I felt it before I even saw him.
That shift in the air—the kind that made your instincts go on high alert. Like the moment before a predator struck.
Sylus Sinclair, draped lazily in a chair across from me like he’d been here for hours, waiting. His red eyes gleamed under the dim library lights, dark and unreadable, his smirk sharp enough to cut.
“Kitten.” His voice was smooth, velvety, full of amusement. “Took you long enough.”
I froze mid-step, your entire body tensing. The audacity of this man.
My hands clenched around my laptop as I dropped into my chair, glaring daggers at him.
“No. Absolutely not. I refuse to work with you.”
His smirk widened, slow and deliberate, like he was enjoying every second of this.
“Funny. I don’t remember asking.”
I hated the way he looked so at ease, I hated the way he spoke—like every word was a challenge, a game he already knew he’d win. Most of all, I hated that no matter how much I despised him, I could never ignore him.
I exhaled sharply. “Let’s just get this over with. We don’t have to talk more than necessary.”
Sylus tilted his head, studying me with something too knowing in his gaze. “Oh, sweetheart. You really think you can just ignore me?”
I shot him a glare. “Watch me.”
A low chuckle rumbled from his chest—one that sent an annoying little spark down my spine. He leaned forward, elbows resting on the table, his voice dropping into something dangerous.
“Go on then,” he murmured. “Ignore me.”
Because the way he was looking at me? It wasn’t casual. It wasn’t annoying. It was intentional—like he was stripping me down layer by layer, digging under my skin just to see how I’d react. And worse? He knew exactly what he was doing.
I forced myself to scoff, flipping open my notebook with unnecessary force. “I am not playing this game with you.”
Sylus just hummed, slow and thoughtful. Then, with infuriating ease, he leaned back, stretching his arms above his head. His shirt lifted just enough to expose the toned skin of a hidden six pack, and I hated myself for noticing.
“You sure?” he mused. “Because I think you love our banter.”
I nearly snapped my pen in half. “I will shove this entire laptop down your throat.”
His grin was pure, wicked amusement. “Kinky. Didn’t know you were into that, Kitten.”
Heat flared up your neck, and Sylus was watching—of course he was. He always watched. Always noticed. And he was thriving off of my reaction.
I shot to my feet, grabbing my bag. “I need coffee before I commit an actual crime.”
Sylus just propped his chin on his hand, red eyes gleaming with something dark, something dangerous. As a smirk played upon his lips.
