"See, Syd? This is exactly why you shouldn't have gone into veterinary work and stayed my partner. They threw me to the wolves," he teased. As much as he would have loved to still have her as his partner, he couldn't help but be proud as he watched her bravely transition careers over the years. "Because she's got no shame and even less of a filter." Was it jealousy he was hearing in her tone and behind her questions? Will knew Sydney through and through as she did him, which made it almost impossible for either of them to mask emotions. "She's very happily married...started last week. She's kind of motherly, actually. I might've told her about you and she ragged on me for not making a move."
"Maybe you should have followed me into veterinary work," Sydney challenged, brow raised. It had taken her some time to figure out what she had wanted to be but she did miss being partners with Will. Not just because of her feelings and that she got to work with him daily. She just liked being around him. "What would you have done if I had spoken about those things with you?" Brow remained raised but Sydney would admit the question was a little unfair. She was absolutely being jealous and even though she had no right, she couldn't help it. The fact that he now had a female partner just made her uncomfortable, which again, was not fair. Maybe it was because things were unclear between them. The fact that Will had spoken to his new partner about her and she ragged on him for not making a move did make her smile. And Sydney maybe disliked her a little less now. "Did you tell her that she'll never live up to my level of greatness as a partner? What was your response to not making a move?"

Impulse buying an entire business instead of, say, a pair of shoes or a weird gift shop keychain was very much like 'building the car while you were driving it' but Beau was having a good time. It had been good to him, having to learn something new, mostly because it took his mind off his ever-present writer's block and lack of inspiration. Even as he was surrounded by the very thing he was struggling to create, the man allowed himself to be in awe of the many, many scores of words all around him, and of the all-important job of preserving them.
The tinkling of the door bell alerted him to a guest entering the store, his first all day, and his cerulean gaze traveled in the direction of the sound, almost immediately launching into the most recent tidbit that had come to mind. "Did you know that you don't actually need gloves to handle, like, older books? I always thought you did, but the Library of Congress says it isn't necessary, and I feel like they'd definitely be experts, you know?"
As was typical, it had taken Beau's brain a few seconds to catch up with his mouth, and it was then that he actually entertained the idea that whoever had taken the time to come into the store this early, likely wasn't here for a random fast fact — but they were a person on a mission. "Sorry for rambling, that is a thing I do sometimes. What brings you in?"
Even though Sydney was lowest on the totem pole at Halo Animal Hospital she was still a veterinarian and was able to set her own schedule for the days that she would be in and the hours she'd take appointments. From the start she had determined to keep a five-day week work schedule, deciding that she would work Sunday through Thursday so that the hospital would not only have a doctor on staff on Sunday but something that would be easier for her client base as well as it built. Most couldn't do routine appointments during the week, unless those visits were some level of emergency, so Sydney did her best to be thoughtful and accommodating. It was also kind of nice to have Fridays and Saturdays off.
With today being one of those days off she was out running some errands but made a much needed stop at Cobblestones. It had been a while since she'd collected any books to read, or as her reading slump had left her — to shelve, and she also wanted to pick up something for her grandmother. Reading was good for the mind and they were doing everything possible to keep it as strong as possible. Walking into the store, a favorite of hers in the city, Sydney smiled at first when she was greeted. Soon her face dropped expression and she stood there blankly, lost in some thought about what he had posed to her. "Really? I'm not sure about that. I'm definitely no expert but I thought the gloved were to keep the oils from our hands from breaking down the pages and ink. I mean, they keep and store books and literature in temperature controlled rooms," Sydney offered, thoroughly interested in where this conversation could lead.
When she stepped further into the store, she approached the male and shook her head. "No, that's ok, that's quite a conversation starter. I love it." At his question, though, Sydney's eyes looked around and then landed back on him. "I'm honestly not sure. I've been in a reading slump lately so I'm hoping to find something that will pull me out of it. Any recommendations? My grandmother is also a fan of the classics and historical fiction, and I'm looking for her as well."
status: closed for @sydneyzello location: at sanem's place
"I can't believe you've been so busy that this is the first time in forever that we're getting together." Sanem called out from the kitchen as she finished putting the final touches on the charcuterie board she'd put together for this fun little night for her and Sydney. Of course her words were a bit of an exaggeration seeing as Sanem only just returned to Vancouver and so there hadn't really been that many moments for them to get together in the past month, especially with it being the holiday season. "But no matter--now that I'm back, I'm demanding these sessions become a weekly thing." She proclaimed as she brought the board into the living room and placed it on the coffee table before holding out the wine glass for Sydney. "Now--tell me everything, what is new in your life?"
"Hey, I may be busier now, but at least I can buy us more expensive wine. We all know expensive wine hangovers are much better than cheap wine hangovers." A laugh escaped her and Sydney glanced toward the kitchen where Sanem was far too busy. They'd been besties since she could remember and had been ecstatic the moment she'd heard that her dearest had moved back to Vancouver. "Not only have we had a doctor out sick but another was on vacation. Then," the word was heavily stressed, "so many staff out with colds or the flu and some on their vacations since not everyone could have the holidays off..." Sydney waved her hand, wanting to steer away from speaking about work. She was a new vet at Halo, lowest on the totem pole when came to the other veterinarians so she had to take the bulk of the work while they eased into the new year. "Yes, speaking of," she turned on the couch and sent a sharp look toward the kitchen, "you haven't even been here." Then she laughed and nodded her head. "Weekly is good with me but don't complain if I end up crashing on your couch." Graciously she took the offered wine and had a sip, really soaking up the flavors. "Well, I kissed Will..."
Where: Anywhere! Who: Open (capping at four replies) "So my partner at work hasn't stopped talking about how her and her husband have taken up tantric yoga." A half smirk stretched across his features, despite the awkward conversations he had been involved in all week. " During last night's shift she brought up tantric sex. Do we think this is funny or do I need to put in a request to switch partners?"
@vancitystarters
"Your partner what...?" Sydney's brow raised and a flare of jealousy heated her. "If she's married why is she talking to you about tantric sex?" If it had been anybody but Will she might have laughed it off and understood that as paramedics they were with each other for long hours and had a unique closeness to it, but it was Will. "How long has she been your partner?" Was she attractive? Did he think she was funny and cool? A million things played under a hopefully placid surface.
