more than 5 seconds on the board.
— sometimes, when the beach quiets down, he get calmer too. he sits beside you instead of towering, watches the waves without any comments.
— daiki doesn't do heavy talks, doesn't dissect and explains his feelings. nothing dramatic happens : no big realization, no confession under the stars.
— by the end of summer, arguing with him feels like routine, something you'd miss back at uni. it just becomes normal : meeting him at the beach, trading insults, sharing his board and laughing too loudly.
— and honestly ? he wouldn't have it any other way.
kagami taiga — main beach’s over responsible lifeguard !
— kagami taiga is stationd at the main beach all summer, sunburned within the first week, like every year, and greatly annoyed about it too.
— like always, he takes his job super seriously, his whistle never leaving his side, just like his posture is always alert.
— you met him because he yelled at you, not aggressively but more urgently. you'd wandered a little too far out in the water, distracted, and suddenly a voice rang out, cutting through the sound of the waves.
— "HEY, don't go past that point !"
— ...you listened, mostly because he looked more worried than bossy. he relaxed a litte when you came back, and muttered something about currents.
— taiga is blunt, honest to a fault and terrible at subtlety. if he thinks something is dangerous, he says it. if he thinks you're doing fine, he says so too.
— he checks in on you. a lot.
— you start timing your beach visits around his shifts. purely coincidental, obviously.
— when you're starting your surfing lessons with a certain blue-haired surfer, he watches from his tower like an hawk. he doesn't interfere unless he has to, and he's proud when you manag to stand on the board for the first time, even to he tries not to show it.
— off-duty, taiga is awkward as fuck. he still caries himself like he's responsible for everyone in a fifty-meter radius, and he doesn't know what to do with his hands when he's not holding a whistle.
— despite that, conversations with him are easy : he asks quetions, actually listens and laugh out loud without any filters when you tease him.
— he walks you to your grandma's house after late afternoons "just in case", and then pretends it's nothing.
— you let him believe that.
— he's competitive in a friendly way : races you to the water when he's off duty, dares you to stay under longer and complains when you win.
— locals trust him, parents wave at him and kids idolize him. he pretends not to care even tho he 100% does.
— taiga doesn't overthink his feelings. if he likes spending time with you, he just does. by the end of summer, he's a constant : someone you expect to see, someone who expects to see you back.
— nothing has to end, nothing has to be decided : it's just a good summer, and he's part of it.
kuroko tetsuya — the local shrine’s helper !
— kuroko tetsuya helps out at the small shrine tucked away from the main road. not the tourist spot kind of shrine, the local only type.
— wind chimes, worn steps and shades spots that always feel cool than everywhere else.
— you don't notice him at first, like genuinely. you're focused on the shrine, the silence and the way the air feels different here. then he speaks.
— nearly gives you an heart attack.
— tetsuya is soft-spoken, calm and so stills he blends into the background. he moves lik he doesn't want to disturb anything, neither the air or the moment.
— he asks if you'd like to draw an omikuji. explains the process slowly, clearly. he doesn't rush ou, nor does he watch too closely.
— you start visiting the shrine more often. sometimes with a reason, sometimes just because.
— tetsuya remembers you immediately. your face, your name, the fact that you prefer the shaded bench instead of the steps.
— he helps clean the shrine in the mornings, sometimes with your help, the others times without.
— he offers you iced tea once, then again. and by the fourth time, it becomes a part of you guys' routine. you sit tgether, bottles cold in your hands and cicadas filling the silence between you two.
— tetsuya gives advice witthout necessarily telling you what to do, phrases things gently.
— "Some things take time."
— "It's okay not to know."
— people assume you're close.
— you don't correct them, and neither does he.
— he gives you a charm one afternoon, a cute simple one. he hesitates before handing it to you, gives it to you under the pretense that "it's great for internal peace."
— he's not expressive in obvious ways, but he always makes space for you. he adjusts his schedule, wait a little longer before leaving the shrine.
— there's no rush, no tension that needs to be resolved : just a quiet understanding that you're welcome here, with him.
— if summer in nagahama had a place to rest, it would be the shrine. and if it had a person to guide you through it, it would be tetsuya.
kise ryouta — tourism office’s (underworked) part timer !
— kise ryouta works part-time at the town's tourist office.
— ..."works” would be a big word : the office is basically a glorified shackk with brochures nobody takes and a bell that rings one time out of five.
— there are, in fact, no tourists. sometimes a confused couple shows up for a ferry schedule, and ryouta treats them like celebrities.
— you met him because you were lost.
— not badly, just enough to curiously wander into the office. the bell rings, and his head snaps up like he's been waiting for this moment his whole life.
— he's way too excited to see you, immediatly assumes you're a tourist (which isn't wrong in a way). you explains that you're staying with your grandma, he does not let that slow him down.
— he gives you the full tour. maps, recommendations, places you already know about, pointing dramatically like he's hosting a travel show.
— he's bad at his job, but in a charming way ?
— he forgets official infos, makes up fun facts and circles random spots on the map like they're some kind of secret gems.
— you start dropping by on purpose, mostly because he looks so happy every time the bell rings.
— ryouta is talkative, affectionate and is completely unashamed about it.
— compliments come easy to him.
— "That color looks really good on you."
— "Your sunscreen smells so good."
— he asks a million questions : what you like, what you don't, what you've already done, what you want to try next.
— sometimes, he abandons the office completely to show you around. he locks the door, puts up a "be back soon" sign.
— ryouta has zero sense of personal space once he's comfortable with you, which is like immediately.
