pairing: Midorima Shintaro x fem!reader
summary: Midorima, flustered and meticulous, struggles to plan the perfect birthday surprise for his two-month girlfriend, enlisting both his Shutoku teammates and the Generation of Miracles to help him pull off a heartfelt—and hilariously chaotic—celebration at her favorite café.
genre: fluff and comedy :)
School didn't get on the wonders' nerves for once. Takao had dropped by for a surprise visit, although Midorima was almost certain that he had only come to see Mika, his sister who was two years younger. Admittedly, Mika was very pretty and very clever. It must have run in the family.
It was a relatively quiet afternoon, spent playing video games and reading magazines and books for homework. The rainy weather ultimately prevented people from playing on the outdoor court of the apartment blocks.
While leafing through the magazines, Takao had become fascinated by Ohasa's predictions, and that was how it all began.
“Cancer’s lucky item today is… a stuffed turtle?” Takao read aloud, peering over Midorima’s shoulder at the newspaper during a quick snack break, “What’s the point, Shin-chan? You already carry around stranger things than this.”
Midorima snapped the paper shut, ears faintly pink,“That’s not the issue right now.”
“Ohhh? Then what is the issue?,” Takao now highly interested. Midorima hesitated, adjusting his glasses with deliberate slowness. “…It’s Y/n’s birthday soon.”
Takao blinked. Then he grinned,“Wait. Hold up. You mean, you’re actually panicking about what to do? This is gold.”
“I am not panicking,” Midorima hissed, clutching his notebook like a lifeline,“I am… calculating.”
“Sure, sure,” Takao said with a laugh, already jogging to tell the rest of the team.
By the end of this weeks practice, everyone knew. And Midorima officially hated his teammates, especially Takao.
“Man, you’re hopeless,” Miyaji sighed, leaning against the bleachers,“It’s just a birthday. Get her flowers and take her out to dinner. Almost all girls like it.”
“It’s not ‘just’ a birthday,” Midorima muttered, scribbling notes furiously,“It is a statistical milestone. A day to honor to her existence. If not planned correctly, it could—”
“—Could result in you sleeping on the couch forever?” Takao cut in.
“Shut up, Takao,” he snapped pissed.
But despite his tsundere grumbling, Midorima couldn’t hide the way his pencil pressed so hard it nearly broke. He wanted this to be perfect. He was well aware that others found his manner strange. To many, he was the strange oracle type who acted in an almost stoic and calculated manner, with cool composure. It wasn't enough that he was quite handsome and athletic. The "strange" side prevailed. You’d been dating for two months, and somehow, you’d chosen him. The least he could do was make sure you smiled. It was only annoying when the others interfered. But Shutoku didn't care. They thought he needed help if he was going to be as special as he said he would be. Jokingly, the Shutoku Planning Committee was set up.
The team decided on a surprise party at your favorite café. Simple enough. Except Midorima obsessed over everything:
“No, the ribbons should be green. Statistically, it will bring her luck since its his and your favourite color.”
“The cake must be precisely seventeen centimeters in diameter. Any larger and it’ll be inefficient.”
“We cannot use vanilla-scented candles. She ordered a caramel drink last week, which means—”
“Shin-chan,” Takao groaned, “you’re treating this like the Winter Cup finals.”
"No. This is more important,” Midorima muttered under his breath.
Things escalated quickly when Kuroko wandered into the gym and overheard. He had attended Shutoku School because Akashi had called a meeting and he wasn't sure if Midorima was studying too hard to attend again.
“Oh,” Kuroko said, blinking,“Y/n-san’s birthday? I’ll help.”
“Wait, you too?! Wait, wait, why are you here??” Midorima choked.
Within two days, the rest of the GOM had joined. Kise was bouncing off the walls, happily picking out decorations online, Murasakibara agreed on helping only if there was cake, Aomine offered zero useful ideas except “buy her sneakers,” and Akashi somehow took over the guest list without asking.
For Midorima, everything had gone haywire within a few days. Without further ado, his teammates and friends had thrown his picnic idea out the window and suggested a proper party instead. The chaos of planning was too much for him; it would be a disaster.
“Shintarō, you should relax,” Akashi said calmly,“I’ll handle the arrangements.”
“No! This is my responsibility!” Midorima barked, snatching back the plan sheet.
Takao snickered,“You heard him. Birthday Boyfriend Duty.”
By the end, Midorima’s precious “Operation Birthday” notebook looked more like a war manual, complete with diagrams, seating charts, and a backup plan in case you showed up early.
Busy taming the chaos and pushing ahead with the preparations, the days leading up to your birthday flew by and the big day was just around the corner: your birthday. Takao had convinced you to swing by Dear Latte after school. When you entered the little café you had no idea what was coming.
The moment you opened the door, confetti exploded in your face.
“Happy Birthday!” everyone cheered.
You blinked at the sight: soft green and white balloons everywhere, streamers somehow color-coordinated, and your favorite cake front-and-center. Even Kuroko was holding a party popper (though it went off three seconds late).
And standing stiffly in the middle of it all was Midorima, holding a gift bag with both hands like it was a ticking bomb.
Your heart melted,“Shin-kun… you did this?”
