You ask the dead what you want to know, and the dead tell you. They tell you that the trail isn’t for just any men but the shuffling ghosts of men. You hold the rifle like you’re clutching a bag of groceries to your chest, a loaf of white bread sticking out the top. Your dog is dead and stands beside you. You can’t decide whether your ordeal is over or has yet to begin. The man with a suffering face passes a baby through the tangles of barbwire at the thinly patrolled border. Despite rain slamming down, the crow remains conscientiously crow, silent and motionless on a bare black bough as though lost in good thoughts.