— he leans close, puts his head on your shoulder to look at something and grabs your hands to pull you somewhere cool he "just remembered."
— when it's slow (which is all the time), you sit together on the floor behind the desk. he tells you stories about the town and its people, you listen.
— ryouta doesn't overthink what you two are.
— he just knows he likes being around you, and he makes it obvious.
— if summer had a mascot, it would be him. sun-warmed skin, easy laughter, and the feeling that something good is always about to happen.
murasakibara atsushi — the giant and “scary” ice cream guy !
— murasakibara atsushi runs the local ice cream stand near the beach. not a cart : an actual stand that's been there forever. faded paint, flavors written in white chalk and a freezer that hums like it's alive.
— everyone calls him the ice cream guy. half the town forgets his name, but he doesn't care as long as he gets his pay.
— he's huge. like, alarmingly so.
— the first time you see him behind the counter, you genuinely wonders how he fits in there.
— you met him because your grandma sent you (like always...). gave you cash, and said "Get something cold."
— extremely ominous. very correct.
— the first interaction is awkward : you stare at the menu too long, he stares at you longer.
— "...You done thinkin' ?"
— rude ? maybe. funny ? yeah.
— you order something basic, which makes him silently judges you. then, he gives you a scoop that could basically counts as a meal in itself.
— it's good. like, stupidly and unfairly good.
— you start coing back. not on purpose, just... coincidence. it's hot. you're nearby. ice cream happens.
— by the third visit, he remembers your order. by the fifth, he doesn't even asks, just scoops and hands it over.
— atsushi lets you stand in the shade by the freezer when it’s too hot.
— he pretends not to notice your lingering.
— he sometimes gives you free ice cream “by accident”. other times, he lets you try the new flavors he’s testing.
— food is how he shows his affection after all.
— conversations with him are slow and spaced out with long silences that surprinsingly aren't awkward. he talks about ice cream flavors like they're serious business, you listen just as seriously.
— you help him close sometimes, wiping the counters, stacking the cons, sitting on the steps while he locks up.
— atsushi isn't loud about liking people : he just adjusts his routine to include them. you realize one day that you're a part of his.
— he never rushes you, never pressures you, never makes things complicated.
— the ice cream melts fast, the days pass slow. and somehow, that's perfect.
midorima shintarō — the weirdly superstitious bug-chasing guy !
— midorima shintarō studies insects, but that’s only half of the story.
— the other half is preparation. charms. omens. probability. he believes that the world gives signals, and that it’s on us to notice them.
— he always knows what kind of day it’ll be before it even began. he checks the weather, the lunar phase, his horoscope and the behavior of insects : all four have to align.
— you met him because he stopped you mid step.
— turns out there’s a beetle crossing the path. also, stepping forward would’ve been bad luck.
— he does not clarify how bad.
— shintarō carries a ridiculous amount of stuff : bug net, notebooks, pens, snacks, water, and at least three different charms.
— he insists that each one has a specific purpose.
— he gives you one the second time you meet, and when he says it’s for “general safety”, you don’t argue because it feels important.
— he refuses to leave his house, without checking his fortune for the day. if it’s bad, he readjusts his schedule (and your meetings). if it’s good, he’s visibly calmer.
— you start walking with him during field work, walks where he warns you about literally everything : uneven ground, unlucky numbers, ill-omened insects…
— when you ask if he really believes all of this, he adjusts his glasses and just says “Preparation is not belief. It’s responsibility.”
— he’s also oddly reassuring ? whenever something goes wrong, he calmly states that he anticipated, before handing you the right charm. problem solved.
— if you forgot your charm, he gets visibly stressed. he insists you take one of his spares.
— being around him feels strangely safe, like someone already thought of every worst-case scenario.
— if luck’s real, shintarō already made sure that it’s on your side.
akashi seijurō — the all-knowing mayor’s son !
— akashi seijurō is the mayor's son, which you learn accidentally.
— no announcement, no grand spectacle. just some random comment from someone at the market.
— "Oh, that's seijurō, the mayor's son."
— suddenly, a lot of things make sense.
— seijurō in a way that feels deliberate. a measured tone, a perfect posture and eyes that never miss anything.
— he speaks sofly, but people still listen anyway.
— you met him at a local event : he already knew who you were. your name, the fact that you're staying with your grandma, taht you've been around since the beginning of summer.
— "I'm glad you're enjoying Nagahama."
— he doesn't flex his status. hell, he doesn't need to.
— doors automatically open for him, conversations shifts when he enters a room.
— when he chooses to focus on you, it feels unsettling at first. then, strangely reassuring.
— seijurō asks thoughtfu questions, not small talk. he wants to know what you think, not only what you do : he also remembers your answers word for word.
— when he's alone, which is rare, he takes you on walk through the quieter parts of town, pointing out things you probably wouldn't have noticed on your town.
— he's not possessive per se, but he is attentive. always aware of where you are in a room, always makes sure that there's space for you besides him.
— people assume you're important to him long before you realize it yourself : people treat you differently and he don't correct then.
— when you disagree with him, he doesn't shut it down. he listens, considers your opinion, and respects it.
— he doesn't rush closeness. he lets it build naturally, like he's playing a long game of shogi.
— spending time with him feels good.
— things are always handled since he's literally thinking three steps ahead.
— he never asks you to choose anything, never pressures you. he simply makes sure that, wherever you are, you're comfortable.
— without ever saying out loud, seijurō makes it clear : you're welcome here.