Midorima cleared his throat loudly, glasses flashing,“O-of course. It was only logical to commemorate your birth in a… proper way.”
Takao cupped his hands,“Translation: He really, really likes you.”
“TAKAO!” Midorima snapped, his face as red as Kagami’s hair. You laughed, hugging him anyway. He froze, then awkwardly patted your back before giving up and hugging you properly. Kise practically teared up,“Awww, Midorima-cchi is blushing! So cute!”
“Shut up before I leave,” Midorima grumbled, but his hand never left yours.
Later, as everyone dug into cake and argued over who got the biggest slice, you leaned close and whispered,“This is the best birthday I’ve ever had. Thank you, Shin-kun.”
Midorima swallowed hard, ears pink. “…It’s only natural. You… deserve the best.”
“Still,” you teased, “you and the guys worked so hard. I can tell.”
He looked away, muttering,“It wasn’t that much trouble…” but the tiny smile tugging at his lips gave him away.
And for the rest of the night, surrounded by laughter, friends, and cake, Midorima felt something he couldn’t quantify with probability or horoscopes: happiness, plain and simple.
The balloons were losing air, and the cake was half gone — mostly thanks to Murasakibara. You sat in the corner booth with a pile of neatly wrapped gifts, everyone crowded around like kids waiting for Christmas morning. Takao leaned over the stack, grinning, “Alright, birthday girl! Time to see what the real presents are. Better hope Shin-chan didn’t buy you a dictionary.”
“Takao!” Midorima snapped, but his ears were already red.
You giggled, tugging the first package into your lap. It was Takao’s gift: A goofy plush keychain of a lucky charm turtle. “So you can match Shin-chan and his weird horoscope items,” Takao said proudly.
Midorima scowled. “That is not funny.”
Next up was the group gift of the Shutoku boys: A huge pack of high-quality stationery. “So you can write something meaningful,” Miyaji said with a grin, “Unlike certain people who only text ‘study hard.’”
Midorima pushed his glasses up,“…There is nothing wrong with encouraging her to study.”
Then followed the Generation of Miracles’ Gifts. You grabbed a plae blue present first: Kuroko’s gift. Once you had disposed of the packaging paper, a small framed photo of Nigou dressed in a party hat appeared.
“Its from the day you and I met,” he explained softly. Everyone collectively melted. Even Midorima looked away, muttering something about “sentimentality.”
The present with the little sunflowers was from Kise. It was cute designer scarf, “It’ll look perfect on you, Y/n-cchi!”
Midorima immediately adjusted his glasses and glared,“That’s too flashy. She’ll catch a cold if it isn’t warm enough.”
“Shin-chan, it’s cashmere!” Kise whined.
Aomine’s gift, was predictable to say the least. Everyone got presentet the same thing, since he started to attend such socail gatherings: Sneakers.
“Practical. You can run in them,” Aomine stated proudly.
“Run from what?” you asked.
“From Shin-chan when he nags you too much,” Aomine deadpanned.
“OI!” Midorima barked.
What followed was Murasakibara’s gift. You were surprised that he had even bothered to get a gift. A massive box of assorted sweets.
“I wanted it for myself… but happy birthday, okay?” he mumbled.
You smiled and thanked him, and he immediately reached for the box again,“But, like, can we share?”
Akashi’s gift on the other hand, was a handcrafted fountain pen in a velvet case, that must have cost a fortune.
“For writing your future,” he said smoothly. Everyone stared.
“Do you… do you just have things like that lying around?” Takao whispered.
And finally, the girft from your boyfriend. You could sense how the boys could hardly wait to see what he had chosen after all the high notes. After all, it had to be perfect as he said. They had already been wondering on the way to the café, what he might have chosen.
The room went quiet when you reached the last box. It was neat, precise, wrapped in plain green paper with not a single crease out of place. You opened it carefully — and pulled out… a high-end portable blanket with heating settings, plus a small packet of herbal tea bags.
There was a pause. Then Takao exploded,“PFFFT! A blanket?! Shin-chan, what are you, eighty?!”
Miyaji laughed so hard he had to hold his stomach,“That’s the most Midorima gift ever.”
Kise blinked, “Wait, but… that’s actually kinda genius?”
Midorima’s ears burned. He adjusted his glasses so aggressively it almost squeaked,“It is not strange. Y/n is always sitting in that café by the window, even when it’s drafty. And she stays up late studying, which causes strain. This gift is both practical and considerate.”
The group stared. Takao grinned. “Translation: Shin-chan notices everything about you.”
“TAKAO!” Midorima barked, turning crimson.
You, meanwhile, hugged the blanket to your chest, smiling brightly,“It’s perfect. Thank you, Shin-kun. It’s thoughtful and really sweet.”
Midorima froze. His mouth opened, closed, then opened again before he finally muttered,“…Of course. I only chose what was logical.”
But when you leaned over and kissed his cheek in front of everyone, his face went so red he practically short-circuited.
“Shin-chan.exe has stopped working,” Takao whispered dramatically, earning himself a flick to the forehead from Miyaji.
The whole table burst out laughing, but Midorima didn’t even care. He just held your hand under the table, muttering to himself about probabilities — though the tiny, smug smile tugging at his lips gave him away.
