HEY FRIENDS, I am EXTREMELY EXCITED to have come into possession of a copy of the play script for The Secret of Sherlock Holmes and so NATURALLY the first thing I had to do was transcribe it to share! It’s agonizingly difficult to find, which is a massive shame because it’s REALLY excellent, especially if you’re already a fan of Granada Holmes.

In case you’re unfamiliar, this play was commissioned by Jeremy Brett to Jeremy Paul, who wrote several episodes of the Granada series. The stage play starred Brett and Edward Hardwicke and ran from August 1988 to December 1989. It’s basically a series of vignettes chronicling the friendship of Holmes and Watson, with a bit of a dark twist, the titular Secret.

Since ancient days, Shinto traditions view horses as the “steed of gods”. People would send horses to shrines as offerings to the gods (shinme/jinme 神馬)  so that their prayers would be answered.

For example, there were records that say white horses are to be offered to ask for sunshine, and black horses to be offered to ask for rain.

Horses are expensive, though, and people sometimes donate figures of horses instead of real horses. Statues, paintings, and so on. In the Sengoku era, there are even special halls erected to display these “horse figures” because artisans had been hired to create them. 

Eventually these “figures” evolve into the wishing plaques that we know today, and it’s available not just in Shinto shrines, but also Buddhist temples.
