later, varka trains diluc, diluc becomes a captain, etc etc. (all while varka is still festering feelings for diluc’s dad btw…)

near his 18th birthday, varka has a talk with diluc because he intends to name him acting grandmaster whilst he’s on a very important mission in Nod Krai, and varka finds out through him that, “my mom and my dad are not together, i’ve never met her, but she’ll send me gifts every now and then from far up north.”

cue awkward silence and varka spiraling because he is about to go on another expedition, and he must confess to crepus before then. but before he can do anything about it, crepus fights ursa the drake, and well…

They are both sitting with their backs to the tree at Windrise, watching the sun hide in the horizon.

Varka laughs, “Diluc?” He shakes his head incredulously, “If anything, I’d hope they’d be a little like Jean or Mika, would save me some worrying, y’know.” He pauses, “Why Diluc?”

Nicole shrugs, “Because he’s my son.”

Varka stands up, very suddenly and shamefully, his eyes wide open. He says many things, whispers most, but out of all of them the loudest is; “You had a kid with my ex?”

like you can interpret these characters however you want but these assumptions are inherently wrong. cmon, you think varka got to his position w just brawn? you think NICOLE, witness to humanity from almost its very beginning, who LOVES to read, is innocent and doesn’t know about sex, or human love, or human interactions?
